THE BERNOULLI EQUATION

The most used and abused equation in fluids mechanics

THE BERNOULLI EQUATION
The most used and abused equation in fluids mechanics

Newton's Second Law F =ma

If viscosity can be neglected, the fluid motion depends only from pressure and gravity.
On a particle of fluid :

(Net pressure force)+(Net gravity force)=(particle mass)*(particle aceleration)

Each fluid particle motion is described by its velocity vector (direction and magnitude)

It follows a particular path, whose shape depends on

its velocity.

Its current location is a function of initial conditions

In steady flows each succesive particle that goes

through a point follows the same fixed path.

The velocity vector is tangent to the path.

The lines tangent to the velocity vectors are the streamlines

THE BERNOULLI EQUATION
The most used and abused equation in fluids mechanics

s=s(t )=distance
R= R( s)=local radius of curvature

v =ds / dt

a=dv /dt

a s=dv /dt=( v / s)(ds /dt )=v ( v / s)

On streamlines coordinate system: 2
a n =v / R
THE BERNOULLI EQUATION
The most used and abused equation in fluids mechanics

F s = m as = m v vs = V v vs
W s= W sin = V sin

F ps =( p p s ) n y ( p+ p s) n y=2 p s n y
p s
But: p s
s 2
p p
Thus: 2 p s n y= s n y= V
s s

F s= W s+ F ps =( sin ps ) V = V v vs
p v
sin = v = a s
