PREFACE
Part II (1879-1886) of the microfilm edition of the Thomas A. Edison Papers is a continuation of Part I
(1850-1878). Part II begins with the year 1879 when Thomas Edison initiated intensive work on the incan-
descent lamp, and it concludes with the year 1886 when he returned to New Jersey from New York City to live
with his new wife, Mina Miller Edison. Many historians regard these eight years of invention and en-
trepreneurship to be among Edison's most fertile and influential ones.
During the period documented by Part II of the microfilm edition, Edison and his associates developed the
first commercially practicable incandescent lighting system, obtained financial support for research and de-
velopment from national leaders in industry and banking, covered a multitude of technical developments with
more than 400 U.S. patents, established critically important manufacturing facilities for producing equip-
ment for the Edison system of electrical lighting and power, generated local financial and entrepreneurial
resources that established Edison illuminating companies in dozens of medium-sized American cities, and
promoted Edison lighting systems in Europe, South America, and Asia. These documents provide a founda-
tion for historical understanding of the establishment of the electrical manufacturing and the electric utility
industries in America. A large number and a wide range of manuscripts reveal the personal, technical, politi-
cal, social, and economic opportunities and difficulties that accompanied every stage of development, from
Edison's early conceptions of the design of his incandescent lighting systems to the establishment of the
business institutions that constituted the new industries. These documents also show Edison as a prolific
inventor, working closely with his inventive and entrepreneurial associates and participating in a large and
diverse technical community. They indicate the variety of roles that he and his associates played and dis-
close the sharply competitive national and international technical and business environment within which
Edison's initiatives occurred.
During these years Edison also worked on a multitude of other projects. As a direct product of his electric
lighting experiments he constructed an experimental electric railroad at Menlo Park, devised a magnetic ore
separator, and established companies to exploit both these inventions. He also continued his earlier interest
in telegraph and telephone technologies. In 1879 he developed the electromotograph telephone for Great
Britain and in 1884 began telephone experiments for the Bell Telephone Company. In association with
Patrick Kenny, a New York telegraph inventor, Edison developed afacsimile telegraph, which he exhibited at
the 1884 Electrical Exhibition in Philadelphia. They also devised a chemical recording stock quotation tele-
graph that Edison offered to the New York Stock Exchange. In 1886 he began work on an improved phono-
graph, and this became one of the principal projects at the new laboratory that he built in West Orange.
During this period Edison received world-wide popular acclaim and acquired great wealth. Throughout
the early and middle years of the 1870s, he constantly scrambled to find financial support for this work. During
that time he developed a reputation in the telegraph community as an inventor of unusual talent. With the
invention of the phonograph in 1877, the thirty-year-old Edison suddenly received international popular re-
nown. While his claim ayear laterto have invented a practicable incandescent light was met with a mixture of
scepticism and applause, he ultimately defied his critics. In the early and mid-1880s he made significant
technical achievements, energetically promoted his lighting system in the face of marked competition from
his peers, and became a millionaire.
Edison's private life during this period underwent significant change. In the early 1880s he and his wife
Mary moved with their three young children from a large house in rural Menlo Park to a series of hotel apart-
ments in New York City. As the business demands on Edison's time increased, Mary's health declined. She
died in 1884, and the thirty-seven-year-old widower faced responsibility for three pradolescent children.
Within a year the world-famous inventor-entrepreneur met Mina Miller, the young daughter of a successful
Akron, Ohio, farm implement manufacturer and co-founder of the Chautauqua Institution near Jamestown,
New York. Early in 1886 Thomas Edison and Mina Miller married. They established their home in the private,
Preface
planned community of Llewellyn Park at West Orange. With the new home in New Jersey and the vicissitudes
of business in New York, Edison began to envision a return to a new and much larger laboratory in a bucolic
valley near Llewellyn Park. Just as Part I of the microfilm edition concludes with Edison turning from his fame-
making phonograph work toward new horizons in electric lighting, so also Part 11 concludes with Edison with-
drawing from his strongly entrepreneurial and managerial role in electrical manufacture and generation, and
returning to the laboratory.
Despite its much largersize, Part II of the microfilm edition is organized and presented in amanneressen-
tially identical to Part I. With its 100,000 pages of documents, it is about 21/2 times the size of Part I and in-
cludes about 50 percent of the documents for this period that are in the archives at the Edison National His-
toric Site in West Orange. The number of records in the computer control system that generates the indexes
for Part II is nearly 31/2 times that for Part I.
