UNIT: Printmaking
LESSON 2: Reduction Prints
TIME: 4-5 class periods
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this lesson students will create an edition of three reduction prints
demonstrating their understanding of the linocut printmaking process, tools and safety
procedures. Students will utilize art elements and design principles of line, shape, color, value
and negative space to compose a composition comprised of at least three colors.

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE/SKILL:
General knowledge of printmaking techniques from previous class
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES:
Review general printmaking techniques
Show examples of fine art relief prints
Instruction of objectives, drawing/design procedures, transferring images, printmaking
procedure and safety issues, proper matting and signing of prints
LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
Participate in discussions and ask questions
Create design, number areas, and transfer to linoleum
Cut, ink and print images
Sign and number prints
Complete self-evaluation and participate in class critique

ASSESSMENT:
Teacher will ask questions during discussion, observe and facilitate during studio time, have
students complete self-evaluations and reflection, conduct class critique, and utilize a
performance rubric.
