On Culture and Education Sectors.

Participants from the different CAR-SUCs during the first


regional symposium on education and socio-cultural sectors held recently at the CHED-CAR,
Conference Hall, La Trinidad, Benguet on their final pose as they reap their successes.

The first regional symposium on education and socio-cultural sectors was held last October 27-

28, 2015 at the CHED-CAR, Conference Hall, La Trinidad, Benguet.

This first regional symposium on education and socio cultural research is an achievement for

Highland Agricultural Resources Research and Development Consortium (HARRDEC) and the

Commission on Higher Education-Cordillera Administrative Region (CHED-CAR) , said Dr.

Mariano Marchan Jr.


Several mechanics of presentation and the criteria for evaluation both in the oral presentation and

poster competition were observed as discussed by Dr. Carlito Laurean, BSU Vice President for

Research and Extension and the Deputy Director, HARRDEC. He also expressed his gratitude to

the group for the 15 years of sustained partnership.

There were 29 papers and 12 posters in the socio-cultural the education sectors presented and

evaluated during the 2-day activity.

Winners of poster in the field of education were Kalinga-Apayao State College (KASC)

garnering the best poster award with its title, Indigenizing the Curriculum: Splicing Ethnic

Games into Physical Education, followed Apayao State College (ASC) bagging the 1 st and 2nd

runner-up awards with their titles: Indigenous Mathematical Concept-Isnag at Calanasan

Apayao, and; Teaching Isnag Folk Tales using Stop-Motion Animation respectively.

For the posters in socio-cultural, the best poster was exhibited by Benguet State University with

their entry titled Influences of Communication Strategies Employed by Pesticide Companies on

Attitudes and Practice of Benguet Farmers. Consistently, ASC again landed 2 nd with their entry

titled Documentation of the Indigenous Musical Instruments of the Iyapayaos while Abra State

Institute of Sciences and Technology (ASIST) with their entry titled Sangasang: The Way of

Life of the Ilocanos.

In the oral paper presentation in education, again ASC got the best paper and 1 st runner-up award

with titles: Development, Validation and Summative Evaluation of Card Pairing Games for
Selected Topics in Math 8, and; Validating Teacher Education Achievement Test respectively

followed by KASC with their title: Language Function Analysis in the Speech Acts Among

KASC Teachers.

Meantime, in the oral presentation in socio-cultural sector, Benguet State University(BSU) won

the best paper and first runner up award with their titles: Toknang Humor that Bites: Reading

through the Subculture of Young Farmers in Mt. Trail, and; Ten year Assessment (Summing-

up) of the Research and Extension Program of BSU; Horticulture respectively. BSU also tied up

with Mt. Province State Polytechnic College (MPSPC) in the 2 nd runner up award with their

papers: Trinidad Agricultural School 1917-1941, and Exploring Poet Khensays Literary

Contributions to the Bontoc Community.

These are among the bold initiatives of the region as far as the academe is concerned in relation

to the restoration and promotion of culture and education through research-based interventions.

Soon in December, the Cordillera Administrative Region Association of State Universities and

Colleges (CARASUC) in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) will

conduct a first National Summit on Academe-Industry Linkage for Coffee, also in Benguet.