Like Part I, the Guide for Part II contains the three major indexes, series notes, a chronology, and ex-
planations of editorial procedures, but the editors have repeated neither the essay on the history of Thomas
Edison's papers nor the one on the history of the Edison Papers project. Two new sections have been added:
a listing of Edison companies and errata for both Part I and Part II. Because the number of Edison business
organizations increased sharply during the years covered by Part II, the editors have identified and listed key
companies. In addition, the red-faced editors have listed their known errors and corrections for the Guide to
Part I and for the microfilm for both Parts I and II. Users of this edition are urged to inform the editors of any
errors that they may discover so that they and their corrections may be included in the errata in subsequent
parts. Please write: Editors, Thomas A. Edison Papers, Rutgers, The State University, New Brunswick, New
Jersey 08903.
The reader's attention is drawn to three collections of material that contain significant numbers of
documents that fall outside the time period for Part II. Two of the collections contain documents relating to
Edison's close associates, Charles Batchelor and Francis Upton. Both collections are located at the Edison
National Historic Site in West Orange and each has its own archival integrity. Therefore, each was filmed as a
separate collection; and the film contains a selection from all of the documents from each collection, not just
from the time period for the main body of documents in Part II. The third collection contains documents that
belonged in Part I but were stolen from the Edison National Historic Site in 1976 and only recovered in 1985
after publication of Part I. The documents in that collection pertain principally to the phonograph.
A project of the scale and complexity of the Thomas A. Edison Papers can only be successful through the
encouragement, cooperative endeavor, and support of many people and organizations. The editors of the
Edison Papers are fortunate to have the strong backing of its Sponsors: Rutgers, The State University; the
National Park Service at the Edison National Historic Site; the New Jersey Historical Commission; and the
Smithsonian Institution. Several representatives of the sponsoring institutions have given long-standing per-
sonal support and direction to the project. These include Edward J. Bloustein, President of Rutgers Universi-
ty; T. Alexander Pond, Executive Vice-President of Rutgers University; Tilden G. Edelstein, Dean of the Fac-
ulty of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers University; Roy Weaver, Superintendent at the Edison National Historic
Site; Edward J. Pershey, Supervisory Curator at Edison National Historic Site; Bernard S. Finn, Curator of
Electricity at the National Museum of American History atthe Smithsonian Institution; Bernard Bush, Execu-
tive Director of the New Jersey Historical Commission; and Howard L. Green, Research Director, New Jer-
sey Historical Commission.
This edition is made possible because of key financial support from Rutgers University, the Edison Na-
tional Historic Site, public and private foundations, private corporations, and individualsas acknowledged
in the pages preceding this preface. Moreover, this material is based upon work supported by the Program in
the History and Philosophy of Science at the National Science Foundation under Grant No. SES 82-13220-
04, by the Program in Research Tools in the Division of Research atthe National Endowmentforthe Humani-
ties under Grant No. RE-20341 -84, and by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation of New York City. Directors and
program officers at these foundations have been especially helpful, particularly Ronald Overmann at Na-
tional Science Foundation and Katherine Fuller at National Endowment for the Humanities.
The Edison Corporate Associates, a small group of executive leaders, have provided major assistance in
obtaining financial contributions and grants from private foundations, corporations, and individuals. William
Hittinger, Vice-President for Corporate Research and Development (now retired) at RCA, has exercised
significant leadership as chairman of this group. The Rutgers University Foundation, under the direction of
Bruce Newman, has worked closely with the members of the Edison Corporate Associates in this campaign.
Ronald Miller, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, has exerted special leadership and effort on
behalf of the project.
Preface
The Edison Papers is fortunate to have outstanding presses for both of its editions: The Johns Hopkins
University Press for the book edition and University Publications of America for the microfilm edition. UPA
and its staff have responded well to the needs of this unusually complex microfilm edition. Especially notable
in their effort for Part II are John and Michael Moscato, Paul Kesaris, Dale Reynolds, James Glover, Risa
Jewell, Cynthia Hancock, Laura Harrison, Barbara Stout, Janet Macik, and Treeva Wayne.
