F. Feb. 24: First due date for papers, with chance to revise*
W. Mar. 1 & Th. Mar. 2: Hour exam (in section)covers novels through Great
Expectations
W. Apr. 26: Tess of the d'Urbervilles (and a brief look forward and back)
*Papers: In addition to the two exams, you will be required to write two papers of
approximately 1500-2000 words (5-7 pp.) each. You may turn in your papers in the drop-box
outside LC 109 by 3:00 p.m. on any two of the three due dates listed above, subject to the
following restrictions: 1) Only students who submit papers on the first due date will be
permitted to revise and resubmit, if they wish. (Revised papers may be submitted any time until
the final due date.) 2) All students must write at least one paper on either Great Expectations
or Middlemarch. You may of course write a paper on each if you choose, though in that case

you will probably not be able to submit one by the first due date. Topics for papers will be
distributed later in the semester.
