The Countrys Premier Ibanag City
Tuguegarao City is a Center of Excellence in Education, Commerce, Trade and Culture and as
the Economic Center of Region 02, Tuguegarao City continuously aims for outstanding performance and
competence in administration, citizen participation, community and economic development, cultural arts,
education, fiscal management, infrastructure, intergovernmental cooperation, planning, public safety,
recreation and leisure services, social services, and technology.

I. History

Tuguegarao was founded as a mission center by Dominican Fr. Jacinto Pardo on May 9, 1604
It was made the capital of the province in 1841.
On December 12, 1899, U.S. troops under Bachelor entered the town and Col. Hood was appointed military governor.
On December 12, 1941, during World War II, Tuguegarao was occupied by the Japanese.
U.S. Air Force planes began bombing it in December 1944, reducing it to complete rubble.
It was officially liberated on June 25, 1945.
On December 18, 1999 Tuguegarao was made into a component city by virtue of Republic Act No. 8255.
The citys name was derived from either of the following: garao (swift river current), taraw (a specie of palm tree) and tuggui gari yao (this was cleared
by fire). The last is the plausible of the three. A kaingin may have been pointed to by the natives to the first Spanish arrivals.
II. Climate / Topography

Tuguegarao experiences a tropical climate, with only a slight difference between summer and winter temperatures, and high year-round humidity.

Tuguegarao located is in the southern portion of the province. The city is bordered by Iguig to the north; to the west by the Cagayan
River alongside Solana; Peablanca to the east; and to the south by Enrile and San Pablo, Isabela. The city is almost encapsulated by the Cagayan River in
the western side and the Pinacanauan River, a tributary of Cagayan River, in the eastern part. Small bodies of waters are found in the city, such as the
Balzain Creek which spans the barangays of Caritan Sur and Balzain. Currently, the creek is continuously drying up due to eutrophication and the
uncontrollable growth of water lilies.
Historically, the town was inhabited by Irayas and Itawes who lived and mainly relied on fishing, farming, hunting and livestock raising. In addition, ancient
natives have ventured on weaving cloth and making of household and farm implements.
Cagayan is divided into three congressional districts, wherein the city is included in the Third District together with the other 6 southern municipalities.
The city is 483 kilometres (300 mi) north of the country's capital, Manila, which is an hour by plane and ten hours of land travel.

III. Population
The population of the city as of the 2015 census is 153,502 people, making it the most populous city in the Cagayan Valley region. Most of the inhabitants
are Ilocanos, Ibanags and Itawes Some are of Chinese and Indian descent.

Tuguegarao City has a total of 49 barangays.

IV. Language / Dialect


The Ibanag language (also Ybanag or Ibanak) is spoken by up to 500,000 speakers, most particularly by the Ibanag people, in the Philippines, in the
northeastern provinces of Isabela and Cagayan, especially in Tuguegarao City, Solana, Abulug, Cabagan, and Ilagan City and with overseas immigrants in
countries located in the Middle East, United Kingdom and the United States. Most of the speakers can also speak Ilocano, the lingua franca of northern
Luzon island. The name Ibanag comes from the prefix "I" which means "people of", and "bannag", meaning river. It is closely related to Gaddang, Itawis,
Agta, Atta, Yogad, Isneg, and Malaweg.
V. Products / Tourist Destination
Products and Services

Main farm products are rice, rootcrops, vegetables, poultry, and hogs. There are some fishponds within city limits and the Cagayan River provides some of
the fish supplies of the residents. Like many other small cities in the Philippines, industries consist mostly of furniture and automotive shops, hollowblock
making, bakeries, rice mills, dressmaking, and food processing.

Pancit Batil Patung is a popular noodle dish in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. It is composed of
two parts: the noodles with toppings, and the sauce which looks like an egg drop soup. Poached egg
along with sauted meats and vegetables are topped over the fresh miki noodles, while a piece of
egg is cracked and stirred-in simmering beef stock and poured in a bowl. Both components should be
present when eating this dish to experience optimal flavor. The sauce is gradually poured over the
noodles and meat and it is further enhanced by adding a tablespoonful or two of the chopped onion
and vinegar dip.

The Chicha-rabao is one of the brands developed by the cooperative. It is deep-fried and popped
buffalo/carabao skin added with flavors. It is a variant of the chicharon, which is a popular delicacy
among Filipinos and Spanish-influenced nations. Chicha-rabao is currently one of the
popular pasalubongs from Tuguegarao City.
Tourist Destination

Buntun Bridge this is 2.50 kilometers from Tuguegarao City propoer. It is the longest river bridge in the country at 1.124 kilometers and affers an
unobstructed view of the Cagayan River.

Cagayan provincial Museum and Historical Research Center is for the cultural-oriented. Located at the provincial capitol complex, it was conceived by
the Provincial Board in 1971 and became operational on its inauguration on August 15, 1973 during the traditional Aggao na Cagayan. It is a general
museum and houses an extensive collection of artifacts, antiques, ethnographics, trade wares, heirloom pieces and liturgical works of the province and
fossils of animals that once roomed the valley. The museum houses extensive data on the discovery of Callao man by the national Museum. The center
is only five kilometers from Tuguegarao.
