Example 1
An exam coordinator sampled 20 professors and recorded the number of days
that each one needed to submit his or her exam grades. The results are
10 6 5 2 6 4 9 13 10 12 7 4 9 13 15 8 11 12 4 0
a. Compute the mean, median, and mode.
b. Briefly describe what each statistic tells you.

Median = 8.5
Mode = 4
b. The mean number of days to submit grades is 8 days, the median is 8.5 days
(Half the group took less than 8.5 days to submit their grades), and the mode is
4 days (the biggest number of professors in the group took 4 days to submit
their grades).
Example 2
The following table shows the number of dollar bills for 20 randomly selected
customers.
Solution
The modal class is the class with the highest frequency which is the
class 10-12
Example 3
In a frequency distribution of 250 scores, the mean is reported as 78
and the median as 65. Determine the shape of this distribution?
Solution
The shape of the distribution is positively skewed. In a positively
skewed distribution the mean is greater than the median, while in a
negatively skewed distribution the mean is less than the median, and
in a symmetrical distribution the mean is equal to the median.
Example 4
You are given the following frequency distribution table for a certain
sample
Solution:
x
x i
2(1) 3(2) 4(3) 20

Example 5
The number of sick days due to colds and flu last year was recorded
by a sample of 15 adults. The data are.
8 3 9 5 6 15 3 0 7 5
12 0 2 5 10
Compute mean, median, mode and range.
Solution
