Rutledge on leadership, which
engaged the class in a lively
discussion on just what makes
a good leader. The day con-
cluded with a tour of the sta-
dium.

and the Texas Dragon Boat
Association are excited to announce a
new outdoor event Cleburne Dragon
Boat Festival.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to
4 p.m. July 29-30 at Lake Pat Cleburne.
This family-fun event is free to the public
and offers races, food trucks, vendors,
entertainment and more.
We know you are asking yourself what
is a dragon boat? A dragon boat is a 20
person, 500-pound racing canoe with a
steersman and a drummer. The drummer
drums to the beat as the 20 paddlers
race down Lake Pat Cleburne ranging
from 300m to 500m in a traditional Hong
Kong style Buk Dragon Boat.
The Texas Dragon Boat Association
will teach you how to dragon boat in less
than fifteen minutes and will also provide
the dragon boat, paddles and life jack-
ets. In addition to dragon boat, stand-up
paddleboard races will be held on July
30 with 5K and 10K races.

MEET YOUR AMBASSADORS
Marianne Lanman
M
arianne Lanman, is a born and raised
Cleburnite, and has lived here most of her
life. Her parents were also born in
Cleburne and Marianne was taught to believe that
if Cleburne was not the center of the universe, then
surely all roads lead here.
Marianne graduated from Cleburne High
School in 1989 and graduated from Texas A&M
Unversity at Commerce in 1993 with a degree in
marketing. Her first job out of college was in
Houston working as a sales rep for Kirklands
Department store. She gained valuable experience
calling on various types of gift shops and espe-
cially enjoyed assisting the volunteers in the hospi-
tal gift shops.
Later she went to work for Dillards in the man-
agement training program. However, an opportu-
nity became available for her to return to home-
town Cleburne.
Since her parents and both maternal and pater-
nal grandparents had been in business in Cleburne

for many years, it seemed only natural for Marianne
to return home and purchase a Farmers Insurance
Agency from her grandfather, Jim Tanner. She
was an agent from 1995 until 2016. Marianne
had the opportunity to sell her agency to
Dennis Mark when he offered to purchase all
three well established agencies in Cleburne.
Marianne now is employed by Mr. Mark
and enjoys serving her long time customers as
well as cultivating new customers.

Donna Anderson
Donna Anderson is a native of Texas who has a love for
her community.
She is married and has three beautiful children.
I love the people of Johnson County, Anderson said.
My job as the admissions coordinator at Ridgeview
Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing allows me to get to
know so many families.
Anderson am a volunteer for Court Appointed Special
Advocates of Johnson County where she gets the oppor-
tunity to serve children in the foster program in Johnson
County.
I am a member of First Baptist Church of Grandview,
where I serve on a welcome team, she said. Im blessed
to be part of such a great community.

A look at Cleburne Economic Development

S
everal of Cleburnes eco-
nomic indicators are on
the positive side this
month. Sales and Use Tax col-
lections remain above the 2016
levels and unemployment in
Cleburne and Johnson County
continues to be lower than last
year.
According to the Texas
State Comptrollers Office,
Cleburne should receive
$902,298 for its 2 percent local
sales and use tax rate in June
compared to $841,305 last
June. year-to-date as of June,
local collections using the
Cleburne 2 percent sales and
use tax rate, collections have
been $5,633,951 so far, this
year.
The Texas Workforce
Commission reports unem-
ployment in Cleburne for May,
2017 was at 4.3 percent while
the unemployment in Johnson
County was even lower at 3.9
percent. The number of work-
ers in the local workforce
remains constant with 13,466
in the Cleburne workforce and
76,782 in the Johnson County
workforce.
The city of Cleburne opened
and dedicated The Depot,
home of the Cleburne
Railroaders on May 18. It is
near U.S. 67 at North Nolan
River Road. It is a beautiful
facility and attendance has
been good for the seasons
opening games.
The Railroaders have been
winning and are in second
place in their league. Season
tickets sales have been suc-
cessful. The Cleburne Yellow
Jackets played in the new ball-
park for one of their recent
playoff games. The Yellow
Jackets had a successful sea-
son by advancing well in to the
district and region playoffs.

