MOBY LAUNCHES NEW ALBUM

Moby, the electronic artist known for his dark musical undertones and staunch advocacy of
animal rights, has announced a new album in the form of an environmental manifesto.

Entitled These Systems Are Failing, the album to be released on Oct 14 will be debut of his new
act called Moby and the Void Pacific Choir.

Moby releases an initial two tracks, which have echoes of the techno sound that made him
famous in the 1990s, but carry a forceful wall of guitar and bleak minor-key arrangements.

A video for the title track starts with Moby dragging a microphone stand through a parking lot
into nature, before a rapid-paced tour of consumer culture. The video races through a supermarket
before showing piles of chicks being dumped to their deaths in an egg factory.

Moby will release the album before Circle V, a new vegan music and food festival on October 23
in Los Angeles.

SECTION C

(25 MARKS)

Read the passage below and answer the following questions.

1 My best friend used to date a guy who would question her whenever she 1
thanked a wait staff member for bringing food to their table. She told him just
because its their job, its doesnt mean she couldnt be grateful for their service
and offer them a smile and a thank you.

2 Needless to say, the relationship didnt last. Its quite impossible to sustain 5
a meaningful bond between two people who couldnt see to eye on something as
basic as common courtesy. But the guy is just one example of the lack of
manners in our society these days. How often have we held the door for a
thankless stranger or kept the elevator open for people who avoided eye
contact-much less say thank you-and think its our job to hold it for them. 10

3 I consider saying thank you the cornerstone of good manners. The action-
be it to the mailman delivering your internet shopping order, the waiter sending
your teh tarik, or the cashier handing your change- should be as seamless as
breathing. It is your building block of your interaction with the world. Thats why
its the first thing parents teach their toddlers when they are old enough to
15
interact with others. If a child is given something, often, his or her parents would
prompt him or her to say thank you. Its a very simple act, but one that
demonstrates gratitude and good manners.

4 There is a policeman manning the main road in KL Sentral because cars

dont stop even when the light is red and pedestrians sometimes dont press the
20
roadside button. One afternoon I crossed the road and thanked him and the
smile that he gave was the testament that most pedestrians dont even notice
that he stops the car for them.

5 Call me conventional or old-fashioned, but I feel that we have lost so much

good manners that it becomes heart warming to see a courteous act that was
25
considered normal, even expected, a few decades ago. I come from a household
where you bend down when you walk in front of those older than you.

6 I am sure many of us have experienced being knocked by children in malls

who were running around with their friends or siblings. Sure, kids will be kids, but
30
to have tiny strangers knock you without any apology speaks more about
manners than childhood habits. In some cases, these were done in full view of
their parents, who seem to think nothing of their childrens behaviour.

7 Two weeks ago, I held the elevator at Le Meridian for a couple who entered
with their baby in a stroller in tow. Both of them said thank you, which goes to
show that something as simple and as important as good manners starts from 35

[12]
the home and are best taught by examples.

A Poison Tree

William Blake

I was angry with my friend:

I told my wrath, my wrath did end.

I was angry with my foe:

I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears,

Night and morning with my tears;

And I sunned it with smiles,

And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night,

Till it bore an apple bright;

And my foe beheld it shine,

And he knew that it was mine,

And into my garden stole

When the night had veiled the pole:

In the morning glad I see

My foe outstretched beneath the tree.

Paper 1
The Best Fund Raising Event

By: Jaganath Kay

Secretary of the Humanitarian Club

Last weekend was our first fund raising event that our school had organized for the
building of a new open hall. As the secretary of the Humanitarian Club, it is my responsibility
to give all the information pertaining this successful event.

Firstly, this event was carried out last week on the 1st of October 2016. We began at
exactly 8.00am and the whole programme ended at 5.00 pm.

The venue was at the school car park lot when teachers vacate their parking lots to
accommodate the booths set up on that day. They had to park their cars at the school field
for one day. The participants were mainly parents, students and teachers with a few
outsiders from the neighborhood who had heard of the event based on the banner hung
outside the school gate. Many attended this fund raising event simply to contribute.

There were three main objectives for this event and they were all met. Firstly the
event was meant to support the building of the open hall financially. We managed to collect
a sum of RM5000 profit from the sale of our items. Secondly was to instill consideration and
kindness. Again this was achieved when the club members showed consideration and
kindness to each other during the whole day despite their depleting energy level. Finally the
objective of encouraging team spirit was also achieved by all members.

We had a host of activities planned including the sale of Muffin and cakes. We had
appointed a bakery to bake a variety of muffins and cakes and sell it at a higher cost. People
bought them a lot for the fund raising event. Next, there were custom made scrapbooks and
plenty of stationery sold too. The students all bought them as they were quite cheap and
they wanted to help too. Many used their savings to buy all items. Of course the badges and
fridge magnets were sold like hot cakes too as they were colourful and trendy. The students
and parents bought them too.