Numerous organizations and individuals outside of the project have also contributed to Part II of the mi-
crofilm edition. The National Historical Publications and Records Commission has endorsed the Edison
Papers project and members of the staff of NHPRC have given important counsel over the years. Brooke
Hindle, Melvin Kranzberg, and Edward C. Carter II as well as members of the Editorial Advisory Board have
given substantial counsel. Beverly Brown of the Northeast Document Conservation Center provided impor-
tant technical information about the filming of the Charles Batchelor scrapbooks. Though the names of
Leonard S. Reich, Susan Schultz, and Pamela Kwiatkowskiformer members of the staff of the Edison
Papersdo not appear on the title page, each has contributed to Part II.
Within the institutional settings for the two offices of the Edison Papers, many people have contributed
eitherdirectlyorindirectly. At the Edison National HistoricSitewhere all of the documents contained in Part
II are locatedEdward J. Pershey and Mary B. Bowling have been true partners in the editorial process.
Others in the curatorial division who have assisted include Eric Olsen, Leah Burt, Marilyn Kyles, and Gladys
Kyles. Others at the Edison National Historic Site have also assisted in a variety of capacities, including Roy
Weaver, Marjorie E. Taliaferro, Karen Giacobbe, Julie Colatrella, Louis Venuto, and Robert Zimmerman.
Likewise, many people within the faculty, library, and administration at Rutgers University have provided
vital assistance and support. Besides President Bloustein and Vice-President Pond, this project is indebted
to Provosts Kenneth Wheeler, Jean Parrish, John Salapatas and Robert F. Pack; Vice-Presidents Nathaniel
Pallone and Jose Steinboch; David A. Gayer, David Scott, Andrew Rudczynski, Albert Hanna, David A.
Rumbo, Donna Estler, Muriel Wilson, Helen Gertler, Joseph Harrigan, Ruth Scott, Barbara Dawson, John
Gillis, Richard P. McCormick, Ruth Simmons, Francis Johns, Ron Becker, Leonard Dreifus, and the staff of
the Center for Computer and Information Services.
The editors of the Edison Papers conclude their acknowledgements with a special note of appreciation
for two people whose names do not appear on the title page but who are absolutely central to the work of this
project. Our Assistant to the Director, Helen Endick, and Secretary, Grace Kurkowski, are both highly talent-
ed and deeply devoted individuals. They perform their jobs in a truly outstanding manner and do a number of
editorial tasks as well. Their talent, devotion, and good humor continue to greatly facilitate the work of this
project.

EDITORIAL PROCEDURES
Scope of the Edition
The Thomas A. Edison Papers: Part II (1879-1886) is the second of a projected six-part selective micro-
film edition of the correspondence, laboratory notebooks, and other papers of Thomas A. Edison. All of the
documents appearing in Part II are from the archives at the Edison National Historic Site (ENHS) in West
Orange, New Jersey. Important Edison documents for this time period also exist in other repositories in the
United States and Western Europe. A selection of this material will be published in a subsequent part of the
microfilm edition.
Not all of the documents appearing in Part II fit neatly within its chronological limits. Notebooks, account
books, and other bound volumes that begin during the period 1879-1886 are usually filmed in their entirety
regardless of the date of the last entry. For example, there are several volumes in the Account Series that
begin in the early 1880s and continue through the 1890s. Many of the documents in the eight-volume set of
litigation records relating to Edison's patent infringement suit against William E. Sawyer and Albon Man
(Edison Electric Light Company v. United States Electric Lighting Company) also date from the period after
1886. However, these volumes are included in Part II because the suit itself was initiated in 1885 and because
the events detailed by the testimony all occurred prior to 1887.
Other groups of documents are also occasionally filmed as a unit, even though they cut across the
chronological boundaries of this edition. Included in the Special Collections Series, for example, are two
extensive collections of the papers of Edison's principal associates, Charles Batchelor and Francis R. Upton.
Although the majority of items in both collections date from the period 1878-1886, the documents span the
years 1871 -1918. In order to preserve the integrity of these important collections, all of the selected items
were filmed in Part II.
