Reading

Strategies

Background knowledge
As it was mentioned before, one of the most important prerequisites for reading is the background
knowledge you bring to it.

Predicting
When students make predictions they are deciding their purposes for reading. Prediction activities work
hand-in-hand with background knowledge.

Self-monitoring and self-correcting

When students self-monitor and self-correct they are demonstrating an ability to recognize that what they
are reading is not making sense and applying various strategies to solve the problem.

Identifying main ideas and summarizing

Identifying the main events or ideas in a story is something that good readers also do. They are constantly
pulling out ideas from the text they are reading and determining what the main points are in each segment
of the reading passage.

Making inferences and questioning

Making inferences and questioning is another strategy that even older students find quite tedious. This
may be due to the fact that students are accustomed to their teachers giving them the questions. But if the
teachers are asking all of the questions, students are not going to become strategic readers.

Types of Reading
Extensive reading

It could be defined from different points of view .Some authors define it as activities of "skimming and
scanning. For others, it is the amount of reading of material.

Intensive Reading

Intensive reading is associated with short texts used to make students explore
the meaning and get familiar with the writing mechanisms. They are used to practice or focus on specific
lexical, syntactical or discoursal aspects of the target language or to practice a selected reading strategy.

OPINION : In order to help students their comprehension of reading and also increase their reading ability
students have to use some strategies.T need to follow this and make their classes more sucsesfull.
Listening

When teaching listening, the task of the T is to improve listening comprehension), and to
develop listening skills appropriate to a variety of listening situations and purposes.

Pre-listening

T needs to provide a lot of pre-listening support, to make SS confident enough to listen/read

effectively.

Pre-L activities: aim to prepare SS for L, in the sense that help SS focus on what they will hear;
narrow down their minds to what come;, activate prior knowledge and linguistic; that is, bring
in the forefront lexis and syntax necessary for comprehending the text.

Activity Types
-Lead in to topic
-Predicting
-Discussion of topic
-Pre-teaching, revising essential linguistic items lexis and syntax.

Opinion.
Its very important for the T to do the pre-listening part in order to make a good listening
activity because Ss will have learnt the enough vocabulary , maybe grammar or expressions of
the audio.
