A SENTENCE is a group of words that

expresses a complete thought


-It starts with a capital letter and ends
with a correct punctuation mark.

Example: Daedalus and Icarus


escaped from Crete.

PARTS OF A SENTENCE
I. SUBJECT- It is the part of a sentence
about which something is said.
Kinds:
A. Simple Subject- the main word
in the complete subject
1. Noun
a. Daedalus is a skilled worker.
b. Icarus is playful.
2. Pronoun
a. He built the labyrinth.
b. He is clever.
3. Gerund (verb+ing)
a. Walking is a good exercise.
b. Reading demands
concentration.
4. Infinitive (to+verb)
a. To see is to believe.
b. To graduate is his goal.

B. Compound Subject- has two or more


simple subjects joined by a coordinating
conjunction
a. The parents and the children pray
together.
b. The ring and the bracelet were
lost.
COMPLETE SUBJECT-contains the
group of words acting as a noun plus
their modifiers that tells who or what
the sentence is all about.
a. The story of their adventures was
featured in the school paper.
b. A flash of light appeared
suddenly in the sky.

II. PREDICATE
Kinds:
A. Simple Predicate- the verb or verb
phrase in the complete predicate
a. The scouts hiked in the forest.
b. She minds her own business.
B. Compound Predicate- consists of two
or more verbs that are joined by a
coordinating conjunction
a. The basketball fans cheered and
jeered.
b. The lady received and entertained
her guests cordially.

COMPLETE PREDICATE- contains


the verb or verb phrase plus its
modifiers that tells what the subject
does or is all about
a. Everybody cherishes a word of
praise.
b. Aerobics is a system of exercise.
