IntroductiontoColor
WhatCausesColor?
Colorinwateristheresultofdissolvedextractsfrommetalsinrocksandsoil,fromorganicmatterinsoilandplants,and
occasionallyfromindustrialbyproducts.Whencoloriscausedbymetals,itisusuallyduetoiron,copper,ormanganeseions
inthewater.Leavesandpeatmayaddtannin,glucosides,andtheirderivativestothewater,resultinginayelloworbrown
hue.Industriescanaddavarietyofchemicalswithvariouscolors.
Inwaterandwastewatertreatment,wemakeadistinctionbetweentruecolorandapparentcolor.Truecoloristheresultof
dissolvedorganics,minerals,orchemicalsinwater,asnotedabove.Whentestingthecolorofawatersample,thegoalisto
measurethetruecolorofthewater.However,suspendedmaterialsinthewater(turbidity)canchangetheapparentcolorof

Thevisualmethod
Whenusingthevisualmethod,colorisusuallymeasuredincolorunits.Waterwithcolorashighas20unitswillnotordinarily