Selection of Documents
1. General Principles. The microfilm edition as a whole will encompass approximately 10 percent of the
total number of extant Edison documents. In general, the edition will include: (1) documents that Edison
generated or had prepared under his direction; (2) documents written by or sent to Edison's principal labora-
tory and business associates such as Charles Batchelor and Francis R. Upton; (3) correspondence and
other incoming documents containing substantial annotations by Edison; (4) other important documents
that Edison probably saw or was influenced by; and (5) documents that contain significant information about
Edison, his laboratory and business associates, and their activities. Documents that will not be selected
include: (1 ) routine financial documents such as bills, receipts, invoices, vouchers, checks, and orders; (2)
many of the day-to-day business records of the Edison companies; and (3) unsolicited incoming correspon-
dence relating to matters outside the mainstream of Edison's inventive, business, and personal activities.
2. Selection Principles for Part II. The ENHS archives hold approximately 200,000 pages of documents
for the period 1879-1886less than six percent of the 31/2 million pages in the archives. Part II of the micro-
film edition contains approximately 50 percent of the total documentation at the ENHSfor this time period. All
of Edison's important business correspondence and almost all of the laboratory notebooks are included. On
the other hand, routine financial documents, routine business correspondence, and unsolicited letters to
Edison generally were not selected. In addition, numerous documents were excluded because the informa-
tion contained within them merely duplicated the information inother, selected, documents. For example, the
copies of claims for Edison's issued patents found in the three patent application casebooks on reel 45 were
not filmed because the complete set of Edison's U.S. patents is already available in Part I of the microfilm
edition. At the same time, the copies of the claims for abandoned and rejected patent applications were se-
lected because this information cannot easily be found elsewhere.
15
Editorial Procedures
The notebooks, account books, litigation records, and other bound volumes included in the microfilm
edition were usually filmed in their entirety. However, facing pairs of blank pages, totally illegible pages, and
pages containing copies of documents found elsewhere on the microfilm were generally not filmed. In addi-
tion, routine business correspondence in the letterbooks was not filmed, and overlapping and multipage
clippings in the scrapbooks were filmed in their entirety only when they related directly to the affairs of Edison.
The letters, reports, loose notes and drawings, and other unbound documents included in the microfilm edi-
tion were also filmed in their entirety. However, the dockets and endorsements entered onto the back of such
documents were not filmed except when they contained significant information not found in the document
itself.
The guidelines and principles enumerated above are broad statements of the overall philosophy and
approach of the editors. More specific selection statements can be found on the explanatory targets preced-
ing the documents on the microfilm.
Organization and Arrangement of the Collection
The microfilm edition is intended to provide the researcher with the most important documents in the
ENHS archives and with an entree to those documents not selected. Accordingly, the documents for the
period 1879-1886 appear on the microfilm in eleven series that parallel existing record groups within the
archives: (1 ) Notebook Series, (2) Patent Series, (3) Litigation Series, (4) Document File Series, (5) Letter-
book Series, (6) Legal Series, (7) Account Series, (8) Menlo Park Scrapbook Series, (9) Miscellaneous
Scrapbook Series, (10) Special Collections Series, and (11 ) Company Records Series. The Series Notes in
this guide provide detailed descriptions of the contents of each of the series.
The organization of the documents in the ENHS archives has presented numerous and complicated
editorial problems. While there are some large and well defined archival series, there are also many small
collections scattered throughout the archives, as well as numerous caches of unorganized material. Even
the large series such as the laboratory notebooks and the Document File pose challenging organizational
problems.
The strategy in dealing with bound volumes has been to adhere as closely as possible to the organiza-
tional system devised by Edison and his associates. Thus the laboratory notebooks for the years 1878-1882
were organized according to their original Menlo Park numbers rather than the "N-numbers" subsequently
assigned by the archivists at the ENHS. Whenever it was not possible to ascertain a preexisting organization-
al system for a group of bound volumes, the editors devised a system that seemed appropriate for the docu-
ments in the set. In the caseof Edison's letterbooks, for example, adistinction was made between the general
series of letterbooks and more specialized letterbooks generated by the Edison Ore Milling Company, the
Thomas A. Edison Construction Department, and other Edison companies. The general letterbooks were
arranged in chronological order (according to the earliest date in each book). The remaining letterbooks were
grouped according to the company or individual generating the book; within each grouping, the books were
filmed in chronological order. The books comprising the Account Series were ordered according to type (lab-
oratory accounts, family accounts, etc.) and were subordered into summary accounts, books of original en-
try, and cost accounts in accordance with standard accounting procedures.