issued in May. This brings the
year-to-date total through May
to 39 new residences. The esti-
mated property tax value of
the 39 new units is $5,507,296.
There were two significant
commercial permits issued in
May. One was the new medical
facility being constructed for
Dr. Arouse and Dr. Alazar on
the west side of North Nolan
River Road at Harlan Drive,
across from Cleburne High
School.
The other commercial per-
mit was for the new Advance
Auto Parts facility at W.
Henderson St. at Chambers St.

Sixty-seven certificates of
occupancy have been issued
so far in 2017, with 10 being
issued in May. Certificates of

Cleburne ISD enrollment for
all grade levels was 6,650 at
the end of the 2017 school
year, according to CISDs
enrollment report. This repre-
sents and an increase of 12
additional students compared
to the 6,638 for the same peri-
od in 2016.
Cleburne ISD has complet-
ed some of the CISD $130 mil-
lion bond work at Coleman
and Cooke elementary schools
and are seeking bids on more
of the bond fund project now.
A groundbreaking was held
on May 6 for the proposed new
Cleburne High School in front
of the existing high school on
North Nolan River Road. These
CISD 2017 bond improvement
projects were approved by
Cleburne ISD voters in May
2016 as part of the $130,550
CISD School Bond Election.
Sales of single family resi-
dential units continues to
remain strong. The Johnson
County Association of Realtors
reported 58 sales in Cleburne
last month compared to 49
during the same month in
2016.

In Johnson County, there
were 265 sales last month com-

pared to 207 during the same
month last year. Listings on
available units to sell in the
area are in short supply accord-
ing to area realtors.
Update on various Cleburne
Projects which include the fol-
lowing;
zx La Moderna Pasta Co. at
1929 Sparks Drive is now pro-
jected to begin operation in
September. Most of the equip-
ment has now been installed
and finish work is now under-
way. About half of the staffing
has been hired. It will be a new
160,000-square-foot manufac-
turing facility that will employ
about 90 to 100 workers.
zx Advance Auto Parts has
commenced construction of a
new facility at West Henderson
Street at Chambers Street and
should be open in late summer.
zx Johnson County Farm
Bureau Insurance is underway
with construction of their new
offices at West Henderson
Street at Meadowview Drive.
The parking area and founda-
tion have been poured and the
building was recently fully
enclosed. Interior finish work is

zx In the public sector, contractors
continue to work on the Texas
Department of Transportations proj-
ect of the widening of U.S. 67 to four
traffic lanes between Cleburne and
Keene. The new bridge beams over
North Main Street have been installed.
New exit ramps are being poured.
TxDOT recently updated the comple-
tion forecast by saying it will be fin-
ished before the end of the year.
zx Johnson Countys $22 million jail
expansion project is now open and
taking prisoners. SEDALCo of Forth
Worth was the contractor that con-
structed it. Commissioners Court
approved $7 million of added funding
to renovate the older part of the
county jail. That work is underway
now.
zx New Era Partners is continuing to
pursue new retail, restaurants, com-
mercial office use along with a hotel
facility for the new Cleburne Station
Project located next to the newly-
opened The Depot. New Era Partners
and their retail specialist, Retail
Connections, are recruiting these new
restaurants, entertainment venues,
retail and commercial business for that
project.
zx The city of Cleburnes contractor
is nearing completion on street work
on Nolan River Road and Westhill
Drive. The last segment of Nolan River
Road was laid recently, as well as part
of Westhill to Buffalo Creek. Also,
Westhill Construction was recently
awarded a contract to construct new
sidewalks along Colonial Drive and
Nolan River Road. Work is scheduled
to begin soon.

