Lotsofideasshared!!Excitedtogetstartedonitall.WediscussedcreatingaTVstudioand

wesuggestedapplyingforagrantforipad&usinggooglehangoutsasawaytostreamittothe
classrooms.Lotsofdetailstofigureoutbuttheyputusinchargeastechnology
coaches/leaders.Wealsodiscussedtheadditionofagreenscreenforinterviewsand
spotlights.Wecanteachotherteachershowtousetheequipmentforvideoprojects.Weasked
for10-15minutesattheendofmonthlyStaffmeetingstosharetechnologyresourcesandtheysaid
theywouldtrybuteachmonthwouldbetrickywithalltheotherthingsincluded.Wedidsecurea

Reflection:
Wemettodaytotalkaboutwheretostartandhow.Wedecidedthatweshouldoffera
differentiatedsessionbecausesometeachersaremuchmoreskilledandexperiencedusingGoogle
Appsanddrive,like3-5whohavehadchromebooksfor2years.Ourplanistohaveteacherssplit
themselvesinto3groupsandeachofuswouldleadoneofthegroups:beginners,intermediate,and
expertusers.Beginnersaregoingtofocusonloggingin,accessinggoogledrive,gettingstaff
shared,sharingandreceivingdocs,andcreateadoc.Intermediateuserswillhaveaquickreviewof
allthedifferentgoogleappsandanopportunitytoaskquestionsorseekclarificationonteacher
andstudentuseof:docs,sheets,slides,anddrawing,Onceeveryoneiscaughtupwewillmoveinto
googleclassroomwhichwillbethefocusofthesession.Howtoaccessit,settingupaclass,
joiningaclass,postingassignments,anddiscussionofpossibleuses(likesmallgroupsand
intervention).Finally,expertuserswillhaveaquickreviewofallthingsGAFEtomakesurethey
knowhowtoaccess,use,andwaystoimproveteaching&learning,Thentheywillgointoavariety
ofdifferentedtechtoolsforengagement,instruction,andassessment:Voki,Padlet,Blendspace,
Symbaloo,PlickersandKahoot!.AllgroupswillberequiredtojoinourtechnologyPDGoogle
classroomtoaccesstheslideshow,andmakeacopyfortheirreferenceandfutureexplorationof
resources,aswellasaccesstheevaluationtobecompletedviagoogleformsbytheendofthe
week.

Reflection:
AllofoursessionswereFULLthroughoutthewholeweek!Justabouteverystaffmemberselected
tocometooursessions.Initialverbalfeedbackwaspositiveandexcited!Wehadrequestsfor
teacherstocomebacktogothroughthenextlevelofPD(intermediatewantedtocomebackfor
theexpertsession).WeremindedstafftousetheGoogleSlidesthattheycopiedandreferenceall
ofthoseresourcesandinstructionsatanytime.Wealsotoldthemtheirwouldbemoreedtech
toolssharedthroughouttheyear.

Reflection:Mostpeoplefallinoneof2categories,verynewtogoogle(1)orinthemiddle.Itis
goingtobechallengingtoaddressandmeettheneedsofthewiderangeofexperienceamongst
ourstaff.Mosteveryonewascomfortableusingtheinternetforleisurebutlesshadmorecomfort
withsearchingforeducationalresources.Itseemsthatpeoplewanttechtoolstouseimmediately
intheirclasseswhichisalargefocusofourinternship.Thelargestpercentageofteachersuse
technologytoteachwholegroup,likeaprometheanboardtopresentinformationinsomeway.
Only20%useitforassessmentinsomewayandonly19%useittoteachinsmallgroupsand20%
havestudentsuseitduringindependentcentertime.Thiswillgiveus3areastofocusonfored
techtools:differentiatedinstruction,assessment,anddevelopingindependentusersandcreators
oftechnologyandsupportingesol.Thisisconfirmedbythequestionthataskedaboutwhatways
theywantedtolearnabouttechnologyuse.Theconcernswemustkeepinmindfocusarounda
fewthemes:computerandtechnologymanagement/monitorstudentuse;Quick,easytouse,
immediatecreation/implementationwithoutalargetimecommitmentfromthem(i.e.hastobe
practicalnotjustonemorethingtodo);indactivitiesappropriate;basictechskills;equityand
accesstochromebooks/computers/laptopsespeciallyinyoungergrades;andbalancingtimelimits
toensurestudentsreceiveface-to-faceinteractionsaswell.Allparticipantsagreethat
technologycanhelpteachbetterandalmosteveryone(98%)agreeitcanhelpstudentslearn
better.Bothofthesequestionsareimportantbecauseitshowsupthatmostallofourstaffare
opentolearningnewwaysandresourcestousetechnologyandarewillingtoadapttosome
changes.

