1. SCOPE
1.1 This specification provides reference information for round (Rd) electric resistance welded, drawn
over mandrel (DOM) carbon steel tube for use as mechanical tubing. DOM tubing is formed from hot
rolled or cold rolled strip and electric resistance welded. It is then normalized, and cold drawn through a
die and over a mandrel to provide O.D. and I.D. size control and concentricity. This specification is
intended to replace the Former CNH Company Material Specifications listed in Table 3 and should be
used on all applicable new and updated drawings.
1.2 Annex A, Table A1 in this specification provides mechanical properties for engineering guidance
for DOM carbon steel tubes in the stress relieved and annealed heat treat conditions, see section 4.2.
1.3 All National Standards and related test method designations are to be latest issue unless
otherwise specified.
2. APPLICATIONS
2.1 DOM tubing is intended to be used for applications that require the best size control of hollow
steel products with excellent O.D. and I.D concentricity. Normalizing and cold drawing over a mandrel
results in all flash removal and makes DOM a uniform and precision product.
3. GRADES
3.2.1 Applicable National Standards for CNH DOM tubing grades are listed in Table 2, additional
material references and information is provided in MAT1007D. In general, it is permissible to produce a
part from any of these comparable National Standard grades for a corresponding CNH Grade when no
special strength or composition requirements are specified. CNH Grade A may therefore be produced
from ASTM A513 Grade 1020 or DIN 2393-2 Grade RSt 37-2 BK.
No heat treatment of tubing is required unless otherwise specified. Special heat treatments are; stress
relieved, annealed, or normalized. DOM carbon steel tubes are heat treated to alter the mechanical
properties for subsequent operations such as forming and others. Annealing is done when DOM carbon
steel tubes require extensive forming; while stress relieving can assist certain degree of forming and may
be beneficial for highly stressed parts. Consult applicable National Standards for additional information
and review associated cost factors and availability with suppliers before specifying on drawings.
4. RELATED SPECIFICATIONS
5. REQUIREMENTS
CNH tubing Grades shall meet all requirements of the applicable National Standard and any special
requirements specified on the engineering drawing.
5.2.1 Tubing shall conform to the permissible variations in dimensions specified in the designated
National Standard. For special shape tubing or tubing outside standard size ranges the tubing supplied
shall conform to the dimensions specified on the drawing.
5.2.2 For drawn over mandrel (DOM) tubing specify O.D. and I.D., or O.D. and wall thickness for
dimensional control.
6. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
6.1 Optional conditions listed in National Standards may be applied as special requirements (SPCL).
These requirements shall be indicated on the engineering drawing and apply to both the CNH grade and
National Standard specified.
All tubing material supplied to this specification shall be equivalent in every respect to samples approved
by the purchasing CNH location. While the purchasing location may test samples from incoming
shipments for quality assurance, the supplier is responsible for ensuring that shipments meet the stated
requirements without depending upon the purchasers inspection.
8.2 The title block of engineering drawings shall contain material designations as described in CNH
MAT1003 (86979049) Metallic Material Designations on Engineering Drawings. The following are
examples of material designations for cold rolled sheet on drawings:
9. DESIGN PROPERTIES
9.1 DOM tubing National Standard materials referenced for application under the CNH Grades are
grouped together in Table 4 based on comparable mechanical properties and provide information for
engineering guidance.
9.2 CNH Engineering must consider the differences in dimensional tolerances and properties of
referenced National Standard tube materials to assure functionality, reliability, and serviceability of a part
when manufactured in different parts of the world. In applications where these differences can not be
compensated for in the design, the material may be restricted to the originally specified local material as
described in CNH MAT1003 (86979049) Metallic Material Designations on Engineering Drawings.

(1) Compared to welded and as-drawn DOM tube properties in Table 4, Stress Relieved (SR) heat treated DOM tubes show a
drop of 10-15% in tensile strength and yield strength with a significant increase in elongation; while Annealed heat treated
DOM tubes show even further reduction (about 30-60%) in strength values with higher increase in elongation values.
(2) ASTM values are provided for engineering guidance. If tubing must conform to these values they must be specified on the
Engineering drawing.
(3) Indicates condition or property values are not provided for specified heat treat conditions in the referenced specification.
Properties may be negotiated between buyer and supplier. If particular mechanical properties for heat treat conditions are
required it shall be specified on the drawing.
(4) Yield strength values are not available in corresponding standards. These standards recommend that yield strength values
may be calculated as approximately 50% of tensile strength for this type of material and heat treat. Consult with suppliers
as necessary.
