Space and Time

Course Title: Developing ESOL

Student Grade Level (Cluster): Grades 9-12 in an American high school

Time: These lessons will take place over a period of two or three days

Main Topics: Prepositions of space and time.

Course Objectives: Students will be able to communicate in the target language, understand
culture, make connections within target culture and language, make comparisons to native
language and culture, and become a life-long learner.

Goals of the Activities: Communication - Learners interact and negotiate meaning in spoken,
signed, or written conversations to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions. Standard
1.1(World-Readiness)
Connection - Learners build, reinforce, and expand their knowledge of other disciplines while
using the language to develop critical thinking and to solve problems creatively signed, or
written conversations to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions. Standard
3.1(World-Readiness)
Learning Objectives: Students will be able to:
organize collected sentences from newspapers that use at, on, and in with 90% accuracy
in verb usage and prepositional use.
create a story using at, on, and in in relationship to space and time with 95% accuracy in
preposition usage.
Instructional Materials:
Samples of items to collect (birth announcements, obituaries, local festival events etc.)
Blank chart for organizing sentences
Newspapers (and or Magazines) and Internet Stories
Student Learning Activities at Home:
Students will be given newspapers or stories on the internet in which they have to look
for examples of where things are located (people, businesses, or recreational areas) and
dates of events (births and deaths).
Students will select sentences containing the above criteria (i.e. addresses and dates)
Students arrange all sentences under three groups and two categories
o Time = at, on, in
The Music Festival starts AT 7PM.
The Music Festival starts ON a Friday.
The Music Festival starts IN May.
o Place = at, on, in
The Music Festival will be held AT the Fairgrounds.
The Fairgrounds are located ON Greenover Street.
Greenover Street is IN Sarsota County.

Class Activities:
Class reviews the collections from home activities
Students create rules of usage for time and place prepositions
Students take sentences and create other sentences using at, on and in going from specific
(at) to general (in).
Students collaborate to make a story (illustrated and possibly with mini-song) of time and
place.

Assessment:
Formative: Students will be monitored throughout the learning process to check for correct
understanding of preposition usage. Feedback will be given in class and with some of the home
assignments, both pre-class and post-class assignments.
Summative: Students will demonstrate, at the end of the unit section, their ability to use
prepositions by constructing a story on a topic of their interest.