Reflection-wehavetomakeahugemodificationtoourplan-insteadofmonthlystaffmeetings
techspotlightwehavestaffbulletinweeklytechtip(Seelist).Itisfrustratingthatwearenot
abletogetanytimeinfrontofthestaffbecauseofalltheTitleIandMCPStrainingswehavetodo.
Hopefullyteachersarereadingthebulletinandusingthetoolswesuggest!Weshould&willtry
ourbesttoalignthemwiththetrainingtheywantedfromourpre-service.Weshouldalsoaskfor

orknowtheirlogins.Wereachedouttodoaone-on-onesessiontohelpherdotheworkto
createandsetupasystemforsomebasicusetostartherout.Weshowedherhowtogetthe
studentslogincardsandgavesomesuggestions,weshowedherhowtoaccessourstaffshared
driveandother4thgradedrivesformoreresources.Shedidntrealizethatshewasreallymissing
outonalotofgoodinformationandresourcesfromherteammatesandotherteachersinthe
county.Wehadhersetupagoogleclassroomanddecidedafterspeakingwithherthatthebest
waytostartisjusthavingthekidsusethemforameaningfulandengagingcenterinmath.We
helpedhercreateasymbalooofsomemathwebsitesandshowedherhowtopostitandsharethe
classroomwithherstudents.Wealsoremindedherthatwewereabletohelpagaininthefuture.

REflection-VERYEXCITED!Westayedafterschooltosetupthegreenscreenandpracticeusingthe
app.Wequicklyrealizedthatgooglehangoutswouldnotworkaswehadintendedandwewere
stuck.Howwillwegetthevideostotheteacherstoshowtheirclasses?Wediscussedoptionsand
reachedouttooneofourprofessors,Natalie,forsomeadvice.Wedecidedthatitwasnot
importantfortheannouncementstobeliveandthatpre-recordedwouldactuallybenefitusand
ourstudentsmore.Wemetwithadmintogooverournewplan.Wewillhavethe4thgraders
comeatrecessandfilmtheannouncementsforthenextday.Wewillcreateathevideoandpost
ittothegoogleclassroomssothatby9:20theyarereadytoview.Thereweretoomany
technologicalsetbackstolive-1.Howdowedoit?Ifteachersorstudentsarelate,whichtheyare,
theymisstheannouncements.2.Studentsarrivelate,itreallylimitsthenumberofstudentswho
canactuallyrecordtheannouncementstoabout10studentsthatarrivetoschoolearlytohelp

themtobeviewableattheannouncementstime(9:20).Wealsodecidedthatsinceitisalotof
reading,andreadingfromateleprompterthatweshouldletstudentsreallypracticeanddoitfor
anentireweek(m-f)beforepickingnewkids.Wealsodiscussedwaystogetstafftrainedtoaccess
thegoogleclassroomandviewthevideos.Wewereunabletosecureenoughtimeata
face-to-facestaffmeeting(originalplan)sowemadeascreencastforteacherstowatchand
follow.Wealsocreated&sharedasystemforhowtoaccessannouncementswhenthereisa
substitute.Weareexcitedaboutourplanandalreadyhaveonespotlightbooked,wellness
wednesdaywithourpedepartment.AfterourannouncementswewillattachavideoFOrstudents

Reflection-Technologycoachesdecidedtohousethecurriculumonaweeblywebsitethatwould

Reflection:Itwasveryvalidatingtohavetheprincipalaskforhelpandbeabletoshareour
knowledgefromtheprogram.Shewasveryappreciativeoftheextrahelpandforthetimewegave
intheone-on-onesession.Wesharedsomevideotutorialsforgooglesheetsanddocsforherto
viewperherrequestforadditionalsupport.

