PREVENTATIVE PLAN

The physical environment of the art classroom must be organized in a way to maximize learning

and minimize negative behavior by maintaining control of the elements and operations of the

classroom. Aspects of the plan are delineated below.

STUDENT SEATING
o Students will have assigned seating, which may be subject to change at teacher
discretion and will fluctuate throughout the year.
o Normal classroom layout consists of student desks grouped into units of four
creating table for student work. This may be altered according to instruction
needs; creating large table for collaborative work, pairing, work stations, etc.
o Desks will be organized so that sufficient space between groupings allows for
adequate teacher facilitation during class, but close enough that whole group has
fair access to instruction.
MATERIAL PLACEMENT
o Supplies and material will be organized and labeled for easy recognition, and
housed in shelving and cabinets.
o A large table at the front of the room will be used to hold all materials needed for
the current lesson, as a central access point for students.
o A separate kiln room and spray room will be used for venting and storage.
o Paper cutter and Mat cutter on separate table close to teacher desk, labeled not
for student use.
STORAGE
o Students will have personal shelves/bins organized by class to hold small
individual art works and supplies.
o Drying racks and flat drawers organized by class will be positioned in an area for
student access.
TEACHER DESK
o Teacher desk will be at the back of the room in an area with file cabinets for
instructor use. Desk will not be used during instruction.
INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY
o Projector Screen will be pulled down at the front of the room and images
projected from teacher desk so all students have viewing access.
o White board located at the front of the room in with easy viewing for all students,
and weekly student helpers organized by table listed along the side.
LIGHTING AND TEMPERATURE
o When appropriate windows will allow natural light and proper artificial lighting
maintained.
o Slightly cool temperature will be maintained for student focus and windows may
be opened for fresh air if appropriate.
INSPIRATION AREA
o A small common area for free students to research, read and brainstorm.
Bookshelf, comfortable seating and art games available.
QUIET AREA
o In a corner of the room a table will be set up for students who need to take a
break, or avoid overstimulation. Directions for how to behave and what to do
while in quiet area will be posted. Area will be positive in nature and explained as
a place to refocus rather than punish.
