Battle of the Bands Contest Guidelines

REGISTRATION
All parts of the registration process must be completed in order for bands to be eligible to compete in the Youth
Fest Battle of the Bands competition.

All bands must fill out the Battle of the Bands Registration Form. A parent/guardians signature must be
provided for each band member under 19 years of age.
Bands must submit a video with their completed application form. To submit your video you must drop
off a hard copy (CD or Flashdrive) of your recording at the North Surrey Recreation Centre - 10275
City Parkway. If you are unable to drop off your video at that location please email
youthfest@surrey.ca to make other arrangements to submit your video.
Videos must be of 1 song and no more than 5 minutes in length
Videos can be submitted in the following formats:
.MOV
.MPEG4
Bands must call 604-501- 5100 or visit a local City of Surrey Recreation Centre to pay the $20
registration fee for their band. Band Registration Number is: 4341659
Bands will receive a confirmation email or phone call when their registration is completed.
All registered band members must be available to play at Youth Fest on Saturday, September 21,
2013 at the Cloverdale Recreation Centre
Band members must be between the ages of 13-21 with the majority of band members being 18 or
under.

ROUND 1 - ONLINE VOTING

All applications must be received by August 2, 2013.


Bands will then be subject to an online voting process.
The online voting will take place between August 6th August 19th
The top 5 bands that have the most number of votes (as determined by the number of votes on each
band video) will be announced on Social Media and on the City of Surrey Youth website on August 23,
2013.

ROUND 2- YOUTH FEST PERFORMANCES

Bands will be informed of their set time at least 10 days prior to Youth Fest
The following stage equipment will be provided (anything needed but not listed below will need to be
brought by your band):
One base drum kit (kick drum, high toms, floor toms)
Cables, mics, monitors, speakers, lights etc
Stage set up: bands will be given 5 minutes for set-up and 5 minutes for take-down. Each band has 20
minutes for their set excluding set-up and take-down. Any additional set up needed will be deducted
from your 20 minute set time.
All staging requests, including props, must be submitted approved two weeks prior to the performance.
No fire products are allowed.
Sound system adjustments will be made by the official sound technician only.
All band members must respect all City of Surrey Staff as well as the official sound technicians.
All band members must refrain from using any offensive forms of communication while on stage.
For example: lyrics that include swearing, derogatory, inappropriate or sexually explicit language
or that could be considered offensive to anyone in any way.
Dress appropriately and not wear any clothing that may depict any pictures or language that might be
deemed offensive.
Discourage members of the audience from unsafe actions like coming on stage, slam dancing or
moshing due to safety issues.
Bands must remove all band equipment from the Guildford Recreation Centre by no later than
12:00am September 22nd, 2013.

SELECTION OF WINNER(S):

The online voting portion of the competition will be judged by the public and will be based on the number of
likes or votes between the designated dates that the online voting is scheduled.
During the live performance at Youth Fest bands will perform in front of a panel of judges from the music
and entertainment industry. The Top 3 winners will be announced on September 21st at 8:30pm. Bands
will be judged based on the following criteria:
General performance
If the band is well rehearsed
Song writing (original songs)
If performing cover songs: Making the song sound different than the original by somehow making it
unique while having an original approach.
Song writing ability (originality, creativity, song structure, song dynamics)
Technical ability (including range, tone, delivery, rhythm, articulation etc)
Audience connection crowd response

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY:

Entrants, upon submission of their entry to the Contest, hereby irrevocably grant to the City of Surrey, the non-
exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free, no-cost license and right to use the entry submitted as part of the Contest,
and all images, in any medium including streaming media, film, television, print, interactive devices, mobile
media, Internet and on-line systems, and digital billboards. The City of Surrey will have the right to use the
entries submitted as part of the Contest in any merchandising, advertising, marketing, or promotion. Entrants
agree that the City of Surrey shall have the sole discretion in determining the extent and manner of use of
entries and are not obligated to use any entry. All entries that are posted on the City of Surreys website and
related social media may be available to be viewed by anyone with access to the Internet

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

By participating, an entrant agrees to a) abide by the Official Rules and the decisions of the City of Surrey,
which shall be final in all respects; b) release, discharge and hold harmless the City of Surrey from all liability,
claims or damages, arising out of their participation in the Contest and the acceptance, use or misuse of a
prize. The City of Surrey reserves the right to cancel or suspend this Contest, and cancel or refuse any entry or
any individual winning the Contest.

PRIVACY:

The City of Surrey adheres to both federal and provincial privacy legislation. Any personal information collected
during this contest will not be shared with third parties.

