Stories of Korean Television Series that

Have Captivated Audiences Worldwide
K-Drama The makeup and fashion choices of the main characters in
these series were thrust into the limelight, along with the interior
design and Korean lifestyle that featured in them.

The first Korean television series, or drama, was exported to China in the early 1990s. The gripping
storyline, sweet romance, and family-centered values struck a chord with audiences around the world.
The drama quickly became popular in Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, and Japan. Nowadays,
a large number of Korean television series are shown outside Asia, with a growing audience in the Middle
East and the Americas.

Not long ago, something strange happened on a cold winter day in a city in China: fried chicken and
beer started selling like hotcakes. The merchants found this strange because the combination of beer
and fried chicken was not common in China. What triggered the occurrence? The airing of My Love
from the Star, a popular television series from Korea! In one episode, the female protagonist had
said, Fried chicken and beer on the first day of snow! The Korean lifestyle is being introduced to the
world through television series, starting trends and causing a stir outside of Korea. More people are
traveling to Korea out of their love of Korean television shows.

From Psy to EXO, K-Pop Is as Popular as Ever

Before K-Pop became popular worldwide, Korean pop music
K-Pop
earned recognition through the official sound tracks of
Korean television series.

Shinhwa and NRG were some of the earliest Korean idols to make it on the world stage, laying the
groundwork for K-pops popularity today. In the new millennium, a new generation of Korean singers
such as Girls Generation, Super Junior, Kara, and Wonder Girls took over the scene. The biggest
break for K-pop was none other than the 2012 worldwide hit Gangnam Style by Psy. With more
than one hundred million views on YouTube, the single was truly an unprecedented success. Psys
follow-up single Gentleman (2013) was also an instant hit. Psy has opened a new door of possibili-
ties for K-pop music.

In 2014, the members of EXO took the world by storm with the wit that they displayed on variety
shows. The boy band also has a vocal capability that spans genres. EXO is the prime example of how
K-pop boy bands have evolved over the years. EXO members are active in musicals and television

People may generally associate Hallyu with K-pop, but television
K-TV show
series and movies are becoming an important part of the trend.

Running Man is a show hosted by Yoo Jae-suk, Haha, Lee Kwang-soo, Kim Jong-kook, Song Ji-hyo,
and guest celebrities. The stars have developed their own distinct personalities over time, each with
a unique nickname. Hallyu fans get to see a personal side of their favorite celebrity when they appear
as guests on the show. Some Running Man episodes are shot abroad, and its not hard to see why
the show has fans all over the world.

We Got Married matches two Hallyu stars and follows them through their imaginary marriage. The first
season in 2008 saw the birth of Hallyu star couples such as Jo Kwon and Gain, Jung Yong-hwa and
Seohyun, and Nichkhun and Victoria. Although the marriage only applies for the duration of the show,
the romance between the stars keeps fans on the edge of their seats. Thanks to its popularity, We
Got Married went international. Kim Hee-chul and Puff Kuo and Yagi Arisa and Key are couples who
crossed national borders. Infinite Challenge, Dad, Where are We Going? and I am a Singer are also
gaining popularity with their unique subjects and formats. The show templates are being exported
around the world, making them available in different countries with different backgrounds.

Hallyu Stars that Sparkle on the Worlds Stage

K-Star It takes more than good looks to become a Hallyu star. Acting,
singing, and other talents define a true Hallyu celebrity.

Ahn Jae-uk from Star in My Heart enthralled the Chinese audience in the 1990s. Bae Yong-joon
became a phenomenon in Japan with the series Winter Sonata. The early Hallyu movement was led
by stars from television series. Later, in the 2000s, K-pop and K-TV shows became just as popular,
paving the way for a new generation of Hallyu stars.

Boys over Flowers (2009) star Lee Min-ho became a household name in Asia with his dashing good
looks, great acting, and singing voice. He is known to have a strict routine and humility that shines
wherever he goes. Its no wonder that his popularity skyrocketed when he was introduced to a wider
audience. Lee later appeared in Personal Taste, City Hunter, and Faith, cementing his position as a
Hallyu star. The 2013 television series The Heirs got 17 million hits on a US-based streaming site,
adding more numbers to his fan base. Lee Min-ho will continue to capture the audience with his

draws international attention.
Hallyu fans watch television series, dance to Korean music, and learn the lyrics. Their interest does
not stop there, however; many develop a genuine interest in Korean culture in general. Now that the
world is connected through SNS, more Korean cultural products are being introduced all over the
world. Nowadays, Hallyu is discussed as Hallyu 3.0 or Hallyu 4.0, referring to different trends over
the years. If Korean cultural exports were limited to television series and movies in the past, Hallyu
has become much more influential in recent years. Today, Korea exports more than the remake rights
for cultural products; it also sends along the staff to supervise their production. Indeed, Hallyu has
expanded its reach over the years. Spanning food, makeup, and fashion, Hallyu culture is reaching out

to the world. Despite its incredible development and economic success, Korea remains a mysterious
country. The countrys cultural aside - the colorful traditional costumes, classical Korean music, tea
ceremonies, and calligraphy -are sure to spark interest among non-Korean tourists. Seoul offers a
variety of programs and courses to meet this growing demand. In central Seoul, you will come across
an elegant alley lined with an old stone wall that surrounds a palace. As you walk down this ancient
street, you will notice futuristic buildings such as the Dongdaemun Design Plaza. This interesting
mix of the past and present is what gives Seoul its unique color. K-Culture is defined by its colorful
traditions and modern sensibilities, and it has now become an integral part of the Hallyu movement.

In the last episode of My Love from the Star, Doh Min-joon (played by Kim
Soo-hyun) and Cheon Song-yi (portrayed by Jeon Ji-hyun) share a romantic
kiss in front of the National Theater of Korea. Founded in the 1950s, the
theater has witnessed the history of performing arts in Korea, and it still
plays a pivotal role today. The theater is a must-see both because of its his-
tory and because of its appearance on the hit television series.