The Document File presents the most challenging organizational problems. The approximately
500,000 pages of incoming correspondence and other unbound material, covering the years 1850-1947,
areorganized by year and within each yearby subject. Unfortunately, the attempttoimplementthis system at
the ENHS has resulted in numerous archival and editorial problems. For example, loose notes and drawings,
many of which are undated and difficult to identify, were forced into the subject-chronological system and
separated from related material in the laboratory notebooks. Since correspondence dealing with two or more
subjects could be filed under only one, interrelated correspondence for a particular year was often scattered
in numerous subject folders. This problem was aggravated by numerous misf ilings and by excessive, incon-
sistent, and overlapping subdivisions within major subject categories like "electric light," "telegraph," and
"telephone."
In cooperation with the archivists atthe ENHS, the staff of the Thomas A. Edison Papers developed a set
of organizational guidelines for the Document File and reorganized the folders for the years 1879 through
1886 accordingly. Technical notes and drawings were removed from the file and reorganized into a separate
collection within the Notebook Series. Unsolicited correspondence requesting advice or information about
Edison's inventions was separated from the business correspondence and organized in folders entitled
"Edison, T. A.Advice" and "Edison, T.A.Unsolicited Inquiries." Other subject headings such as "Edison,
T.A.Suppliers" and "Edison, T.A.Visitors" were created to separate routine correspondence from im-
16
Editorial Procedures
portant documents directly related to Edison's personal, business, and inventive activities. In addition, mis-
filings were corrected, the subdivisions within each subject category were standardized, and their number
was significantly reduced.
Within each folder in the Document File Series, the documents appear in chronological order. Docu-
ments dated by month but not by day follow all other documents for that month. Documents dated only by year
follow all other dated documents for that year. Undated documents attributed to that year follow at the end of
the folder. The Document File system does not work ideally for multidated documents, such as account
sheets, that cut across a span of years. In most cases, multidated documents were organized according to
their earliest date. However, in cases where a date was also assigned to the entire document, the document
was filmed under that date.
A more detailed discussion of these organizational principles and strategies can be found in the 25-page
manual, "Guidelines for Document File Organization and Selection." This manual is available upon request
from the Thomas A. Edison Papers, Rutgers, The State University, New Brunswick, New Jersey 08903.
Targets
Targets are editorial aids that appear on the microfilm to assist the reader in using the materials in the
collection. Targets introduce each series, each major subseries, and the individual volumes and folders that
appear in the edition. The series and subseries targets are essentially more detailed versions of the Series
Notes in this guide. The target preceding each folder or volume provides information about authorship, inclu-
sive dates, and number of pages (for bound volumes). Also included are a brief description of the character
and contents of the folder or volume and, wherever appropriate, cross-references to related materials. Each
target also provides a brief description of any material in the folder or volume that was not selected for filming.
The targets preceding the notebooks, account books, and most other bound volumes also contain an enu-
meration of missing pages and of blank pages not filmed.
Occasionally, targets also accompany individual documents in order to: (1) explain relationships
among documents (for example, the targets ENCLOSURE and ATTACHMENT); (2) describe multiple ver-
sions of adocument (for example, the targets COPY FOLLOWS and COPY; TRANSLATION FOLLOWS and
TRANSLATION); (3) supply missing information (for example, the date or author of a letter); and (4) note
missing information (the target INCOMPLETE).
An attempt was made to keep the targets as concise as possible and to avoid including speculative and
subjective judgments about the contents of laboratory notebooks and other complicated technical docu-
ments. The reader is cautioned, however, that reference to specif ic technologies in the targets has necessar-
ily resulted in a certain amount of oversimplification because many of the technologies are interrelated. The
specific technologies mentioned in each of the targets should not, therefore, be regarded as all-inclusive.
Because of the large number of items in the edition and the difficulty of anticipating the legibility of a
document on microfilm, targets are not generally used to identify individual documents that are faint, discol-
ored, water-damaged or otherwise difficult to read in theoriginal. In cases where a particularfolderor volume
contains a large number of such documents, the problem is noted in the target introducing that folder or
volume. In the case of Edison's letterbooks, all of which contain a substantial number of marginally legible
documents, the problem is discussed in the target introducing the series.