Reflection:Accordingtooursurveyresultswehadasuccessfulyearlonginternshipofshowing
ourstaffwaystoincorporatetechnologyandhelpingthemdevelopskillsandbecomemore
comfortableusingedTechtoolsandGoogle.Almostallsurveyparticipants(55)reportedthattheir
skillsandcomfortlevelwithgooglehaveincreased-almosthalfreportedthattheywerenow
strongusersofGAFEand80%reportgettingbetterandmorecomfortablewithusingtechnology
andgoogleappsintheirclassrooms.Almosthalfofparticipantsthoughtthetechnologytipof
weekwasatleastsomewhat-veryhelpful.Itisabigdiscouragingthat20%reportedwhatisthe
techtipoftheweek?Thiscouldbebecausetheydontreadthestaffbulletinandcouldhavebeen
avoidedifwehadtheopportunitytodoface-to-facePDsessionsasweoriginallyplanned.Getting
stafftoreadthingslikethebulletinandemailisnotpartofourresponsibilityandbecausetheir
waslittletonoaccountabilityimnotsurehowweaddressthis.Itwouldhavebeenhelpfulto
knowinthebeginningthatwewerentgettingfacetimeandwecouldhavetoldthestafftolook
foritatourpre-serviceweeksessionwhentheywereface-to-face,engagedandexcitedbutoh
well.Wehadsimilarresultswiththehhestechnologycurriculum.Alittlemorethan20%didnt
knowaboutit.Thiscouldbebecausetheirgradelevelcommitteerepsdidnotsharethe
informationatalloreffectively,ortheymisseditwitheverythingelsegoingon,and/orthey
wouldntknowwhatitisiftheywerentonagradelevelteamforexamplespecialistslikepe,art,
specialed,interventionteachers,etcwhoarentnecessarilyonteamsforupdates.Wehopethat
ifwestartthisinthebeginningofhteyearandstartatpre-serviceweekthatwewillhavemore
engagementanduseofthewebsiteandcurriculum.Overallalmost20%useitdailyorweekly
whichisagreatplacetostart!Fromthecommentsitseemsthatpeoplestillwanttolearnarange
ofthingssomefallunderIT/prometheanboardskills(inwhichtheycantakeclassestolearnmore
aboutthat),moreaboutgoogledocsandotherapps,managingandgettingchromebooks,class
websites,monitoringstudentprogress,moretimetoteachtechnologyasinasetschedule.One
commentreallystoodouttomethatconfirmedourfrustrationwithusingthebulletinasameans
togetinformationout.Thepersonsaid,Thebulletinisagoodtooltousetoshareinformation,
butnotteachpeoplehowtousethings.Ithinkthatdemonstrating,justlikewedoforstudentsis
muchmoreeffective.Icouldntagreemore.Ithinkitprovesthateventhoughwehada
successfulinternshipinmyopinion,ourworkisfarfromover.Wearejustataverygoodstarting
point.Itisevidentthatourstaffwantsmoreandournextjobwillbetofigureoutandplanfor
nextsteps.Thissummerweplantoshareourresultswithouradministrationtobrainstormsome
moreeffectivewaysandpossibleoptionstogetmoreandbettertrainingintechnologyuseand
techtoolstoourteacherstoimproveteachingandlearning.Whatthatwilllooklike,unknown,
butoneideaihadistodevelopaseriesofscreencastsonthetoolsthatwereinthebulletinthat
staffandwatchlikeaflippedclassroom.Wecanfocusononeeachmonthanduploadthemtoour
googleclassroom.Thisprobablywouldhavebeenwellservedthispastyear;hoewever,weruninto
thesameproblemofpeoplewhodontreadthebulletin,howwillwegetthemtologinandwatch?
Itisobviouslynotaquickfixanswerbutsomethingthatwewillhavetogrowanddevelopinthe
upcomingschoolyears.Asourstaffchangesallthetimesowillourefforts.
