DATA TRANSFER FROM PDS 2D TO PDS 3D ENVIRONMENT

Self Study Presentation by Atul Kulkarni

Introduction

This is a very useful process while working in Piping Designer module. It

enables us to update the active segment data for any pipeline based on the
information defined in P&ID environment. The system verifies the temperature &
pressure service limits when loading segment data from the P&ID Database into
an existing piping segment. Using this method, 20 to 25 % time can be saved
while creating a piping model.

Utility

While working in 3D Piping Designer Module, we can view the P&ID in one of the
windows of Piping Designer. It will be very helpful to create a piping model by
keeping the P&ID in front of us.

Another very important feature of this Data Transfer is that we can place pipes &
piping components in the piping designer by just selecting them in P&ID which is
already open in one of the views as mentioned above. The advantage of this is
that time required for keying in various attributes for piping segment will be
eliminated.

Before transferring data from PDS2D to 3D environment, the P&ID should be

complete in all respects. All the attributes should be assigned to the piping
segments; tag numbers should be given to all equipments & nozzles. Moreover
the P&ID should have been propagated & posted. We should proceed further
only after all these steps are completed.

Methodology of Data Transfer from PDS2D to PDS3D Environment

1) Create a P&ID in PDS2D Environment.

2) Assign piping attributes, tag numbers to equipments & nozzles.
3) Propagate & post the P&ID.
4) Exit from P&ID environment.
5) Before exiting 2D environment, note down the unit number in which you have
created the P&ID. Also note down the drawing number of P&ID.
6) Enter the Equipment Modeling Module. Create an Equipment model as per
the P&ID with tag numbers of equipments & nozzles matching to the P&ID.
Now exit Equipment Modeling.
7) Now enter the Piping Designer. Create a piping model. Open the piping
model.
8) Attach the equipment model as a reference model (File File Options
Ref Models Attach Models Equipment Select Model).
9) Now we want to view the P&ID in one of the windows. So open another
window in piping designer (View Open/Close).
10)From Main tool bar menu, select Piping Place. Place pallet appears.
Select Place from Place pallet. Place Component dialog box appears.
11)In Place Component, select Load from P&ID option. Load Active Data
From P&ID MDB dialog box appears. In this dialog box, under Unit
Number option, key in the unit number of 2D environment, in which we have
created the P&ID. Then under Train Number option, key in the drawing
number of P&ID. Now select Graphical P&ID Data Setup option from the
same dialog box. P&ID Data Transfer Setup Master Database dialog box
appears. In this dialog box, the P&ID now displayed and the number of
windows open in piping designer get highlighted. Now, select the P&ID here,
select the window number in which we want to view the P&ID and select
Accept. P&ID gets displayed in the selected window.
12)Now, again select Place option from Place pallet. Place Component
dialog box appears. Select Connect to design option and select the nozzle
from which pipeline is to be routed. The placement TEE appears on the
nozzle. Now select Load from P&ID option from the same Place pallet.
Select Equipment and Nozzle Numbers option from Load Active Data
from P&ID MDB dialog box. As soon as we select this option, the entire data
of the piping segment from P&ID gets transferred to the piping designer.
Select Accept options from Load Active Data from P&ID MDB and start
routing the pipeline in piping designer.
13)To place the components from P&ID, select Place option from Place
pallet. Place Component dialog box appears. Select Name from P&ID
option from this dialog box. Snap on the component in P&ID, which is already
open in one of the windows. The component gets selected in Place
Component dialog box. Select Accept. The component gets placed in the
piping designer. In this way we can route the piping along with the component
in the piping designer using the active data from an intelligent P&ID.

Scope

This method of creating the piping model will be very useful when we have to
create the 3D models as per the P&ID. We can save a lot of time for keying in
various attributes for piping segments and also to search the various components
in piping designer. Also there will be 100% consistency between the database of
2D & 3D environments.
Conclusion

Before using this Data Transfer method, we should be careful while creating the
equipment model . Whatever tag numbers we have assigned to the equipments
& nozzles in the P&ID, the same tag numbers should be given in the equipment
model. If this is not followed, data transfer will not take place. In order to use this
facility of data transfer we have to follow the steps given above meticulously and
systematically.