Identification Numbers and Other Archival Inscriptions
Over the years the archivists responsible for the collection at the ENHS have used a variety of identifica-
tion systems for the documents. One of the earliest was the N-number, which was assigned to most of the
standard-size laboratory notebooks generated between 1878 and 1934. The six-digit number, prefixed by
the letter "N," corresponds to the first dated entry in the notebook. For example, a notebook whose first dated
entry is for November 9,1878, is classified as N-78-11 -09. A similar number, with the prefix "PN," identifies
each of Edison's pocket notebooks. Because published citations to the documents and existing finding aids
referto these numbers, each notebook and pocket notebook in the microfilm edition is also identified by its N-
or PN-number. The reader is cautioned, however, that this number is not always a reliable indicator of the
date when a book was first used. Many of the books were in use for a long period of time before any entry was
dated. Moreover, hundreds of books contain no date, and subsequent research indicates that many of the
archivally conjectured dates are erroneous.
Until 1971 the documents processed into the collection were often assigned a sequential accession
numberprefixedbytheletter"E."TheseE-numbers appear most often on notebooks, scrapbooks, and other
bound items, but they were also used occasionally for collections of unbound documents. After the National
Park Service assumed ownership of the collection in 1957, the archivists recataloged many of the docu-
17
Editorial Procedures
merits according to the NPS subject classification system and assigned sequential NPS catalog numbers to
them. Since this system is still being used at the ENHS, all documents with NPS catalog numbers are identi-
fied in the microfilm edition by that number. E-numbers are indicated only in cases of documents lacking any
other identifying number.
Until recently the archivists and curators at the Edison National Historical Site possessed no formal
training in the principles of archival management. Consequently, they did not consider it inappropriate to
record on the manuscripts their own observations about the people, events, and issues discussed in the
documents. These archival comments sometimes appear in the margins of the documents and, at other
times, within the text itself. Occasionally they are contained within brackets or parentheses, but more often
they appear without any distinguishing punctuation. Many of the longer and more discursive remarks are
followed by the initials "N.R.S." (Norman R. Speiden). In mosteases, a reader who is aware of this problem
can easily distinguish between these archival comments and the information originally contained in the
document.
18
A NOTE ON THE MICROFILMING
Reels 29-44 and reels 46-48 were filmed in the "A" or cine position. Reel 45 and reels 49-97 were
filmed in the "B" or comic position. The majority of documents were filmed at a reduction ratio of 14:1. When-
ever the ratio was increased in order to accommodate a group of oversize documents, a target noting the
altered ratio appears on the microfilm.
A small proportion of the microfilmed documents present problems in legibility due to faint pencil or ink,
bleedthrough, smearing, or staining. There are also a few tightly bound volumes in which the writing near the
inner margin is slightly distorted or partially obscured by the shadow from the facing page. In a few very large
volumes some of the print appears faint due to the reflection of the camera lights off the curvature of the
pages. The editors and publisher have made every technical effort to ensure optimum legibility for each
frame on the microfilm. The use of a high-quality microfilm reader with a large screen will minimize the need
for scanning oversize documents and will otherwise enhance the overall readability.

SERIES NOTES
NOTEBOOK SERIES, 1879-1886 (REELS 29-45)
MENLO PARK NOTEBOOKS, 1878-1882
The Menlo Park Notebooks cover the period 1878 to 1882. Some of the books also contain entries from
1883,1884, and 1885. These books are the principal sources for documenting the invention and develop-
ment of Edison's system of electric lighting and power. They also contain much material about the telephone,
as well as scattered entries detailing work on electric railways, batteries, ore separation, telegraphy, and
various other technologies. The books generated during thefirst year of work on the electric light are primarily
by Edison, Charles Batchelor, and Francis Upton. The names of other laboratory assistants frequently
appear as witnesses. As the staff of the laboratory expanded, many other individuals began making entries in
the notebooks. The Menlo Park notebooks are numbered from 1 to 249. Approximately 70 books are missing
from the set. An asterisk (*) next to a notebook number indicates that the book was not filmed. In such cases,
the reel and frame designation directs the researcher to an explanatory target.

Patents, 1872-1880
The one item filmed in this series is a volume containing printed copies of Edison's British patents for the
years 1872-1880. The patents relate to several inventions, including printing, automatic, and multiplex
telegraphs; the electricpen and autographic press; the telephone; electric lighting; and polyform. Many of the
specifications are accompanied by drawings.
