ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
2001
Environmental Preservation

Humankind has long and earnestly pursued a life of abundance

and convenience. Since the Industrial Revolution, and in the 20th
century in particular, rapid advancements in scientific technologies
have turned the dreams of humankind into reality, but they have
also brought about serious adverse effects on the environment.
Global environmental problems, such as global warming, the
depletion of resources, and harmful chemical substances such as
dioxin, are too numerous to enumerate. All of these problems are
the results of the actions of humankind, and as we continue to
work for economic development in the 21st century, we must also
strive to protect the environment. This is indeed a major objective
to be fulfilled by humankind.

Recognizing that it is the business activities of industry,

manufacturers in particular, that place most of the burden on the
global environment, Shimadzu is working hard to promote
environment-related activities. Still, we must make the environment
one of the most important factors in our business operation in
order to bring concrete form to our corporate concept of "Realizing
the hope for the well-being of mankind and the earth." Shimadzu is
dedicated to promoting a wide range of environmental
preservation activities based on three primary concepts -- reducing
the environmental burden created by our business activities,
contributing to global environmental preservation through
technological development, and broadening the scope of our
activities well beyond the walls of our factories and offices.

We have summarized our environment-related activities in this

Environment Report for Fiscal 2001. We hope this report will help
deepen your understanding of our company and its activities, and
that it will also deepen your awareness of today's environmental
problems.

President and Director,

Shimadzu Corporation

Environmental Auditing
The full-scale implementation of environmental audits, by both internal and external environment
auditors, is needed to realize ongoing improvements to environmental preservation efforts.
Environmental auditing is indispensable to the effective operation of environment management systems
and to the achievement of far-reaching enhancements to environment improvement activities.

Effects: Calculations were limited to items for which there was a calculation base. The basis for comparison was taken as fiscal 1995,
the year prior to the start of preparations for ISO acquisition activities at Shimadzu. The results show how much Shimadzu environmental
preservation activities have reduced the burden placed on the environment, and how much cost reduction has been achieved.
Expenses Related to Training, Meetings and Social Projects: The total is calculated by multiplying the total number of man hours for
personnel involved in the corresponding project by a unit cost of 5000 per hour.

Technologies That Reduce Environmental Burden
Today, as demand grows stronger for means of accurately diagnosing global environmental

ideally suited to the diagnosis of the health of our planet. Shimadzu is also working in the research
of new technologies to prevent global environmental pollution. Environmental preservation through

Activities That Contribute to the Societies We Serve
Through its own corporate activities, Shimadzu has gained considerable knowledge about environmental
preservation. Shimadzu is now working to spread this knowledge beyond its corporate walls, so that it may be
used by regional communities, in school education, etc. Shimadzu is particularly interested in assisting in
environmental education at elementary schools, an effort we believe to be extremely important.

Support for Activities outside of Shimadzu Corporation

The third pillar of Shimadzu's environment-related activities is formed by its support
for the activities of other groups and organizations.
Realizing that there is a limit to how much Shimadzu can do on its own, the corporation is also putting major
effort into supporting the activities of other groups and organizations. This includes the transfer of
environment-related technologies to overseas organizations, the acceptance of trainees from abroad, and the
holding of environment-related seminars.

Award from the Recycling Council

Shimadzu has received an award for meritorious achievement in the
promotion of recycling from the Recycling Council. This award recognizes
Shimadzu's meticulous efforts to separate waste for recycling, the
participation of all Shimadzu employees in recycling efforts, and the
achievements the company has made in recycling.

Occupational Safety and Sanitation
The guarantee of the safety and health of our employees, based on a respect for human nature, human life, and
human development, is an inseparable part of a corporation's activities to provide products on which its
customers can rely. Shimadzu recognizes that ensuring a safe workplace is a major social responsibility of the
corporation, and is putting major effort into making Shimadzu work sites as safe as possible.

Building a Healthy Mind and Body

In recent years, there have been marked improvements to work environments and
a decrease in occupational illnesses, thanks to many years of effort.
Today, however, the primary obstacles to health are common inflictions (cancer, diabetes, etc.), and work-
related illnesses (inflictions caused or aggravated by work conditions). As such, Shimadzu is continuously
working to enhance its activities to promote the health of Shimadzu employees.

Shimadzu's Health-Promotion Systems

Shimadzu has implemented a walking program to provide an

interesting way to promote health and physical activity. Many
employees are participating in this ongoing program, plotting the
number of steps walked on a map of Japan to illustrate the
equivalent distance traveled. Shimadzu also uses its corporate
network to provide information about health and fitness, provide
counseling for VDT stress, and to answer questions about medical
examinations in order to help employees with voluntary health
management efforts. To promote mental health, the corporation has
also established counseling rooms and is working to promote
managerial awareness of employee concerns. With the cooperation
of family and physicians, Shimadzu strives to discover potential
problems as early as possible and implement suitable measures to
resolve the problems.
