    What is typography? What do we call the design of printed matters we saw at street signs, magazines, and the web design? Do you know that every typeface we saw around us was planned carefully and painstakingly? It is a wonder how these typefaces came to be. If you want to know who invented them, then you came to the right place. Let us learn the evolution of typography: 1400’s It was in 1400’s that the first typeface was created. According to history, Guttenberg invented movable typefaces in order to give the world a cheaper way to obtain written word. Before that, all written words were done by hand and very expensive. The first typeface is blackletter. It was dark, fairly practical and intense. However, it was not very legible. 1470’s The Roman Type was created in 1470 by Nicolas Jenson. It was inspired by the text on ancient Roman buildings. Compared to blackletter, it was far more readable and caught on quickly. 1501 In 1501 Italics was created by Aldus Manutius. It was created as a way to fit more words onto a page in order to save printer money. Now people use italics as a design detail or to show emphasis when writing. 1734 A typeface that features a straighter serif and more obvious contrasts between thin and bold strokes was created in 1734 by William Caslon. This is what we call today as ‘old style’. 1757 In 1757 John Baskerville created the Transitional type, which is a Roman-style type typeface. The only difference is that it has very sharp serifs and lots of drastic contrast between thick and thin lines. 1780 The first ‘modern’ Roman typefaces called Didot and Bodoni was created by Firmin Didot and Giambattista Bodoni in 1780. Now the contrast was more extreme compared to the previous ones which created a very cool and fresh look. 1815 It was in 1815 that the first typeface with serifs that were squares or boxes was created. It was called the Egyptian or Slab Serif that was created by Vincent Figgins. 1816 In 1816, William Caslon IV created a very controversial typeface. He created a typeface without any serifs which were widely rebuked at the time. It started the typefaces we now call as Sans Serif. It was during this time also that type exploded and different variations were created to accommodate advertising. 1920’s Who was the world’s first full-time type designer? It was Frederic Goudy who developed numerous ground breaking typefaces like Copperplate Gothic, Kennerly, and Goudy Old Style. 1957 Around 1957, Swiss designer Max Miedinger created Helvetica. It was the most loved typeface of our time because it was created with the purpose of returning to minimalism. It was during this time that many other simplistic typefaces surfaces such as Futura. Apple & Microsoft Both Apple and Microsoft rejected Adobe’s PostScript Type and decided to create their own font technology in 1989. It was called Truetype which is not as clean and reliable as the postscript format. However, it allowed for an explosion in font design. Adobe and Microsoft Adobe and Microsoft created a cross-platform font file format called Ope Type. Its advantage is that it works on both Macintosh and Windows computers.
