The Traditional and Modern Concept of a School Principal (ADMINISTRATION & SUPERVISION FOR PHILIPPINE
SCHOOLS MACARIO NAVAL GAUDENCIO V.AQUINO)
A traditional Principal or Supervisor does not tell teachers how to do their jobs,Instead, he works with them in the
study and analysis of the instructional situation.
Require the blind adoptation of techniques. Encourages teacher initiative and works for basic understanding of
workable principles which teachers can use according to their needs.
Traditional administrators are authoritarian in nature. The dignity and worth of the individual were not given
importance. Group processes were seldom, if ever used.
Modern administrators, on the other hand, puts a premium on personal worth, as well as the uniqueness of the
individual.
In the traditional way, The School Administrator worked on the basis of hunches or guesswork. Little use was
made of research and objective data as basis for scientific thinking and action.
Modern administrators, makes adequate use of research findings objective data on which to base the decisions.
Development on the roles of the school principal has come about as the result of the increasing demands of the
society, the school, the expansion of educational services and the constant increase in knowledge in the various areas
of human endeavor.
Other Perspective of Modern School Principal (Dr. Hollis P. Allen, former FOA Professor, CoED,UP)
According to him, modern administrators (Principals) engaged on the following actions:
Prefer group decisions on important matter. Makes decision with prior consultation with the representative sample
of those who are affected by the decisions.
Systematically delegates responsibilities.
Senses problems before they arise and avoid crisis by effective group planning.
Conceives planning as one of his important job.
Actions speaks louder than words.
Associates with staff and community, with respect on the basis of equality as a person.
Encourages new ideas and initiative among his constituents.
Realizes and admits, in this day of complexity and specialization in school administration, that he may not know all
the answers, and acts accordingly.
Helps individuals to become more effective leaders.
Makes continuous evaluation, admits weaknesses and places which need strengthening. Puts his staff to work on
analysis and remediation.
Devotes himself preparing and opening channels for improvement.
Willing to work as long and as hard on the job as do members of his staff.
Does his best to give fair and equal treatment to all.
Is willing to give friendly help to staff in a self-sufficient manner.
Budget matters discussed broadly and decided in terms of the best interests of children and parents.
Credit for his staff.
Develops written operating policy and objectives.
In our Educational System the Division Superintendents and District Supervisor give more attention to
administration while Division and Subject Supervisors attend more to Supervision. The Principal on the other hand,
attends both.