these newly constructed homes.
Streets, underground electrical supply
and city utilities have all been installed.
Several more are in the pouring of
concrete foundation stage.
zx Belle Lagos Development, Phase
I at the west end of Westhill Drive, is
under construction. Installation of
sewer and other utilities are underway.
The new streets will follow. There will
be 58 lots in Phase I. Work started in
2016 but stopped for a while before
recently restarting with the work.
zx Babbitt Homes is constructing
several new single family residential
units on North Hyde Park Boulevard.
Ralph Littlejohn Construction just
completed a new home on Westhill
Drive and Sharp Image Homes, Garza
Group and others are under construc-
tion on Hawthorne Street in the
Winchester Addition located just off
South Nolan River Rd. and in Berkeley
Heights Addition in Cleburne. Mark
Sims Building is currently constructing
a couple of new residential units in his
Cross Creek Estates, Phase I subdivi-
sion. Lastly, Rhodes Construction has
constructed another new duplex unit
in his new Stone Gate Park Addition
located off of South Hyde Park Blvd.
Hopefully, this information will
inform you of some of the activity in
our community and will be useful to

and investment to Cleburne and area.
They are investing millions of dollars in
our community that will improve the

Cleburne Economic
Development news
for June 2017
My areas of specialization related to
Cleburnes economic development are
focused on retail, residential and commer-
cial economic development projects.
Cleburne is experiencing a residential
building boom the likes of which we have
not seen in many years. Also of note,
Cleburne now has a nationally-known
home builder, D.R. Horton Homes, who is
actively building out the Cross Creek
Estates Phase II subdivision. Upon comple-
tion, that development will entail 68 new
homes with a starting price point of about
$190,000. There are currently 15 homes
under construction and several more lots
sold in that subdivision.
Raintree Homes is about to begin
another phase in Belle Meadows, which
will initially comprise 35 lots, with many
more upon complete buildout. The Belle
Lagos development is under construction
again after several delays. We are expect-
ing progress to pick up considerably in that
subdivision. The first phase will consist of
51 lots. Additionally, there is good builder
activity underway on individual lots around
Cleburne. We are also seeing considerable
activity regarding potential sale of several
large land tracts for new residential devel-
opment.
One of our main priorities is the revital-
ization of our historic downtown area. We
have a faade improvement grant program
in place that any downtown business
owner can take advantage of. In addition,
we are going through the process of get-
ting Historic Downtown Cleburne listed on
the National Register of Historic Places, as
well as with the Texas Historic Commission.
What this will mean to downtown business
owners in the district is substantial tax
breaks on renovation projects.
With the recent passage of the $130
million school bond, we are starting to see
significantly increased interest from devel-
opers and real estate brokers, many of
whom are from outside Cleburne. As things
continue to move forward, we expect to
see Cleburne reach a new pinnacle of
growth, which will spread the tax base and
contribute to our quality of life and eco-
nomic well-being.

Pre-construction prep underway at CHS

Preliminary work has begun
at Cleburne High School in
anticipation of new construc-
tion and renovation to the
campus, after a year of design
planning and development.
Despite the change of the
construction management
company, construction is on
track as scheduled for the new
building.
August 2019 is still the
targeted completion date, we
havent moved that,
Superintendent Kyle Heath
said. There are still some
unknowns with the magnitude
of this project, especially the
renovation of the existing
building. But we have only
one time to get this right, in
delivering the right project on
time and on budget.
Bids will be opening soon
for the project.
Corgan, the architects on
the project, has indicated con-
struction documents will be at
100 percent [completed] late
this week, Heath said.
Balfour Beatty, the projects
construction manager at risk,
plans to open bids on July 13.
Hundreds of bids are expect-
ed because of the scope of
the project, said Barry Hipp,
senior director of district oper-
ations.
It should take at least 10
days to quantify the bids, due
to the amount involved, Hipp
said. This will give us a good
idea as to how we rank for the
total amount of the project.
Corgan is expected to provide
trustees with an update at our
July 17 school board meet-
ing.
The initial timeline that has
been established has the dis-
trict receiving the guaranteed
maximum price on July 31.
The moving of dirt, signaling
the start of construction, will

