Preparation for Checking / Testing

1. Connect the HMS 990 scope to the electrical wake-up connector block (X30/8),
located under the left front door sill cover.
2. Ensure that the bridging piece of connector X30/8 is not removed at this time.
3. Ensure the vehicle is prepared correctly:
All doors open
Trunk open
Navigation module exposed
Ignition OFF & key removed
CAN B asleep
MOST ring asleep

4. How can you tell if the MOST ring is asleep?

Note: If the MOST ring will not go to sleep, contact your instructor.

Electrical Wake-Up - MOST

1. We will now observe what happens at the head unit, navigation module and
MOST wake-up line (with HMS 990 scope) when we switch on the head unit.
Ensure that HMS 990 is recording and that a member of the group is observing
the navigation module.
2. Reach into the vehicle and power up the head unit by pressing the Power button
on COMAND.

4. What happened at the navigation module?
_______________________________________________________________
5. How many electrical wake-up pull downs were observed on HMS 990? _______
6. Who initiated the electrical wake-up? __________________________________
7. Reach into the vehicle and turn off the MOST system.

CAN B Wake-up MOST

1. Ensure the vehicle is prepared correctly:

All doors open
Trunk open
Navigation module exposed
Ignition OFF & key removed
CAN B asleep
MOST ring asleep

Note: If the MOST ring will not go to sleep, contact your instructor.

2. We will now observe what happens at the head unit, navigation module and
MOST wake-up line (with HMS 990 scope) when CAN B wakes-up.
Ensure that HMS 990 is recording and that a member of the group is observing
the navigation module.
3. Close a door to wake-up CAN B and within a few seconds power up the head
unit by pressing the Power button on COMAND.

Wake-Up Line Shorted to Ground

1. Ensure the vehicle is prepared correctly:

All doors open
Trunk open
Navigation module exposed
Ignition OFF & key removed
CAN B asleep
MOST ring asleep

Note: If the MOST ring will not go to sleep, contact your instructor.

2. Lets see how the MOST system reacts when the wake-up line is shorted to
ground. On the left side of the trunk, you will find a wire with a crocodile clip on
that has been connected to one of the wake-up lines. Clip the crocodile clip onto
a good vehicle ground.
3. Reach into the vehicle and power up the head unit by pressing the Power button
on COMAND.

4. What happened at / on the head unit?
i) __________________________________________________________
ii) __________________________________________________________
iii) __________________________________________________________
5. What happened at the navigation module?
_______________________________________________________________
6. With the electrical wake-up line shorted to ground, the voltage on the wake-up
line will be ____________volts.
7. Was there any activity on the HMS 990 scope? YES NO
8. Why didnt the system wake-up optically?
________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________

9. Lets see what happens when we wake CAN B.

10. Ensure the vehicle is prepared correctly:
All doors open
Trunk open
Navigation module exposed
Ignition OFF & key removed
CAN B asleep
MOST ring asleep

Note: If the MOST ring will not go to sleep, contact your instructor.

11. Close a door to wake-up CAN B and within a few seconds power up the head
unit by pressing the Power button on COMAND.
12. What happened to the MOST system?
________________________________________________________________
13. Explain why the system reacted different when CAN B was active?

14. What happens to the MOST system when CAN B goes back to sleep?

Diagnosis

1. With the wake-up line still shorted to ground, connect SDS / DAS to the vehicle
and access Audio Gateway (AGW)
2. Select Actuations and select Check of wake-up line to the MOST components.
3. Perform the test by pressing the F2 key
4. What were the results of the test? ____________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
5. Check for any DTCs in the AGW. Do you have a DTC related to the wake-up
line shorted to ground? YES NO
6. If yes, what is the fault code? ________________________________________
7. Highlight this fault code and press enter.
8. Unplug the bridge at X30/8 as instructed and press F2.
9. Review the test procedure that DAS wants us to perform, but do not perform at
this time. DO NOT disconnect all of the connectors from X30/8 as instructed.
10. Press F2
11. As you can see, AGW does not know where the short to ground is occurring, so
DAS will give you tests for the individual wake-up lines to the components on
the MOST ring.
12. Select one from the list and review the test procedure.
13. Why are you instructed to disconnect the wake-up line from the individual
components (both ends of the line are disconnected) before you check the
resistance of the wire?

________________________________________________________________

14. Since each component supplies voltage onto the wake-up line circuit, an easier
way to narrow down where the short to ground may be would be to measure the
voltage at each of the connectors at X30/8.
15. What would indicate that the fault was on a specific wake-up line?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
16. Measure the voltage at each of the wake-up line pin connectors at X30/8.

The pin numbers can be found on the

bridging piece of the connector block.

Enter either the voltage measured or

place an X in the pin assignment if
the pin is vacant for all the pin
positions:

1 3 5 7 9

2 4 6 8 10

416 Mod 2.1 MOST Diagnosis (GibsonM, KleinS, CooksonI) 03-11-04.doc 7

17. Check off from the list below what MOST components the vehicle you are
working on has:
COMAND / Audio 50 (HU) AGW
Communication Platform CD Changer
HF or Voice control module Satellite Radio module
Navigation module Smart Cradle (UHI)

18. At this time we will have some pins with power and one or more that have 0
volts (depending on the equipment level). We know that one of the pins that
measured 0 volts is our shorted line. We could use WIS to determine which pin
is assigned to which component; however the wiring diagram is inconsistent to
what we find on the vehicle. Here are some examples:

MY2003 MY2004 MY2004

19. To determine which circuit has the short on it, bridge all the circuits that had
voltage together using the self made hectapus cable in the electrical test kit.
Then perform the SDS / DAS test we did earlier Check of wake-up line to the
MOST components.
20. Looking at the test result and comparing the list to what components are on the
MOST system, we can determine which component has the short circuit to
ground. The faulty wake-up circuit is for the _______________module.
21. We short circuited the wake-up line to ground in the harness. Can you think of
another possible cause for the wake-up line to measure 0 volts?
________________________________________________________________

416 Mod 2.1 MOST Diagnosis (GibsonM, KleinS, CooksonI) 03-11-04.doc 8

22. Remove the short circuit from the MOST system by disconnecting the wire with
the crocodile clip on it in the trunk and verify that the wake-up line now has the
correct voltage.
23. Remove the hectapus harness and reattach the bridge on the X30/8
connector.
24. Check and erase all DTCs.
25. Return vehicle back to its original condition.

If you have noticed any parts that need to be replaced on this vehicle, please inform
your instructor now.
