LESSON 2: Primary Colors and Shapes
TIME: 60 minutes
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this lesson students will know the primary colors (red, yellow and blue) and
recognize geometric and organic shapes.
PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE/SKILL:
Knowledge of colors
Knowledge of shapes
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES:
Explain the primary colors as the big three that make up all colors
Review geometric shapes and introduce/define organic shapes
Divide student into groups of four
Facilitate as students assemble shape pictures

Include shape names in first language

Instruct optional activity of creating a personal felt board in which they arrange shapes
then write the descriptive sentences about placement.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
Participate during instruction on primary colors and shapes
Read and recognize shapes and colors as groups assemble felt shape pictures

Examine example of completed felt board and relation to cards

ASSESSMENT:
Teacher will ask questions during discussion, observe and help students as they create felt
shape posters

placement.

LESSON TIMELINE:
2 minutes-Greet class and settle students at seats
1 minute-Invite students to sit down in carpet area.
5 minutes-Introduce primary colors and define as building blocks of all colors.
5 minutes-Discuss geometric shapes and define organic shapes.
5 minutes-Students guess what shape teacher is drawing on portable whiteboard.
5 minutes-Introduce Felt Shape Activity and demonstrate instructions.
3 minutes-Group students into groups of 4 and direct to blank felt poster board
stations.
26 minutes-Students assemble their posters by reading a card from an envelope (Put
a red circle at the top of the board) and picking the correct shape from their basket.
Teacher facilitates while students work.
2 minutes-Signal the end of the lesson and have students return to seats; teacher
collects felt posters and sets them up side by side in front.
5 minutes- Students reflect on activity.
1 minutes-Students lined up and dismissed.