the acceptance of the GMP by
trustees.
The week following the last
day of school saw CISD main-
tenance crews descend on the
high school to tackle the first
areas identified for renovation
or relocation. The CHS Lyceum
has been de-constructed in
preparation for its new use as
the practice room for the cheer
and dance programs.
Equipment in the girls and
boys weight rooms has been
relocated to the west end of
the indoor practice facility,
where it will remain until the
new school is opened. Locker
areas for softball and girls soc-
cer and track will be moved to
the current PE locker/dressing
rooms in the gym area.
The boys field houses and
the boys soccer/trainers build-
ing will be the first demolition
project to allow for the con-
struction of the baseball/soft-
ball complex. Everything from
the boys field houses equip-
ment, locker rooms and coach-
es offices will be moved to the
girls field house, including the
football lockers, which have
already been moved.
They will not be moved
again until the new building
opens, Hipp said. We are
doing these things now to
minimize disruption and the
need for additional moves as
construction progresses.
Construction of the soft-
ball/baseball complex is
among the first projects to be
addressed in order to meet
2018 season schedules. We
will also begin construction on
the parking lots on the east
side of the school in early fall.
While there was much cel-
ebration associated with the
groundbreaking ceremony for
the project, district leaders say
the moving of dirt is the first
true step toward a new high
school for Cleburne students.

leburne Citizens Police Academy
Alumni Association is pleased to
announce launch of the 2017
Cleburne Police Officer Trading Cards,
featuring Cleburne police officers and
not athletes.
The cards will look similar to collect-
ible baseball cards. The front of the
card is a photo of an officer and the
back will have fun information about
the officer.
The idea behind these trading cards
is to help our children become familiar
with the officers faces and understand
that police officers are friendly and
approachable. We also hope this will
help build trust between police and
our children.
Now, on the fun side of this, who-
ever collects all the trading cards will
be entered into a drawing for a bicy-
cle, helmet and pads.

Cards can be attached to a collector
sheet. The Collector Sheets are avail-
able at either the front office of the
Cleburne Police Department during
normal business hours, Monday
through Friday or the Cleburne H-E-B

n just over a year, the part-
nership between Hill College
in Johnson County and Texas
Tech University has shown
enough progress to hire an
academic advisor for the Hill
College campus.
Penny Morrison was hired in
June to serve Hill College stu-
dents and community mem-
bers that are interested in
obtaining a bachelors degree
from Texas Tech University.
Morrison has deep roots in
Cleburne and will begin devel-
oping relationships with local
businesses.
While Morrisons primary
role will be advising local Texas
Tech University students, she
will also be involved with
recruiting, advertising, and pro-
viding support to students that
may want to transfer to Lubbock
to complete their degree. In

The hope is that there will be

of 2018.
With the addition of
Morrison, Texas Tech University
at Hill College will have the
opportunity to reach more stu-
dents and provide more infor-
mation to community members
so that Texas Tech University
can expand with the growing
educational needs of Cleburne.

Kings Daughters seek help on North Texas Day of Giving
T
he Cleburne Kings Daughters is asking
for your help during the North Texas
Day of Giving on Sept. 14, an online
giving event for people around the nation to
come together to help nonprofit organiza-
tions raise money to help their cause.
Cleburne Kings Daughters are a Cleburne
based nonprofit that assists local families
and children in the Cleburne ISD area that
need help helping themselves. They work
closely with the school counselors to assist
those children and families that might not
otherwise get their basic needs such as
clothing, food, general hygiene supplies.
For children, they provide school supplies,
clothing, medication, eye glasses, field trip
opportunities with the school (that they may
miss due to costs), lice kits, school lunches,
CLETRAN passes and much more.
For families, they provide emergency
assistance when they have had a fire, are
starting a new job but need help until they
get their first paycheck, CLETRAN passes for
a specified amount of time, electric bills,
water bills, etc. Kings Daughters have even
kept families from being evicted. Assistance
with finding agencies that help with more
long term solutions is also something Kings
Daughters provides. Cleburne Kings
Daughters also involves the community with
actual events such as the Stuff the Bus in
August to provide school supplies to kids

throughout the year and a community wide
toy drive in December to make sure all kids
can have a blessed Christmas.
The organization operates with only vol-
unteers and all donations go to help the
families and children in the community. This
year, the Kings Daughters have a challenge
grant from a local company to help multiply
every dollar donated. There are three steps
to giving and helping the local organization
help so many children and families:
1. Wake up on Sept. 14.
2. Log on to your computer between 6
a.m. and midnight

