Dear Parent, Guardian, or Caregiver,
My name is Hazel Sparrow and I am excited to be your son or daughters Literacy teacher for the 2017-2018
school year. Id like to make sure that you are aware of the learning objectives I have outlined for this school
year. You have probably heard that the state of Florida has adopted the Language Arts Florida Standards
(LAFS). That means that the instruction will be more rigorous and include more writing. However, I will
continue to provide the support each student needs to be successful. My primary goal is to improve each
students reading comprehension and writing skills by making connections between readings, writing, and
speaking. If you have any questions about anything contained in this letter, please contact me as soon as
possible.

Informational & Literary Text
Students will use a variety of pre-, during, and post reading strategies.
Students will recognize and use text features of nonfiction texts.
Students will analyze the elements of nonfiction and reference sources on Internet websites.
Students will identify main idea and supporting details.
Students will make inferences and draw conclusions based on text evidence.
Students will learn and use a variety of questioning strategies.

Writing
Students will use the writing process and proofreading symbols.
Students will study and learn a variety of organizational patterns in writing.
Students will study and learn language appropriate for the intended audience.
Students will write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
Students will write and publish a variety of genres (informational, narrative, descriptive).
Students will keep an electronic portfolio to document work in progress and completed assignments
(writing samples, video clips, photos, artwork, etc.)
Students will write reflections about the work and learning.



Language:
Students will demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when
writing and speaking.
Students will study Greek and Latin root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
Students will acquire and correctly use tier two and tier three words and study the multiple meanings
of new words.
Students will learn the connotation and denotation of words.
Students will demonstrate the ability to use context clues to determine meaning of unfamiliar words
and phrases.
Student will demonstrate an understanding of figurative language.

Speaking and Listening:
Students will participate in literature circles to discuss different elements of the literature.
Students will give an oral presentation and show understanding of audience, purpose, and content.
Students will read grade level text orally to improve fluency.
Students will learn critical listening skills and evaluate a speakers point of view, reasoning.

Grading:
Students will be evaluated on formative assessments (40%) - class work, independent reading, homework, and
summative assessments (60%) quizzes, tests, oral presentation, and projects. Students will receive letter
grades of A, B, C, or I for incomplete or poor quality class work & projects, quizzes & tests (below
70%). * Quiz, test, and project grades will NOT be recorded until they are returned with a parent signature.

Homework:
Homework (including read aloud log) will be assigned daily (except for Fridays). Completed homework is due
the following day unless otherwise indicated and will be graded on a point system according to the number of
correct responses.
Some activities will be videotaped or photographed as an instructional tool.

Makeup Policy:
Fore each day absent, a student has the equal number of days plus one to make-up any missed assignments.
Students who are absent from school on a published assignment due date must turn the assignment in when
they return to school and may be subject to a grade penalty. Tests and other make-up work may be
completed during lunchtime and/or afterschool by appointment only. Missed summatives and/or
reassessments must be completed prior to the next assessment.

Internet Use:
Students will be using the Internet and other related reading/research activities. Deltona High Schools
computer usage policy will be strictly enforced.
