Wheel assembly (1) is connected to housing (5) by two taper roller bearings. Housing (5) does not turn.

Parking Brake Application

The parking brakes are spring applied brakes that are released by pressure. When the parking and secondary
brake valve is not supplied with air pressure, parking and secondary brake springs (14) push on parking and
secondary piston (8). Parking and secondary piston (8) is against service and retarder piston (11). Service brake
and retarder piston (11) will push discs (9) and plates (10) together. Plates (10) do not turn. Discs (9) turn with
wheel assembly (1). When discs (9) and plates (10) are held together, friction occurs. The friction causes the
rotation of the wheel assembly to slow and the wheel assembly stops rotating. Wheel assembly (1) is connected
to hub (4) by splines.

When the parking and secondary brake valve is supplied with air pressure, pressure oil from the parking brake
release pump section is sent to parking and secondary brake oil passage (B). Oil passage (B) is connected to
parking and secondary brake release oil chamber (7). The pressure oil forces parking and secondary brake piston
(8) away from discs (9) and plates (10). Spring (16) and guide (15) pull service brake and retarder piston (11)
away from discs (9) and from plates (10). The discs and the plates will not be in contact and the parking and
secondary brakes will be released.

Service Brake Application

When the service brake or the retarder is applied, oil pressure from the air/hydraulic cylinders is sent through the
slack adjuster to the service brake and retarder oil passage (C) .

Passage (C) is connected to the service brake and retarder oil chamber (12). As the oil pressure increases, the
service brake and retarder piston (11) pushes discs (9) and plates (10) together and friction occurs. The friction
causes the rotation of wheel assembly (1) to slow. A continued application of the service brake or the retarder
stops the rotation of wheel assembly (1). When the service brakes are released, the return springs will push back

service brake and retarder piston (11). The service brake and retarder piston will push oil back into the slack
adjuster.

Brake cooling oil ows in passage (D) and the brake cooling oil cools the discs and the plates. The cooling oil
ows out of brake cooling oil outlet passage (E). The cooling oil returns to the hydraulic oil tank.

Use purge valve (A) to remove air from the service brake and retarder hydraulic system. Use the plug in oil
passage (B) to remove air from the parking brake release hydraulic system.