Plaza Theatre Co. moving

The Liberty Event Center
will soon become Plaza Theatre
Co.s new home, which, at
more than 300 seats, will dou-
ble the current locations 158-
seat capacity.
Plaza officials announced
the impending move on
Monday night during the the-
aters 10th anniversary celebra-
tion held fittingly enough at
the Liberty Event Center.
The Liberty Event Center,
305 S. Anglin St., sits about
two blocks east of Plazas cur-
rent 111 S. Main St. locale.
The Dudley Family
Foundation established by
Cleburne businessman Howard
Dudley owns the Liberty Event
Center, which will soon be
renamed Plaza Theatre Co. at
Dudley Hall. In the interim,
upcoming Plaza shows will con-
tinue to stage at the theaters
South Main Street location.
The move has been in the
planning for some time, Plaza
Artistic Director JaceSon Barrus
said, but was only recently
finalized.
This new facility will seat
just over 300 while still main-
taining the intimate theater-in-
the-round feel that Plaza
patrons have come to expect
during the 10 year run of the
company, Barrus said. The
new location will also feature
expanded bathroom facilities,
enhanced lobby and conces-
sion areas, dedicated parking,
improved lighting and sound
and scenery abilities providing
better quality entertainment to
Plaza patrons.
From a one-off performance
at a miniature golf course a
decade ago, Plaza has grown
to encompass two facilities and
become one of the citys pre-
miere tourist draws.
Its hard to believe its been
10 years already, Plaza
Director of Operations Aaron
Siler said. I remember us bor-
rowing risers and chairs from
local churches to do that first
weekend performance at the
old Putt Putt near Hulen Park.
That was a makeshift deal but it
was a start and a lot of fun.
Then we moved across the
street from our current loca-
tion. That was a start but it was
still kind of makeshift and a lot
of people didnt think wed

make it, but people came.
When we got our current space
it was and is fantastic but we
quickly grew to capacity and
thats why our new home at
[Liberty Event Center] is much
needed and such a blessing.
Once the move is complete
Plaza fans should expect every-
thing they love about the the-
ater only more so, Siler said.
Were still going to have
the family friendly quality pro-
ductions Plaza patrons love
and expect and the intimate
in-the-round setting were
known for, Siler said. Its just
that were going to have more
seats and more room, which
means more seats for Cleburne
residents and for visitors to
town. Weve been fortunate to
have the support of patrons
from Cleburne and elsewhere
and, at this point, we simply
need more seats to meet
demand. Our current show,
Anne of Green Gables sold
its entire run out the first week
and thats becoming more and
more the norm.
In addition to the current
Plaza Theatre, the troupe also
operates Plaza Academy at 221
S. Mill St. The Academy offers
dance, acting and other artistic
endeavor classes to children
and teenagers. That facility will
continue operations at its cur-
rent location, Plaza Director of
Education Tina Barrus said.
Plazas South Main Street
location, Tina Barrus said, will
become home to Plaza Junior
after Plazas move to the Liberty
Event Center.
That brings more opportu-
nities for our young perform-
ers, Tina Barrus said. In past
years we did our children and
teen shows either [at Plazas
current location] or the
Cleburne Conference Center.
This will give them a perma-
nent home and will allow us to
stage year round children and
teen shows versus the three or
four we do each year now.
The Liberty Event Center
will remain open through May
31 after which renovations will
begin.
It will undergo a retrofit to
add a box office, concessions,
dressing rooms and a theatrical
hall, JaceSon Barrus said.
Plaza will reopen at its new
location late this or early next
year, Barrus said.
