SETUP

THE WAY IN

- I have a plan for testing the prior knowledge. I will start the lesson with a task to
determine their prior knowledge. The students already know about the Aztecs and
the Incas. So they have to write an A for Aztecs or an I for Incas in each square
when they think that the words or phrases given belong to either the Aztecs or
Incas. This task should be a task on paper shared to each student.

Checklist for
Readiness

- All materials are at hand through a digital checklist (Google Keep) that keeps
track of which materials will be needed for the lesson.
- I have a plan for differentiating instructions. To accommodate the different
learning styles of the students I will be using pictures, videos, and games.
- I know that students can understand what I say. The lesson is taught on the level
of the students and if necessary, brought down to the desired level.

2
- My class is friendly, disciplined, and motivated.
The students are divided into groups of five and they know the rules of the school
and the teacher. They are ready to learn.

Questions are only for guide

Engagement
I will start the lesson with a task on paper to test their prior knowledge.
In 3-5 minutes they have to do the task. After that we will correct this task in
the class. After that I will show them a picture asking what they see in the
picture. Depending on what answers the students give, the lesson will be
continued

The students have to use their logic and ask themselves how to connect what
they see in the picture to their prior knowledge.

Exploration
The first activity of the students is a task on paper. After that they have to
watch a video of Hernan Cortez. How Hernan Cortez came to Mexico and
conquered the Aztecs. After watching the video they have to do a kahoot quiz
game to evaluate what they remember from the video. Subsequently they will
read a text and make a popplet about the text. This is group task that they have
to present after finishing the task. The last task of the students will be
answering some questions in socrative.com to evaluate the lesson.

Explanation
The teacher will ask unequivocal questions with the core concepts (the
right vocabulary that is used in the lesson) of the lesson to get the right
answers from the students.

The teacher must give the student time and space to answer the question
correctly.

give the answer))

3
Elaboration
In this lesson vocabulary like invasion, annexation, conquer should be the
main focus.
I will show them with an example that invasion or annexation is still happening
even now. For example the invasion of Iraq in 2003 by the US.

Evaluation
At end of the lesson the students can do a short presentation about at least
a part of the lesson.
They can answer the evaluation questions in socrative.com.

Pre-Assessment

See below the task for testing the prior knowledge

Assessing
Post-Assessment
Knowledge
The students learn about Hernan Cortez and Francisco Pizarro. They learn how these 2
conquistadores conquer the Aztec en Inca Empire. In the lesson before this they learn
about the Aztec, the Mayan and the Inca civilization, how it was established and how it
grew.
What they dont know is how these 2 empires were destroyed.
This lesson will give them the opportunity to learn about that.

Rubric

First the students will do a prior knowledge task.

After that I will introduce the subject of the lesson.
After the introduction they will watch a video about the conquistador Hernan Cortez and
the conqueror of Mexico.
Subsequently they will get a kahoot task.
In the second part of the lesson they will get a text to read and make a popplet.
The popplet has to be presented by each of the groups.
In the end they will do a socrative.com task.

4
THE WAY THROUGH

The new material is introduced through a central question which will be linked to a
picture: What do see on this picture ?

Depending on what students give as a response, the lesson will be continued. Teacher begins:
After the arrival of Columbus, many Spanish people came to the Americas. Their main goal
was searching for gold and silver. What do you think the main reason was for
searching for gold and silver? The Spanish conquered the Americas, the Aztecs and the
Inca Impire. The Aztecs and the Incas with their weapons were no match for the weapons of
the Spanish, for example the guns, the horses and dogs that they brought to the Americas.
Do you know what weapons the Aztecs and the Incas used for defending
themselves ?

The Spanish used art and deception to defeat these Aztecs and Incas.
These Spanish conquerors are called conquistadores.
Activities and Second Step
Scaffolding I will show them some more pictures during introduction to the new lesson.
(Be specific)
Third Step
On the world map or on Google Earth I will show them where Hernan Cortez disembarked
and where Pizarro disembark.

Fourth Step
They will watch a video compiled by myself.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSQGEQ6q4Wg

After they finish watching the video, we will do a game in kahoot. They will get some
questions in kahoot about Hernan Cortez.

5
Fifth Step
I will start the second part of the lesson.
In this part of the lesson the students will be divided in groups of four.

After that they get a handout with a text. They have to analyze the text and make a popplet
assignment.

They have to present popplet, too. Every group must delegate its representatives for a
presentation.

Sixth Step
End evaluation with www.socrative.com (5 Multiple Choice questions)

How you use Multiple Intelligences to reach different learners

- By using pictures/photos and a video, we meet the visual learners.
Effective - By playing games with the students (kahoot game) the lesson becomes interactive.
Pedagogies - By making the students work in groups, they learn how to work together.
(Be specific) - With the use of ICTs (Socrative , projector, laptop, smartphone) we capture the
students interest.

- The students are placed in groups of 4 students.

Differentiated - Groups are based on learning styles
Instruction - (mixed groups with fast and less fast learners)

Formative assessment with Socrative.com

The students will get 5 multiple choice questions at end of the lesson
(at evaluation)

Use of ICTs
(Be specific)

I will use Google Earth to show the students where Hernan Cortez disembarked and where
Pizarro disembarked.

The use of YouTube videos makes lessons very interesting.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

6
(Not applicable when practice teaching at IOL, but will be used for teaching in local classrooms)

The classroom is organized in a friendly way and suited for learning. 90% of the students are
very motivated for this lesson and 10 % dont like the subject.
Your Organization The timing is suitable because its 9 clock in the morning.

The class is divided into groups of four.

In each group, there is a timekeeper.
Each group has five minutes to work it out.
Your Instruction Verbal Communication:
The teacher lets the students know that time management is very important with group work
and collaboration within is necessary to complete the group assignment successfully.
Non-verbal Communication:
When the group gets too loud the teacher moves closer physically in order to get the group to
quiet down.

The students are responsible for the well-being and order of the classroom.
Your Students Overall the students are well-disciplined and they respect the teacher and each other.
(You can demonstrate They feel safe at school and in the classroom, they give appropriate feedback most of the time.
that) I got this information by observing them.

Encouragement and a Warning

Over time, you will be able to create lesson plans easily, but the first few times, you will probably be working on
this lesson plan again and again. We all encourage you to take chances, to play with ideas, to try out crazy and fun
ideas. Even if those ideas fail, you will do well, because if you dont try anything new, you will become a boring
teacher.
At the same time, PLEASE do not cut and paste lessons from the internet and claim them as your own. To do so is
plagiarism, and you will not get credit for the assignment. The IIED professors use different software to
determine if students are copying and pasting from the web (www.turnitin.com is an example), so I urge you to do
this entirely as your own work.
Best advice: do this yourself and give it your best. Avoid scouring the internet for ideas. You are clever enough.
Make this something you are proud of!
