Teaching Philosophy Statement

BY: Nirmala Ramnanan

As a teacher, I believe all children are gifted with many skills and have their own way of

understanding the world around them. It is my responsibility as a teacher to help them develop

these skills. I hope to achieve this by listening to them and helping them understand themselves

better. Our future depends solely on the younger generation and that is why becoming a teacher

is important to me. This is because my personal stance has always been to make a positive

change and difference in a childs life.

All teachers play a very key and important role in helping our students achieve their goals.

There are many different methods and assessment strategies teachers can use to ensure they are

an effective teacher. All teachers should be able to plan lessons, manage the classroom, meet

with parents accurately grade assignments and work closely with the rest of the staff. These tasks

demand scientific, physical, emotional and effective preparation. It demands the evaluation of

practice and the reform of teacher education. We as teachers must act as teachers and not as

coddling parents.

Having critical thinking skills is an important part in being a teacher. Being able to plan my

work using different teaching strategies will help me achieve my goals and ensure that all my

students are learning. I should have an idea of which students are the slow learners and which

students learn at a faster rate. I will strive to arrive at the best possible solutions for the problems

that may arise. I will also help my students develop certain activities and routines to help them

solve any problems they may be facing.

Being an effective teacher, I must be able to plan my work with specific learning objectives in

mind. Good teaching practice is very important for students learning. As a teacher, I will try to

the best of my ability to motivate my students, stimulate interest in learning, encourage

discussion, teach critical thinking skills and help develop their attitudes toward their school work

and in the classroom. I will strive to meet the principles of good teaching practice and try to

provide the best learning experience for my students. I will engage all my students and provide

and environment where they can all learn. Being an effective teacher means that I must do the

best job possible with the tools and the resources that are available to me. It is my desire for all

my students to be in an environment where they feel safe and comfortable to learn

Over the years there have been many factors that have impacted students learning in the

classroom. As a teacher getting to know my students as individuals will help me understand what

factors might affect there learning. Firstly motivation, of all the factors that can affect how

students learn, motivation might be the most important.

Being able to motivate students towards their goals, is a very important task for all teachers. It

brings us a great joy to help our students achieve their goals. Motivation is important because it

can determine the specific goals toward which learners can strive. It can also affect the choices

that students make towards their future. For instance, whether to enroll in physics or studio art,

whether to spend an evening completing a challenging homework assignment or playing

videogames with friends. Motivation increases the amount of effort and energy that learners

expend in activities directly related to their needs and goals. It determines whether they pursue a

task enthusiastically and wholeheartedly or apathetically and lackadaisically.

Motivation increases initiation, if a student really wants to achieve a goal and they are truly

motivated to achieve this goal. Then there is nothing that can stop them from completing their

goal. Many students have a role model someone they look up to. Students will more likely strive

to follow in that persons footsteps. They are also more likely to continue working at their goals

until theyve completed it, even if they are occasionally interrupted or frustrated in the process.

In general, then, motivation increases students time on task, an important factor affecting their

learning and achievement. Motivation affects cognitive processes. [Maehr & Meyer, 1977,

Pintrinch et al, 1993]. Motivation affects what learners pay attention to and how effectively they

process it. For instance, motivated learners often make a concerted effort to truly understand

classroom materialto learn it meaningfullyand consider how they might use it in their own

lives.

Intellectual factor can also affect students learning. The term refers to the individuals mental

level. In schools, there are often slow learners and fast learners. The slower learners may find it

difficult to understand their work or may have a hard time keeping up with the rest of the class.

Some of these students may also have special intellectual disabilities. Thus, making it difficult

for them to learn. In schools success is closely related to the level of intellect of their pupils.

Therefore, many of these students often encounter serious difficulties in mastering schoolwork.

Attitudes are also important and it contributes greatly in the development of personality.

