Founded in 2001 and wholly owned by Marubeni Corporation of Japan, SmartestEnergy
has grown to become the UKs leading purchaser of energy generated by the
independent sector. We focus primarily, though not exclusively, on renewable energy.
The dual focus of the business is on the Generation of energy from a wide variety of
independent suppliers and the Retail of energy to our commercial and industrial
customers.

Currently based in three locations (Glasgow, Ipswich and London) with circa 200 staff,

1 JOB PURPOSE
The Junior Sales Trader is responsible for supporting the Sales Trader in meeting the needs
of Smartests Flexible Contract customers and Smartests Sales and Marketing function on
a daily basis. The Junior Sales Trader is tasked with giving external customers a
combination of competitive prices and outstanding customer service. In addition the
Sales Trader carries out the analysis necessary to support the hedging and management
of Smartests exposure to the market price risks associated with Smartests core Flexible
contract business activities.

3 FOCUS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Carry out and capture, in Smartests ETRM system, power transactions with Smartests
FlexiBase and FlexiPPA customers.
2. Carry out wholesale market trading activities to hedge the Market Price Risk
associated with Smartests core Retail Sales and FlexiPPA contracts and ensure that
these activities are recorded in Smartests ETRM system.
3. Operate the business process necessary to price the Shape and Shape Risk
associated with Smartests flexible and fixed Retail and flexible PPA product offering.
4. Work with other teams within Smartest to create new products to increase Sales
opportunities and higher-margin bespoke products.
5. Work with Smartest Energys systems and other teams to improve Sales Trading
processes, to make them more robust and timely.
6. Work with other areas of the business to improve mutual understanding of the
respective areas and Sales Trading, to both improve company knowledge and
functional interactions that could improve the business.
7. Maintain and develop relationships with Smartests flexible customers and provide
wholesale market information to Smartests key customers.
8. Other ad hoc projects and analysis as necessary from time to time.

4 DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY
1. Within the constraints of the Risk Management Principles and Policies Manual
the Junior Sales Trader is entrusted with some autonomy under the guidance of
the Sales Trader on a day to day basis with respect to hedging/trading and the
pricing of flexible and ETSA business. However, the Head of Trading is ultimately
responsible for the overall success or failure of the Sales Trading function, and the
Junior Sales Trader should therefore ensure that the Head of Trading has agreed
any hedging tactics or strategies as they are enacted.

5 ASSIGNMENT AND PLANNING OF WORK


Work is generated via the following channels:
1. By the job holder - activities, processes and tasks associated with carrying out
trades necessary to manage Smartests exposure to market price risk.
2. By Flexible Contract customers - activities, processes and tasks associated with
carrying out Lock and Unlock transactions as a result of Smartests contractual
obligations.
3. By the Head of Trading - ad hoc tasks / requests from time to time.
4. By others - ad hoc tasks / requests from time to time.
5. By HR dept - completion of the relevant annual objective setting and appraisal
process.

6 WORK RELATIONSHIPS
Internal
1. Sales Support - Ongoing liaison to ensure that prices offered to Flexible contract
customers are valid.
2. Risk Analysts - Aid in the reconciliation of daily P&L figures between expected and
liaise to ensure the swift resolution of trade related queries and maintain the
highest standards of trade entry. Ensure that trades remain in line with credit limits.
3. Sales &Marketing - Provide information/advice on general market conditions
including possible scenarios for future price movements.

External
1. Flexible Contract customers - Provide market reflective price quotes to customers
in any products/periods that they are authorised to transact. Acting as these
customers first point of contact for prompt and curve transaction requirements.
2. Brokers - Principally contact related to transacting gas and power deals,
although also to ensure awareness of current market conditions.

7 MOST COMPLEX PART OF THE JOB


The most difficult part of the role is balancing the demands and requirements of
customers and completing transactions/hedging activities under time pressure, while
also allocating sufficient time to any analytical work necessary to support these activities.

8 SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

1. Relevant Skills and Educational Qualifications:


a. Graduate in numerical degree (e.g. Mathematics, Engineering)
b. Good communication skills
2. Relevant Knowledge:
a. An understanding of the principles and concepts of the UK electricity market,
infrastructure and key players (desirable)
b. Working knowledge of Excel and VBA (desirable)
3. Relevant Experience:
a. 1-2 years in an analytical UK energy role (desirable)
