audio Both parties cannot hear each other.

Cross
talk The calling party hears the voice of a third
party, instead of the called party.

Echo
The calling or called party can hear his or
her own voice through the earphone.

There are two standards for evaluating the voice quality:

1. Subjective: MOS, defined in ITU-TP.800
2. Objective: PESQ, defined in P.862

It is commonly accepted that the

voice quality is evaluated by the
listeners involved in the call. The MOS
MOS
value is generated by averaging the
results of a set of standard and PESQ
subjective tests where a number of
listeners rate the heard audio quality.

PESQ is the latest standard for

objective end-to-end network
quality and voice quality testing. It
models subjective tests commonly
used in telecommunications to
assess the voice quality by human
beings.
Many systems would respond in an
unpredictable way to non-speech
signals.
