Good Health (Grades 58): Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting and decision-making skills
to enhance healthDemonstrate the ability to apply a decision-making process to health issues and problems

are influenced by changing information, abilities, priorities, and responsibilities. Develop a plan that
addresses personal strengths, needs, and health risks.

Level 5: Expansion Level 6: Refinement

Lesson idea implementation: Students will create videos in small groups with iMovie that focus a goal for
good health and are instructional in nature. These videos will integrate the use of existing videos pertaining to
the content, still images, music, and audio. All sources must be copyright compliant. Students will select a
goal, write their own scripts, collect sources, and create a video through collaborative editing and teamwork.
Students will demonstrate creativity, appropriate use of English grammar rules, and health related vocabulary
terms. The teacher will serve as a coach and guide, answering questions and providing frequent feedback to
promote higher-order thinking.
The project will be introduced with the start of a unit about health and fitness vocabulary and students will
view the teacher-created example of a video project. They will then choose or be assigned into groups. The
project will take several weeks to complete as it involves multiple technologies, student scripts and student
collaboration. To extend student learning, students can work with an expert from the health field with
knowledge and/or skills relevant to their selected goal. Students can also present their videos to community
members who would benefit from the information provided (e.g. at a community health club or senior citizen
community). Student learning will be assessed through a student-created rubric for the final product which
the teacher will complete when students present their videos.
Importance of technology: The use of multimedia authoring tools is critical to this project because it allows
students to create unique products and use products that mirror those they are familiar with in their
multimedia-rich culture outside of the classroom environment. This project could not be completed without
the use of technology because the real-world connections and authenticity could be lost (if the project were

done as a traditional paper for example). Students who choose to conduct interviews or create their own
audio files will use audio recording and editing tools in addition to iMovie.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Several possible issues surrounding internet safety and student privacy
could arise while implementing this learning experience. For example, students could be unsafe in their use of
images of themselves or other students or community members they interview as health experts. Since the
videos will be shared publicly to expand the project relevance and real-world connections, the teacher needs
to ensure all students have parent/guardian permission if student images or information will be used.
Students do not need to include personal pictures or information like their voice to complete the project;
they can use existing sources that are copyright compliant. The teacher will demonstrate how to find sources
that are free and legal to use in this project and provide examples of resources in an accessible place such as
the classroom bulletin board or website. All students will need to follow common Internet Safety/Acceptable
Use Policies.
