WHO can blame them for leaving, with monthly salaries of between RM12,000 and RM15,000
being offered.

Malaysia is losing thousands of experienced nurses a year, especially to Saudi Arabia where

salaries are at least six times higher than what they earn here.

Health Ministry statistics show that an average of 1,700 registered nurses leave the country

each year, with the majority of them seeking employment in the Middle East.

A retired nursing tutor, who did not want to be named, said the only way to arrest the

exodus of Malaysian nurses is to increase salaries so that they are at least on par with those
of other professions.

³Even if they have degrees, nurses in the public sector are still being paid the salaries of a

diploma holder. The salary scale is not even on par with the teaching profession.´

And because of poor promotional prospects, many public sector nurses leave for the private

sector.

³Some of them work for a lifetime and still do not rise up the career ladder, unlike the private
sector where promotions are based on merit.´

She also urged the government to consider increasing the retirement age of nurses from 55

years to at least 60 to conform with the practice in most Asian countries.

³It¶s ironic that we are retiring our experienced nurses at such an early age and recruiting
foreign nurses to fill the shortage,´ said the tutor.

The tutor said another problem was the tendency for government hospitals to put the higher

qualified nursing staff in administrative positions instead of clinical work.

³What¶s the point of enhancing your professional qualification if you cannot put it to practice

and effect the changes that are required at the clinical level?
