Scienceisahandonclassinwhichyouwilldomanylaboratoryactivitiesthatrequiretheuseofmanytypes
ofmaterials.Safetyisalwaysthe#1priorityinanyoftheseactivities.Thefirststeptoworkingsafelyinthe
labistolearntheimportantlabsafetyrulesprovidedtoyouinthisstudentsafetycontract.Theserulesmust
befollowedatalltimes.Failuretofollowthemmayresultinremovalfromthelabandanalternativebook
assignmentgiven.Bothyouandyourparent/guardianmustsignthiscontract.Theothercopyshouldbekept
inyournotebookasareminderoftherules.
ThiscontractmustbesignedandreturnedbeforeyoumayparticipateinanyEarthSciencelab.

GeneralGuidelines
1. Conductyourselfinaresponsiblemanneratalltimesinthelab.Nohorseplayorplayingaroundwillbe
tolerated.Safetyforallis#1.
2. Followallwrittenandverbalinstructionscarefully.Ifyoudonotunderstandadirectionorpartofa
procedure,asktheinstructorbeforeproceeding.
3. **Whenfirstenteringascienceroom,donottouchanyequipmentorothermaterialsinthelabareauntil
youareinstructedtodoso.
4. Keephandsawayfromface,eyes,mouthandbodywhileusingchemicals,specimensormaterials.Wash
yourhandswithsoapandwaterafterperformingallexperiments.Clean,rinse,andwipedryallwork
surfaces(includingthesink)andapparatusattheendoftheexperiment.Returnallequipmentcleanand
inworkingordertotheproperstoragearea.
5. Neverreturnunusedchemicalstotheiroriginalcontainers.
6. Askyourinstructorhowtodisposeofusedlabmaterials.Someitemsmaynotberinseddownthesinkor
thrownawayinagarbagecan.
7. Neverremovelabmaterialsfromthescienceroom.
8. Carryglasstubes,beakersorgraduatedcylinders;especiallylongpieces,inaverticalpositionto
minimizethelikelihoodofbreakageandinjury.
9. Neverhandlebrokenglasswithyourbarehands.Useabrushanddustpantocleanupbrokenglass.Place
brokenorwasteglasswareinthedesignatedglassdisposalcontainer.
10. Whenremovinganelectricalplugfromitssocket,grasptheplug,nottheelectricalcord.Handsmustbe
completelydrybeforetouchinganelectricalswitch,plug,oroutlet.
11. Examineglasswarebeforeeachuse.Neverusechippedorcrackedglassware.Neverusedirtyglassware.
12. Reportdamagedequipmentimmediatelytotheinstructor.Donottrytousedamagedequipment.
13. Ifyoudonotunderstandhowtouseapieceofequipment,asktheinstructorforhelp.
