TOWN OF WARRENTON

POLICE DEPARTMENT

PRESS RELEASE

On Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at 2:15 PM, Warrenton Police Department officers
responded to a report of a skimming device attached to an ATM at Union First Market
Bank, located at 216 Broadview Avenue, Warrenton, VA 20186. A skimmer is a small
electronic device that is attached to the ATM card slot. The device will read credit/debit
card information and then transmit that information to a third party. Police Officers, with
the assistance of bank staff, were able to remove the skimmer. The incident is under
investigation.

While this is the first known instance of an ATM skimmer being used in the Town of
Warrenton, we urge the public to always check an ATM before inserting a credit/debit
card. Beware of ATM card slots that are a different color than the rest of the
machine. Also look for any unusual equipment attached to the ATM or attached to the
ATM card slot itself. If the slot is not securely attached to the ATM machine or wont
accept your credit/debit card easily, its best not to use the ATM and call bank
management immediately. Skimmers are sometimes attached to the ATM by glue or
tape.

If you used this or any other ATM in the Town of Warrenton within the last week, you are
encouraged to check your bank statements for any unauthorized use. If you notice any
suspicious activity or if you have any information about this case please contact Detective
Brian Kie at 540-347-1107 x232 or bkie@warrentonva.gov.