Planning/Preparedness 20%
* Evidence of performance planning
* Preparation. Tuning were the instruments and equipment made ready prior to performance? Did the band start on
time?
* Evidence of rehearsal e.g. lyrics learnt etc? Appeared ready and prepared to play?
Originality 30%
* Material. How unique did the songs sound? Did the songs fit the set? Did the songs fit the genre?
* Appearance. Did the band look original? Did the band stand out?
* Improvisation. Did the band demonstrate any level of original improvisational skill? I.e. jam out or vocal through an
instrument change, repair or equipment failure
Interface with audience 10%
* Verbal Interaction? Did the band introduce themselves at all? Did the band talk to or with the audience?
* Physical Interaction? Did the band physically participate with the audience e.g. Eye contact, head nod,
acknowledgments, waving, gesturing, dancing with the audience or giving hand signals.
* Confidence. Was the band confident in their interaction with the audience?
Quality of performance 20%
* Confidence/Competence. Did the band look at ease whilst playing? Did the band appear to be able to do what they
wanted to do?
* Set Dynamism. Did the bands setlist appear to play according to a plan i.e. was it well constructed and able to
manipulate the audiences mood?
* Stage Presence. Did the band use the stage effectively? Did the band appear positive about their performance? Did
the band interact effectively on stage? How did the band cope with any problems they may have encountered?
* Conformance to contest rules. Did the band followed the rules stated in the contest i.e. time limit, profanity?
Presentation 20%
* Attitude. Did the bands on-stage attitude appear suitable to their genre i.e. were they Punk if Punk, Raucous if
Rock?
* Appearance. Did the band show personality on stage? Did the band appear to enjoy what they were doing?
* Entertainment factor/Showmanship. Did the band entertain? Did one or the entire band display showmanship
towards the crowd?

OF THE BANDS SEASON 2

MECHANICS

1. Handuraw Pizza Battle of the Bands Season 2 is open to all Cebu-based amateur bands including the Season 1s
semi-finalists
2. Each bands must consist of 3 to 6 members regardless of age and nationality
3. Bands must register by sending the registration form on or before April 14, 2016.

Print, fill in and sign on the registration form
Put the registration form and 150php fee inside a white envelope
Label the envelope with the band name, cellphone number and address the envelope to Plug and Play Records
Drop it to Handuraw Pizza Gorordo then expect for our call
4. Bands must prepare the following:
2 songs (1 original song and 1 cover song) for the elimination rounds.

3 songs (2 original songs and 1 cover song) for the semi-final round.
4 songs (2 original songs and 2 cover songs) for the final round.
5. All rounds will be happening in Handuraw Pizza Gorordo. These are the dates:

COMPETITION FLOW

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. The competition starts at 9pm and ends at 12mn. All bands should be in Handuraw Pizza Gorordo at 8pm.
2. Make sure not to leave valued instruments and gears unattended. We will not be responsible or liable, directly or
indirectly, in any way for any loss or damage of any instrument and equipment incurred as a result of, or in
connection with, the failure to comply with this section.
3. Bands should have their own musical instruments, cords and guitar effects. Borrowing musical instruments and/or
the said equipment may affect the score on the preparation part of the criteria.
4. 1 drum set, 2 guitar amps, 1 bass amp, and 3 microphone stands with 3 microphones are already provided. A
band will be held liable for the damages If defective equipment is noticed, please report immediately.
5. Setup time is 5 mins. If a band goes beyond the allotted setup time, score on the preparation part of the criteria
will be deducted.
6. Cover songs must be played on a bands own version.
7. Bands will be added up to a secret group on Facebook. Through this, they will be able to see their scores live on
a poll. Comments are allowed but offensive comments may ban a member from the group.

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING

Greetings bands! Three Judges will be added to the secret group to vote on a poll. Heres how theyre going to score
you:
Creativity (30%). Every judges vote is 10%. Make sure youre distinctive enough with your original songs. And when
you cover, make sure its on your own version.

Musicality (25%). 1 vote is 10%, 2 votes is 15%, and 3 votes is 25%. This part of the criteria, on this 2nd season, will
be based on how melodious the songs are to the judges and the overall technicality

Stage Performance (15%). Every judges vote is 5%. Judges will be basing on how the band communicates to the
audience.
Preparation (10%). 1 vote is not counted, 2 votes is 5%, and 3 votes is 10%. Make sure that your cords, instruments
and other equipment are in good condition so you can start right away. If you want to tune on stage, make sure its
silent.

Audience Impact (20%). We mean, GANG SHOUTS! Voting online and/or offline is old school, boring and lame.
Bring your friends/fans/supporters to cheer you up. Make sure they sing your songs back to you and respond to
whatever you say on stage. 1 vote is 5%, 2 votes is 10%, and 3 votes is 25%.

Judging will be based on the following criteria:


Interface with audience 15%

* Verbal Interaction? Did the band introduce themselves at all? Did the band talk to or with
the audience?
* Physical Interaction? Did the band physically participate with the audience e.g. Eye
contact, head nod, acknowledgments, waving, gesturing, dancing with the audience or
giving hand signals.
* Confidence. Was the band confident in their interaction with the audience?

* Confidence/Competence. Did the band look at ease whilst playing? Did the band appear to
be able to do what they wanted to do?
* Set Dynamism. Did the bands set list appear to play according to a plan i.e. was it well

* Stage Presence. Did the band use the stage effectively? Did the band appear positive
about their performance? Did the band interact effectively on stage? How did the band cope
