Proposed through girder is double Warren type truss equally divided into 10 number of panels each of 4.75m
length. The total length of truss between centre to centre of bearings will be 4.75 x 10 = 47.5m. The depth of
truss is provided as 11m between centre to centre of top chord and botom chord. Typical arrangement and
cross section of the truss is as shown below.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
Stringer and Cross beams are analyzed and design separately as simply supported beams. Through truss
girder is modelled in STAAD only for Analysis. Relevant member properties of stringer, cross beams, top
chord, bottom chord, diagonals, verticals and bracings are finalized and assigned in STAAD model. The
analysis results are extracted from STAAD and the design calculations are presented in design note. Self
weight of the truss is applied using self weight command in STAAD. To account for weight of gusset plate
and connections at joints, the density of steel in STAAD is increased by 25%. Loads are calculated and
applied as uniformly distributed load in STAAD model at relevant members in STAAD model. Each member
is classified under certain group whose sections are same and hence the calculations for individual groups
are shown. From STAAD analysis, results for different load cases are obtained and from these forces
Maximum force envelope is obtained for individual groups. These values of forces are summarized
individually. These individual forces are combined together according to the load combinations as per IRS
Steel Bridge code. Further these load combination values are used for design of member. The members are
checked for their capacity and fatigue strength. Design of connections is also provided in this design note.,
HSFG bolts shall be used for connections.

Dead Load (DL) consists of Self weight of members and deck slab self weight. In STAAD model SELFWEIGHT
command is used which accounts for the selfweight of the steel members, whereas self weight of deck slab is
applied in the form of floor load. To account for weights of connections to the steel members, the density of steel is
increased by 25%. To account for weight of concrete in haunches, average thickness of deck slab is considered.
SIDL Calculation
Super Imposed dead load (SIDL) consists of selfweight of rails, sleepers, ballast, wearing coat, ballast retainer
and footpath slab. In STAAD analysis Crash barrier load is applied in the form of uniform load, whereas self weight
of wearing coat is also applied in the form of uniform load.
FORCES ON PARAPET
As per Cl. 2.10 of IRS Bridge rule horizontal & vertical force on parapet to be taken as 1.47 kN/m
Above load on parapet is applied at uniformly distributed load in STAAD model.
Above load is not applied in STAAD model, instead it is added to the forces which are extracted from STAAD
for design of bottom chord.

LIVE LOAD
Live load for DFC loading of 32.5t axle loads is considered as per Appendix -XXVI of IRS bridge rules. Live Load
EUDL is applied on STAAD model as uniformly distributed load over the rail track members.
CDA is considered as per Appendix XXVI of IRS Bridge rules for the considered EUDL.

WIND LOAD
Transverse wind force are applied over the exposed surfaces of the relevent areas on STAAD model. Since the
superstructure is Semi through Truss Bridge. Depending on solidity ratio drag coefficient is calculated for the windward
truss and an additional factor called shielding factor is applied to the leeward truss depending on the truss spacing ratio.
Wind forces on superstructure are calculated as per Cl 2.11 of IRS Bridge Rules with reference to IS
875(Part 3). The calculations are presented as under.
As per clause 2.11.2 of IRS Bridge rules, Structure shall not be considered to be carrying any live load if the wind
pressure at deck level exceeds 1.47kN/m2.
Span is to be considered as Unloaded with train live load since the wind pressure at deck level 1.52kN/m^2 is >
1.47kN/m^2
TRANSVERSE DIRECTION
Net Exposed Area for wind calculation
As per clause 2.11.3.1, exposed area shall be as given below : `
a) For Unloaded spans and trestles
For unloaded spans and trestles net exposed area shall be considered as follows
Exposed area (except Plate girders) = 1.5 times the horizontal projected area of the span or the trestle
Force coefficients for single frames and sheilding factor for muliple frames as per IS:875 part III

r2 = Force resultant due to full design seismic force along Z-direction.
As per above clause, when considering full design force along a particular direction, 30% of the design force

The forces for basic load cases are extracted from STAAD analysis result and summarised for
each member. Load combinations are made using these basic load cases. Members are grouped
together and each group has same member properties. Member properties are summarised for
each group. Permissible stress is found out using Table IV & Table II of IRS steel bridge code.
Each member is checked against its capacity and summarised in tables. Later connection design is
carried out for each joint locations.

TYPE OF STRESS UNDER NORMAL LOADS IN TRUSS
Members of the both the truss are kept same for uniformity. i.e corresponding members in both truss will
have same member properties.
Since derailment load in service condition is very less it is not considered in further design

As per Appendix XXVII of IRS Bridge rules Longitudinal loads (tractive/ braking) are considered.
For Span = 47.50 m Longitudinal Load = 1234.8 kN
Longitudinal Loads(tractive / bracking) are considered to be equally shared by bottom chords of both the trusses.
Thus longitudinal force in bottom chord of each truss FL = 1234.8 = -617 kN

Top lateral bracings in adddition is designed for transverse shear of 2.5% of compression forces as per
clause 6.17.2 of IRS- Steel Bridge code. Hence a separate STAAD model is prepared of top
bracings only and a lateral load due to 2.5% of maximum compression force of top chord is applied.

Each built up members are connected together by using lacing and end tie plates. The members are
connected to each other using gusset plate.
1) Lacing bars shall be inclined at an angle of 50-70 degree to the axis of the member for single
intersection system and 40-50 degrees for double intersection system.
2) Maximum spacing of lacing bars shall be such that max slenderness ratio l/r of the components of the
compression member between consecutive connections of the lacing bars to one component is not
greater than 50 or 0.7 times the maximum slenderness ratio of the member as a whole whichever is
lesser, where l is the distance between centres of the connections of lacing bar to one component
3) Slenderness ratio of lacing bar shall not be greater than 170 for tension member and 140 for for
compression member, the effective length shall be the distance between inner ends of welds
4) Laced compression member shall be provided with tie plates at the ends of lacing system, or at points
where lacing is interrupted.
As per Cl. 6.5.8, 6.5.9. 6.9.8 & 6.9.9 of IRS Steeel Bridge Code

The length of end tie plates measured between end fastenings along the longitudinal axis of member shall
not be less than perpendicular distance between lines of rivets connecting them to flanges or the vertical side
plates of the main chords whichever is greater and shall be atleast equal to
depth of cross girders where they are directly attached to struts and the length of intermediate tie plates shall
not be less than 3/4 of the distance between lines of rivets.
