CASE 20: The B and G Manufacturing Company

1. Place yourself in the position of the personnel director in the situation. Which of
the following courses of action would you have chosen in consideration of the
information which he had available at the time of the decision?
a. Would you have discharge both men?
b. Would you have discharged Jim White only?
c. Would you have discharged Pete Boynton only?
d. Would you have discharged neither of them?

Justify your choice of decision.

Incidents of dishonesty and misconduct cannot be avoided inside the

company. Employees should be aware of what they will do anytime and anywhere.
In this incident, Jim White and Pete Boynton should be given sanctions in line to
what violation they had. If I will discharge both of them, it will lead to possible loss
of a customer dissatisfaction within the employee group, and in the time and
money that would be involved in recruiting and training replacements. Imposing
proper judgment should be given to avoid the possible losses and problems that
will make everything chaotic. I will choose the Option D due to some
circumstances that may arise due to discharging both of the employees since its
their first offense and they have good records before the incident happened.
Maybe the company wasnt really strict at implementing their rules and regulations,
and have no written documents that will state at whatever disciplinary action will
be given to those employees who made offenses. Jim White and Pete Boynton will
be given a warning and a penalty of their actions. Penalty given may be in a form
of suspension or stern reprimand. The said warning and penalty should be served
as a lesson not just to the two employees but also for all members in the company.
After this, the company should conduct a seminar or training to all the applicants
and workers (direct or indirect workers) in the company about such incident to
avoid it from happening again. It would also be better if a handbook will be made
wherein all the rules and regulations in the company will be recorded. The offenses
will be classified according to its type and level so that different disciplinary actions
will also be made in accordance that the offense merits. If these plans will be
implemented, incidents like this and other types of offenses that an employee can
do will be avoided and course of action will be easily decided.

2. What policy and procedure changes would you recommend for the handling of
future cases of this type?

If I am going to handle future cases like this type, the policy and procedure
changes that I can recommend are always remind the employees and everyone in
the company to think a hundred times before making a decision and be considerate
to whatever course of action I will decide because in the end I may regret it; and
provide a security officer near the punch card system so that offenses in this case
may be avoided or change the punch card system into a Biometric Fingerprint
Attendance Clocking System wherein the thumbprints of each employees are used
to register their attendance. We have different types of thumbprints so its very
difficult to cheat or log-in your co-workers attendance. In this way, aiding and
abetting an act of dishonesty and misconduct will be avoided by all the employees.