Having a favourable mental attitude can always facilitate learning in a positive way. Some of

these attitudes are cheerfulness, affection, prejudice, open mindedness, and loyalty. Attitudes

exercise a stimulating effect upon the rate of learning and teaching and upon the progress in

schools. A student being able to complete their work efficiently and on a timely basis means that

this student wants to learn. This make being a teacher very fulfilling.
Personal factors, such as instincts and emotions, and social factors, such as cooperation and

rivalry, are directly related to a complex psychology of motivation. It is a recognized fact that the

various responses of the individual to various kinds of stimuli are determined by a wide variety

of tendencies. Some of these tendencies can be constructive and others are harmful. [Maehr &

Meyer, 1977, Pintrinch et al, 1993]. For some reason, a pupil may have developed a dislike for

some subject because he may fail to see its value, or may lack foundation. This dislike can result

in a bad emotional state. Some pupils are in a continuing state of unhappiness because of their

fear of being victims of the disapproval of their teachers and classmates. This is an unwholesome

attitude and affects the learning process to a considerable degree. This is often-times the result of

bad training.

There are many assessment methods that I can use to know if the learning outcomes were

achieved. Firstly, I would ask questions after a lesson has been taught. This would allow me to

identify the students who are having difficulties understanding the lesson, and I will be able to

assist them if necessary.

Secondly, I will ask my students to write a weekly journal about their class during the week. I

will ask them to include what they have learned, what subjects are causing them difficulties and

any strategies they have found help full. This reflection process is very important for teachers

and students because by reading students journals teachers can identify individuals with

misconceptions and the teacher can assist them where necessary.

Thirdly teachers can have students self-correct. By doing this a teacher will have a clear idea

whether students are acquiring the intended knowledge and skills they need. If not, a teacher will

understand if much more work needs to be done. A teacher can collect assessment results and
monitor their students progress they can also notify them of any further instructions. Also at the

end of the semester, I will have a test. This will allow me to assess what and how much my

students have learned throughout the school term. It would also help me to identify if I will need

to change my teaching methods for my students to learn better.

Technology is something that is used every day and it is changing the world. By integrating

technology into the classroom my students will become more engaged and they begin to take

control over their own learning. They are also able to learn many different skills. There are

many interactive websites that teachers can use to make learning fun and enjoyable for their

students. In the classroom, I will have interactive videos where my students can be engaged and

they can be a part of the lesson. I would allow my students excess to the computer so they can try

interactive websites and review materials. I would also encourage my students to practice

research or creating stories using google. They will also be able to play games using the

computer and they can interact with students from all over the world. I as a teacher can use

technology to create a mark book so I can keep track of students scores and their progress over

the school term.

Technology has had a great and significant impact in our schools today. Having technology in

the classroom has changed how teachers and students learn. Teacher are seeing the potentials and

benefits that technology has in the schools. Technology can motivate students and it helps to

improve their mental skills. Many teachers are now learning how to use technology like tablets,

iPads and computers to shape how their students learning. The students today prefer the use of

technology because it makes learning fun and interesting. The subjects that students have found

to be boring and challenging can be interesting with the use of technology.

In todays, world there are several barriers that are preventing technology from being used in

the classroom. Firstly, many school do not have to time or experience to integrate technology in

the classroom. Teachers are not properly trained and they may not fully understand how to use

the technology. Also, they may not have proper facilities or computer labs for the students to use.

Another barrier may be the reliability of the technology and the cost to maintain. Some schools

may not have sufficient budget allocated for the maintenance of these technology.

My role as a teacher is to be the best teacher I can be and to provide a safe and comfortable

learning environment where all my students can learn. To achieve this, I should have a strong

understanding and I must be knowledgeable of what to expect from students. And I should know

what interest a child and if something in their life is affecting them I want my students to feel

safe and comfortable enough to speak to me. I must also be able to use a variety of teaching

methods and I should be knowledgeable about the cultural and social expectations in the

community that the children live in.

The role of students has change drastically in todays world. They have more knowledge of

the technology that is available to them and many of the students are taking full advantage of

these technologies. Students use technology for research purposes, for emails, through social

media to communicate with friends, families and even for work purposes. Technology is

changing at such an amazing rate and we should all take full advantage of all that it must offer.

Being a teacher is a very important to me because I believe teachers play a key role in shaping

the future generation. I have always enjoyed working with children because I understand the

importance of helping young minds develop. A teachers job may be difficult at times but I have
a strong urge to teach my knowledge to others. Working collaboratively with those who love

learning will help me to prepare them for the future.
