Background
This internship opportunity came about as I have volunteered at Newport Hospitals
Rehabilitation Center which is right next to one of South Countys Orthopedics sites.
When I was there I was able to network with people until I finally met my supervisor
and some of his mid-level workers. I chose to contact them later in effort to shadow
and help out for this internship as I would like to become a Physician Assistant. Since
I am currently in kinesiology, orthopedics seemed like one of the more related and
interesting focuses for a PA.

Professional Objectives
Objective 1: To learn about the information being collected during an initial and follow
up appointment and being capable of obtaining all the necessary parts to a patients
situation.
Activities/Resources: Observe coworkers, research
Evidence: Include a description what kind of process the orthopedic practice for each
patient from start to finish.

Objective 2: To become more knowledgeable about what a physician assistant does and
explain what I am able to assist with.

Evidence: Include a description of the tasks the medical professional has and how I can
assist.

Objective 3: To learn about the diagnostic options for patients and how they carried out

Evidence: Include a description about the several diagnostic options and they are
conducted.

Objective 4: To acquire an understanding about the noninvasive treatment modalities and


how they are performed.

Evidence: Include a description of the treatment methods and when a patient would be
applicable for them.

Objective 5: To acquire an understanding about the invasive treatment modalities and


how they are performed.
Activities/Resources: Observe coworkers and research

Duties
- Observe and assist with patient contact
- Ask questions to patients in effort to collect related information
- File paperwork
- Draw-up injections
- Remove sutures and surgical tape
- Place on braces and splints
- Review medical reports and imaging with supervisor
- Set up for ultrasound guided injections
- Observe how to create physical therapy, medication, and medical imaging orders

Evaluation Methods
- Daily communication with coworkers (MD, PA, NP, & MA)
- Complete daily tasks on schedule and reviewed by coworkers
- Submit URIs mid and final evaluation forms completed by supervisor

Expected Workdays
- Monday-Friday 8am 430pm
- Start Date: May 21, 2017 End Date: July 29, 2017