Cat. 1321 (1872-1880) 92:3
Unbound Documents, 1871 -1905
The correspondence and other unbound documents relate primarily to Batchelor's work with Edison dur-
ing the period 1878-1898. Most of the material concerns Batchelor's activities during the 1880s as manager
of the Edison electric light interests in France (1881 -1884) and as manager of the Edison Machine Works
(1884-1888). Afew documents pertain to Batchelor's work as Edison's principal laboratory assistant and to
the operations of the Edison Phonograph Works. Important correspondents include Edison, Francis R.
Upton, Jay Gould, Henry Villard, and Cyrus W. Field. Included among the correspondence are a substantial
number of letters about the phonograph, which were sent to Edison in 1878. In addition to the correspon-
dence, there is a considerable amount of technical material, much of it in Edison's hand. Included also are
agreements by Edison for rights to his electric pen, phonograph, and telephone, along with additional
agreements concerning royalties owed to Batchelor for his assistance in developing these inventions; some
financial documents, mostly relating to Batchelor's personal finances; and a memoir by Batchelor, written
about 1905, regarding Edison's early work on incandescent lighting during the fall of 1878.

Scrapbooks, 1876-1893
The clippings and other items in these scrapbooks relate primarily to Edison and his inventions during the
years 1876-1893. Most of the clippings in the first book deal with Edison's telephone and phonograph. The
clippings in the remaining books relate primarily to Edison's work on electric lighting. There are also a few
clippings pertaining to other topics such as the opening of Edison's West Orange laboratory, his work on ore
milling, and the development of the improved phonograph. The last scrapbook contains letters and cables
from 1881 -1882 relating to the Paris Electrical Exhibition of 1881 and to electric lighting in Europe.

FRANCIS R. UPTON COLLECTION, 1878-1918
This collection contains the personal, laboratory, and business records of Francis R. Upton, who played a
major role in the development of Edison's incandescent lighting system. Among the earliest documents are
three notebooks. One was kept by Upton during the summer of 1878 while he was a student of Hermann von
Helmholtz. The others were used during the fall of 1878 while he was conducting a literature search for the
Edison Electric Light Company. The remainder of the collection consists of correspondence and other un-
bound documents. Upton's correspondence from the period 1878-1880, written primarily to members of his
family, is an invaluable source of information about the early stages of the incandescent lamp. The later
material deals primarily with the business of the Edison Lamp Company, of which Upton was general manag-
er. The post-1900 items include a note from Edison about the fire at the Edison Phonograph Works, Upton's
notes about Edison for a speech at the first Edison Pioneers' meeting in 1918, and a membership list of the
Pioneers.

INDEX TO AUTHORS AND RECIPIENTS
Categories of Documents Cited in This Index
This s a general index to correspondence and to most other types of documents in the microfilm edition.
The recipient of every letter written by Edison, the author of every letter written to him, and the authors and
recipients of all third-party correspondence are cited in this index. Citations to noncorrespondence appear
under the following categories:
Agreements and Contracts Letters of Recommendation
Articles Lists and Inventories
Bills and Receipts Lists of Stockholders
Bulletins Memoranda
Checks Minutes
Circulars and Brochures Mortgages
Cost Estimates Orders and Shippings Records
Deeds and Leases Patents, Applications, and Caveats
Diaries and Journals Petitions
Essays Powers of Attorney
Honorary Certificates Promissory Notes
Incorporation and Association Papers Reports and Statements
Instructional Material Resolutions
Insurance Policies Speeches and Addresses
Interviews Statutes and Ordinances
Legal Decisions and Opinions Stocks and Bonds
Legal Pleadings Stock Transfers
Legal Statements and Testimony Test Reports
Many of these categories are broadly construed. For example, the category "Patents, Applications, and
Caveats" includes not only formal applications and issued patents but also drafts of applications that may
never have been filed. The category "Agreements and Contracts" encompasses a wide variety of docu-
ments, including formal signed contracts and numerousotherdocuments involving contractual relationships
such as patent assignments. The category "Legal Pleadings" includes bills of complaint and answers in civil
litigation or patent office proceedings, while the category "Legal Statements and Testimony" includes affida-
vits, arguments, briefs, depositions, and other formal legal statements. A few categories are narrowly con-
strued . The category "Letters of Recommendation," for example, is used only in cases where the letter has no
designated recipient. The category "Speeches and Addresses" does not include papers presented before
professional societies that were subsequently published in newspapers or journals. Such items appear in the
index under the category "Articles."
