Lesson Idea Name: Name that compound

Content Area: Chemistry
Grade Level(s): 11-12

Content Standard Addressed: SC2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the chemical and
physical properties of matter resulting from the ability of atoms to form bonds.

e.Ask questions about chemical names to identify patterns in IUPAC nomenclature in order to predict
chemical names for ionic (binary and ternary), acidic, and inorganic covalent
compounds.
f.Develop and use bonding models to predict chemical formulas including ionic (binary and ternary), acidic,
and inorganic covalent compounds.

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor

Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative
artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
3a. Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their
intellectual or creative pursuits.
3b. Students evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility and relevance of information, media, data or
other resources.
3c. Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create
collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
3d. Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and
theories and pursuing answers and solutions.

Lesson idea implementation: `I will present the topic of naming covalent bonds the night before the topic is
introduced in the classroom. This video will act as a flipped classroom assignment. Students will listen to the
narrated PowerPoint and take notes on the information presented. The next day the students will be given a
group worksheet assignment to work on naming the covalent bonds. Whichever groups gets all the formula
names correct and the fastest will receive a prize. Some of the problems will be directly from the video shown
in the flipped classroom assignment.
After the group competition students will play a covalent bond dice activity. Students will receive two dice,
each side of the dice will have different element symbol. Students will role the two dice, each di will land on a
element, the student will be responsible for indentifying if the in the bond is ionic or covalent and then name
the compound. The students should have at least 20 different combinations. Students will record the
information on the activity sheet . For homework students will be place in groups of 4 and will be responsible

for making a narrative PowerPoint. I will have five different topics, each group will be assigned one topic to
explain in their narrative PowerPoint. The topics will be as followed: Explaining the difference between ionic
and covalent bonding, Rules for naming ionic compounds, Rules for naming covalent compound, how to
convert Name to formula in Ionic bonding, and Three real-world examples of each covalent and ionic bonds.
Each group will have the weekend to create the narrative PowerPoint and they will present their presentation
Monday morning.
