A comprehensive 7 year program that aligns with the Common Core State Standards
Jolly Phonics is a comprehensive program, based on the proven, fun and multi-sensory synthetic
phonics method that gets children reading and writing from an early age. Jolly Phonics provides seven
years of teaching starting with phonics in PreK and going all the way through to Grade 6. It enables

Program progression example

The sample pages show how the <ai> for /ai/ is taught through
the program. These pages are from The Phonics and Grammar
Handbooks. The same content can also be found in the phonic
and grammar student/teacher books, which can be used as an
alternative to the handbooks.

Phonics year
Children learn the /ai/ sound and practice blending
and segmenting <ai> words: for example, rain,
sail, snail. Once the 42 letters sounds are secure,
the alternatives can be introduced for reading.
With regular blending practice, the children become
familiar with the alternatives, making it easier for
them to choose the correct spellings later on.

Grammar 1
Teaches the main alternatives of /ai/ for spelling:
<a_e> and <ay>. Children are taught one spelling
per lesson. Each lesson has a spelling list of 10
words, including 4 /ai/ words.

Grammar 2 Grammar 1
Revises the main ways to write /ai/: <ai>, a_e> and

<ay>. Children have to choose the right alternative
to spell words correctly. Children learn that /ai/ can
also be written as <ei> and <eigh>. Both lessons
have a spelling list of 10 words, including 6 /ai/
words.
Grammar 3
Revises the main ways to write /ai/: <ai>, a_e> and
<ay>. Children learn that /ai/ can also be written as
the vowel <a>. Both lessons have a spelling list of
18 words, including 6 /ai/ words.

Grammar 4
Children learn that the vowel sounds in unstressed
syllables are often swallowed and become neutral Grammar 3
(the schwa). This includes the /ai/ sound in words Grammar 4
like private and abominable.

Grammar 5
Children learn that a swallowed vowel sound does
not always become a neutral schwa, but sometimes
says /i/ instead. For example, the spelling patterns
<age> at the end of the words is usually unstressed
and say /ij/ rather than /aij/ or /uhj/, as in village,
cottage and sausage.

Grammar 6
Revises the <ei> and <eigh> spellings for /ai/, using
longer words and more sophisticated vocabulary:
for example, freight and surveillance. Children

The online course is divided into 5 modules: The online course is divided into 5 modules:

Module 1 - covers the history of literacy teaching and Module 1 - covers the history of grammar and evaluates the

Module 2 - introduces Jolly Phonics and explains the five
basic skills that are taught in the program.

Module 3 - looks at Grammar and writing skills and how these
are developed in the program. Topics include dictionary and
thesaurus skills, antonyms, synonyms, homophones, root
words, prefixes, suffixes, syllables, writing structure and literary
devices.

Module 5 - looks at research studies, which have examined Module 4 - investigates spelling covering strategies that can
