Hybrid Racing Timing Chain Tensioner Reset V1.

0
Install Tips:

Below you will find tips on how to reset your Hybrid Racing timing chain tensioner for a Honda K series
equipped vehicle. *At no point during these procedures should the piston of the timing chain tensioner be
allowed to spring out of the tensioner body. Permanent damage may result from improper handling. Al-
ways maintain control of the tensioner body and piston. If adjustments to the piston or the body need to be
made at any point during this procedure, maintain control of the unit by holding the tensioner with your
hand and keep your thumb, firmly pressed against the piston, to prevent its quick release.

Reset Guide:
It is often necessary to remove the timing chain ten-
sioner when working on engine components related
to cam timing. This may include tasks such as re-
moving/replacing camshafts, valvetrain, or replac-
ing the timing chain. When reassembling the en-
gine, the timing chain tensioner must be recom-
pressed in order for it to be reused. Following
these procedures will ensure the tensioner will be
properly reset and ready for reuse.

Requirements:
 Bench vice
 Tensioner thumbscrew
 Shop rags

Step 1:
Begin by placing the flat edge of the piston on one
jaw of the vice, as in figure 1a, with the hr logo on
the tensioner facing up. Begin to close the jaws of
the vice and position the rear of the tensioner on
the opposite vice jaw as shown in figure 1b. The
rear of the tensioner should only be a few millime-
ters below the top of the vice jaw. If not, the piston
might not be able to be fully compressed.

Maintain this setup throughout the remainder of the

procedure. Should the tensioner fall from this posi-
tion after the piston has been compressed, perma-
nent damage to the tensioner may occur if the
thumb screw has not already been installed. Never
install a tensioner that you think may be damaged,
as this can lead to engine failure.
Step 2:
Using your fingers, depress the teeth of the tensioner
(like in figure 2) and compress the piston with the
vice. As the piston is pushed in, oil will be expelled
from the tensioner body.

During this step, assure that the tensioner is firmly

and securely gripped by the vice jaws, to prevent
damage to the unit from allowing the piston to sud-
denly shoot out from the tensioner.

Note: As the piston is compressed back into the ten-

sioner, the ratchet teeth should not be allowed to
pivot and engage the teeth that are machined into
the piston’s sides. If the piston rotates as it is com-
pressed, this may occur. If the ratchet teeth do begin
to engage the teeth on the piston, slowly open the
vice up while holding the teeth, as to disengage the
teeth.

Step 3:
As the piston becomes fully compressed, release the
teeth. The inner notches of the teeth will mesh with
the piston grooves. Continue to compress the piston
until the outer notches of the teeth begin to mesh
with the final groove in the piston as shown in figure
3a. Once the teeth are meshed with the final groove
in the piston, tighten the vice jaws.

Note: If the teeth do not mesh with the final groove

(as is the case in figure 3b), slowly open the vice to
allow the piston to slightly extend and repeat step. You
will hear a “click” noise indicating that the ratchet
teeth have advanced to the next groove on the piston.
Step 4:
Ensure the piston is fully depressed as shown in
figure 4a. Begin threading the thumbscrew into
the center hole of the tensioner body.

Continue tightening the thumbscrew until the screw

bottoms out on the tensioner piston to where the
threads of the set screw are visible when looking at
the piston face, as in figure 4b.

If this does not occur, as in figure 4c, adjust the

alignment of the tensioner body by rotating it in the
vice until the screw can be threaded fully. To adjust
the alignment of the piston, it may first be necessary
to allow the piston to extend slightly.

While adjusting the tensioner, ensure that the ten-

sioner’s piston and housing remain firmly secured in
the jaws of the vice.

Step 5:
After the thumbscrew bottoms out on the piston,
slowly open the jaws of the vice ensuring the piston
does not extend.

Do not remove the thumbscrew until the tensioner is

securely installed in the motor. Permanent damage
to the tensioner may occur.
