Why Modified Bituminous Water Proofing
Membrane?
Proved efficacy of water proofing
Aesthetic advantage
Easy applicability
Excellent structural property,rot proof
Cheap in long term economics
Best suited to high rainfall regions like NFR,
ER & western ghat. In Lumding div. 5 rainy
seasons passed without problem after using
this method.
What is Modified Bituminous
waterproofing membrane?
Manufactured from rich bitumen & select
polymer blended together to obtain
excellent heat resistance & cold
temperature flexibility.
Polymer modified bitumen is then coated
on to a dimensionally stable non-woven
polyester/fibre glass to obtain high tensile
strength, tear & puncture resistance &
highly resistant to substrate movement.
Modified Bitumen waterproofing membrane
rolls
Economics
Long term good performance.
( 10 years manufacturers guarantee)

Cost nominal if aesthetic, usability,

( Terrace remains accessible) considered.

Easy availability in markets.

Sequence of operation
The concrete surface shall be cleaned
thoroughly of all laitance, loose particles, dust
etc
Existing substrate treated with any other
waterproofing method like lime surkhi etc shall
be dismantled & surface to be modified by
polymer modified mortar as per manufacturers
specifications.
Apply primer coat with solvent based bitumen
primer as specified by the manufacturer on
cleaned & levelled surface.
Prepared substrate
Application of primer
Sequence of operation
Unroll the modified bitumen waterproofing
membrane rolls. Align the rolls correctly & re-roll
it in alignment before torching.
Use gas burner to heat substrate & underside to
softening points. When the embossing
disappears, roll forward & press firmly against
substrate to bond from the lower end towards the
higher end.
Keep overlap margin for minimum 80 mm in
longitudinal & 150 mm in transverse direction.
The treatment of the horizontal surface shall be
continued to the vertical side wall.
Aligning the rolls
Heating the substrate & underside of roll to softening point
Heating the substrate & underside of roll to softening point
Sequence of operation
Heat both the overlaps & use round tipped
trowel to seal overlap. Excess compound
should be smoothened & pressed into
seam using hot trowel.
All angles & upstands should be sealed
with extra care to ensure the perfect
bondage. Seal the edges well into grooves
& protect with a Polysulphide sealant.
Sealing the
overlaps
Treated surface
Sequence of operation
For non-foot traffic area, apply aluminium
paint over the treated surface.
For foot traffic area, overlay with 50mm
thick concrete screed of 1:2:4 (By volume)
with 10mm & down well graded
aggregates & concrete should be admixed
with a normal admixture as per the
direction of manufacturer.
The concrete shall be cured with water for
atleast 7 days.
Precautions
Surface preparation is extremely important.

Slope of substrate has to be correct to the

minutest detail, standing water is harmful.

Workmanship.over burning,under burning

to be avoided.

No wetness during fixing.

Conclusion
This method takes advantage of the
revolution of polymer science to provide
high strength , non degradable,
impermeable character to traditional
bituminous overlay
No glue fixing, but torch burning gives
permanent bond with substrate.
Hence this method can be effectively
adopted in all areas for waterproofing.
