Central Sprinkler Corporation (CPC, through its wholly owned subsidiary Central Sprinkler Company, is one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of automatic fire sprinkler systems and sprinkler components in the United States.
In December, 1977, CPC's President, Bill Meyer wrote to Fire Protection Engineer, Richard Patton congratulating him on his fire safety efforts. Meyer wrote:
"Dick, you must be silently proud that home fire protection, that you have talked about and dreamed about for so many years, is now becoming a reality. You have preached this format when many of your colleagues have said that you were eccentric. With all the problems in the world today, we feel that too few men have the courage to be eccentric."

Dear Dick:
Thank you for the information that you sent to us at Central regarding
your concept of sprinklers in the home. ‘The detailed breakdown of
‘cost was very encouraging. Dick, you mst feel silently proud that
home fire protection, which you have talked about and dreamed about
for so many years, is now becoming a reality. You have preached this
fomat when many of your colleagues have said that you were eccentric.
With all the problems in the world today, we feel that too few men
have the courage to be eccentric.
We are attaching a letter that we have written to Mr. Harry Shaw of
the NFPSCA. Of all the people that we have sent copies to, we would be
most appreciative of your comments or criticisms.
At this time, we would like to extend to you our best wishes for a Happy
Holiday Season and to eay that we are looking forvard to meeting with
you in California the early part of January.
Kind personal regards,
woud! J. Meyer

Dear Mr. Shaw:
The Residential Sprinkler Conference was exciting. Thank you for including us-
The work done to date by the agencies and outside firms was enlightening and
progressive. There is no question that a low-cost sprinkler system is obtainable.
We believe it is generally accepted that the primary purpose of a low-cost home
sprinkler system is.to save lives. The secondary purpose, although distant, is
to reduce property damage from both fire and water.
We feel that a system can be installed in a typical three-bedroom home for under
$400.00. (See Appendix #1.) We recommend a loop design for the domestic water
supply in new homes which will cover all water outlets, plus the sprinkler design.
If it 4s not looped, then the domestic pipe should be designed so there is an
outlet (such as shower, washer, toilet, etc.) beyond the most remote sprinklers.
‘This would eliminate any question of potability. We further recommend that the
sprinkler be a 145° quick-response pendent type with a 3/8" orifice and a
factor of approximately 2.65 with a "Censormatic" or "On-Off" feature. For more
economical use of piping, you may desire a sidewall type. Depending on where the
fire starts, you may sactifice sone sensitivity. This again may be obviated by
restricting the allowable coverage per sidewall sprinkler, but you have better
coverage and quicker extinguishment with overhead sprinklers.
Gost Estimate
Cost of sprinkler hardware - $110.00
Cost of extra pipe and fittings ~ 75.00
Total cost of material - 185.00
Cost of labor for installing sprinklers,
tees and additional piping _ 200.00
9385.00
Thie is the total extent of the system. Any additions or extensions to: this
system would add cost and would probably not save a single life and could
jeopardize the entire program.