It is not always possible to make clear distinctions between correspondence and other document types.
There are numerous orders, for example, that appear in the form of correspondence between Edison or his
representative and the supplier. Similarly, technical notes occasionally appear as correspondence between
Edison and one of his associates. In general, documents that contain all or most of the elements of corre-
spondence (addressee, salutation, complimentary close, and signature) appear in the index as correspon-
dence. Letters to the editor likewise are indexed as correspondence between the writer of the letter and the
newspaper or journal. Reports from company officials to the board of directors are treated as correspon-
dence between the official and the company.

CHRONOLOGICAL INDEX
TO TECHNICAL NOTES AND DRAWINGS
This index contains a chronological listing of dated entries in the laboratory notebooks and other dated
technical notes and drawings by Edison and his associates. Also included are references to technical materi-
al appearing as exhibits in court cases, as occasional entries in account books and letterbooks, and as items
pasted into the scrapbooks. For entries in the notebooks, the reel and frame designation refers to the page on
which the date appears (usually the first page of the note or drawing). In the case of contiguous entries of the
same date, the reel and frame designation generally refers only to the first note of that date.
Many of the notebooks were used to keep a daily record of life-tests for Edison's experimental lamps.
These books are generally cited in the index under the month that the tests were conducted. In cases where
the tests were conducted over a span of several months, each month is individually cited. The reel and frame
designation refers the reader to the target introducing the notebook.
Researchers should be aware that there is a considerable amount of undated technical material for the
years 1879-1886. For example, several hundred pages of unbound notes and drawings that were generat-
ed during this period appear without assigned dates on reel 45. There are also many notebooks that contain
no dated entries. In such cases, the book or folder is cited in the index under a conjectured year or (in
brackets) under a conjectured range of years. There are numerous other notebooks that contain only a few
dated entries. Many of these books were in use for a long period of time before the first dated entry was
recorded. For this reason, researchers are advised to use this index in conjunction with other finding aids
such as the series notes and the targets filmed at the beginning of each notebook.
It is not always possible to make clear distinctions between technical notes and other types of documents
such as test reports and draft patent applications. With a few exceptions, the entries in the laboratory note-
books, technical scrapbooks, and other volumes and folders in the Notebook Series are indexed as technical
notes and thus appear only in the Index to Technical Notes and Drawings. On the other hand, citations to
technical material outside the Notebook Series can frequently be found in the Index to Authors and Recipi-
ents under categories such as "Diaries and Journals," "Patents, Applications, and Caveats," and "Test
Reports." Citations to technical material can also be found in the listing of correspondence between Edison
and associates like Charles Batchelor and Francis R. Upton.

INDEX TO FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS
This is a finding aid to accounts, bills, receipts, and most other financial material. The majority of the docu-
ments cited in this index can be found either in the Account Series or in the Document File Series. However,
the index also includes references to the financial material that occasionally appears in the laboratory note-
books, letterbooks, scrapbooks, and other documents in the microfilm edition.
The following categories of financial material appear as main entries in this index:
Accounts Payroll and Time Records
Bills and Receipts Promissory Notes
Checks Stocks and Bonds
Orders and Shipping Records Stock Transfers
Under each main entry, the citations appear in chronological order by year. In most cases, the reel and frame
designation directs the researcher to the introductory target for the folder or volume.
Account books and otherfinancial documents that encompass a span of years are listed in this index under
the appropriate date range. For example, an account book beginning in May 1883 and continuing through
January 1884 would be cited once under the years 1883-1884 and would appear in the index after the
citations for 1883 and before the citations for 1884.
Many of the documents that are listed collectively in this index also appear individually in the Index to
Authors and Recipients. Thus, a bill to Edison from Edward H. Johnson, dated January 23,1879, would be
cited not only under the category Bills and Receipts in this index but also under the names of Johnson and
Edison in the Index to Authors and Recipients. Similarly, financial reports and financial statements that are
cited collectively as "Accounts" are also indexed individually as "Reports and Statements" underthe name of
the company or individual generating them. The researcher should also be aware that numerous references
to Edison's financial affairs and to the financial operations of his companies can be found in the letters ex-
changed between Edison and his business associates and in the annual reports and other documents issued
by the various Edison companies.
