Report

Introduction:
This purpose of this simple machine project is to measure how many different types of
speed and energy will be demonstrated in the process of the machine . This report will
explain how and what was used in my Rube Goldberg and will create a greater
understanding about how physic concepts are demonstrated in the simple machine. The
designed process and product will also be included.
Process:
The process of making this was drawing down many plans for it to work, and planning what
the simple machines will be made out for it to work. The design included arrows which
explained where the ball was moving and included the physics basic. The designing and
what product will be used for it to work took a while and had to get my parents to help with
it. After all the simple machine was planned and what was needed to build it, the rest of the
machine was planned out. The sketching of my whole plan was drawn onto the board and
started constructing everything. Every piece of my machines were made and hot glued onto
the board. My lever needed to have a hole in the middle having a screw through it to make
the lever work. The board was also drilled and after was attached with the lever. The pieces
of carboard was hot glued onto the board and then the other machines were placed onto it.
The length had to perfect for the pulley otherwise the ball will not fall into the cup. After
many trial and errors, adjustments were made and it took many trials for everything to work
perfectly.
Simple Machine:
The simple machine that was used in my Rube Goldberg was a pulley, lever, wheel and axle
and inclined plane. The other two that I didnt use in my project were the wedge and the
screw. A pulley is a string on a cord and when a forced is acted upon one side and it pulls
down so then the other side does something, for my machine I used a cup on one side and a
piece of paper on the other blocking the ball from falling. A lever is something similar to a
pulley when one side has more weight the other side lifts up and activates another simple
machine. A screw is something going around for an example having a metal wire spirally
around a circle object going around it. A wedge is two blocks having some room apart but
something gets stuck in the middle of it. A inclined plane is like a triangle, it has an angle
going down horizontally. The inclined plane was demonstrated in my machine twice for the
first bit of the machine and near the end when the ball rolls off. I used a lever after the
wheel and axle (which is the car) rolled off onto the first lever which then hit another lever.
Physics concept choices were:
o Wave (sound or mechanical)
o Collision
o Chemical reaction
o Temperature change
o Magnetism
o Electricity
o Change of motion (acceleration)
o Light
Out the choices I chose the collision, this was demonstrated when the ball hit the dominos.
A collision is an instance movement of one object hitting another object. Change of motion
is when a object moves from one spot to another and it was shown on the inclined plane at
the start of the Rube Goldberg.
Physics basic
The physics basic is the basic knowledge of physics like formulas. These are the examples of
physics basic: Potential energy - The energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position
relative to others, stresses within itself, electric charge, and other factors. The mathematical
formula for this is: PE grav = mass *gravity * height. It is measured in Joules (J). Portential
energy is demonstrated is my machine when there is an inclined plane and the car rolls
down. Kinetic energy: There are 3 types of kinetic energy: rotational, vibrational and
translational it is motion from one location to another. Measured in: Joule (1 Joule = 1 kg m
2/52 ) equation: KE = 0.5*mass*b2. An example of kinetic energy is the pulley. Inertia - It is
an object which tends to stay at the same spot or something that stays in motion. Formula =
I = mr2. Measurement = kg. The candle is the inertia demonstrated in the Rube Goldberg.
Momentum - the quantity of motion that an object has. Formula = momentum = mass
velocity. Measurement: kg m/s. Momentum is also used for the first inclined plane. Speed -
The total distance rated which travels in a certain amount of time. Formula = speed =
distance / time. Measured = km/h. Speed is demonstrated all throughout the machine for
every step. All the physics basic had to be demonstrated in the machine so every single one
was used.
Conclusion:
The machine helped gain greater understanding the way physics work by knowing the
formulas to each of the thing and know what they each mean. Using simple machines was
another way to blow out a candle. The process of the making for the simple machine took a
while though was worth the wait, researching was also part of the process looking for ideas
and looking up meanings of physics. Overall Rube Goldberg helped more understanding for
physics in a fun way.