We had carried out two other activities too in the event. First activity was the trip to the
ghost house when the tickets were sold at RM10 each. That was a huge success. Next was a
magic show by our very own students who performed some fantastic shows to the
audience. The tickets were sold at RM10 each too.

[22]
Overall, the event was a huge success with the collection exceeding our target of RM4000.
Of course we were overjoyed with the RM 5000 collected. Hope, we could do such events in
the future too.

Section B - Continuous Writing

5) In seventh grade gym class, the two self-proclaimed slowest and fattest kids in the
class found themselves trailing all of the other students on the track. Coach was yelling at
us, Gentlemen, you have to run the mile in seven minutes or you will have to run it again,
recalls Greenfield. Ben then responded, Coach, if I didnt run it in seven minutes the first
time, then Im sure not going to run it in seven minutes the second time.

Ever since that first day when they met and shared their humiliation in gym class,
Cohen and Greenfield have been best friends. Although they moved apart during their
college years, they always seemed to find their way back into each others lives. Over the
years, the developed a friendship built on trust and shared values, which would go on to
become the very foundation upon which Ben & Jerrys was built.

We thought, why dont we get together and do something fun and be our own
bosses, recalls Greenfield, and since we liked to eat we should do something with food.
From sharing the cost of the $5 Penn State course on ice cream-making that they took for
which they received 100s on all their tests to deciding to go into business together, Cohen
and Greenfield realized early on the advantages of working together. Not only did they have
a trusting relationship and share many of the same operating principles, but they also knew
how to have a lot of fun with each other.

The story of Ben & Jerry highlights the success that can come from working with a
partner that you respect or as part of a team instead of going it alone. When Greenfield was
making the ice cream, Cohen was out selling the product. When Greenfield was picketing
the Pillsbury headquarters by himself, Cohen was printing Whats the Doughboy Afraid
Of? t-shirts. Together, the two knew each others strengths and weaknesses, and made the
most of each other in putting together their business.

In order to build a successful business relationship, there needs to first be a building of

trust. Cohen and Greenfield already had that, and that was one of their key secrets to
success. Cohen and Greenfield also shared the same agenda and a similar commitment to
creating a responsible business. This not only facilitated the development of a common
vision, but also served to act as a double driving force towards the achievement of their
goals twice the energy, twice the fire, and twice the hard work.

Working with friends can no doubt have its drawbacks. A business relationship can put
tremendous strain on a friendship, even sometimes bringing the best of friends into court

[23]
battles over business assets. However, throughout all the challenges of starting up their
business from trying to sell ice cream in the cold of winter to being nearly shut down by
Pillsbury Cohen and Greenfield managed to stick together, stay focused on their common
goals, and work in tandem to achieve the success that they did as the saying goes two heads
are better than one.

to sit down and pen a few pages. Its easier to communicate with the phone which is just a
touch-button away. We can get bonded while still on the move. However, in the 19 th
century, personal letters were far from trivial interpersonal notes exchanged between
people. They portrayed life very clearly. It has detailed portraits, events around them. We
are given a glimpse of what life and living was all about in the past. The letters provided
insight into sensitive and penetrating minds. The poetic quality of their letters shouldnt be
missed. They were used as a tool to convey their thoughts, and the life they experienced.
We are filled with awe at this wonderful quality.

Novel Question - Sample Answer

Introduction - The novel of my choice is Dear Mr. Kilmer written by Anne Schraff. One of
the best lessons learnt in this novel is not to be prejudiced in any circumstances.

Reason 1 - Firstly, it is Richard who is not prejudiced in any circumstances. When his
classmate, Hannahs familys tavern was vandalised by some hardcore anti-German people
from his town, he showed sympathy towards Hannah and her family. The next day, his
teacher, Mrs. Hansem, being broad-minded and open about this issue has asked the class
to sign a sympathy card. Nobody cares to sign the card other than Richard. He wants to sign
his name on the sympathy card that his English teacher Mrs. Hansen has bought. However
his friends refuse to sign the card as they call Hannah a Hun and thinks she is pro German,
as America is now at war with Germany. He wants to do it for humanity reason and not
because he isnt loyal to his country. I like this lesson the best because it teaches us not to
be prejudice to everyone as we are living in a multi racial country.

Reason 2- Furthermore, It disgusts Richard that people are picking on Hannahs family
simply because they sing German songs and speak their own language. How would he feel if
his family were picked on? he asked himself. Despite the fact that he is tired of being
different from everybody else as he likes to write poems. Richard knows that he has to sign
the card. He is a friend indeed. He has already made his decision.

Reason 3 -He signs his name on the sympathy card. By signing the card, it shows
Richard is very matured for his age. After all he is only a teenager. He has done the act of an
adult and shows compassion to another fellow human being when his teacher asks him to
sign the card. Only a matured and caring person will show compassion when something
terrible happens. This again shows and proves Richard as being prejudiced in any
circumstances and that is why this is one of the best lessons learnt in this story.

Next, Richard having a close relationship with Hannah even though they are of a
different race. Hannah supports Richards passion in writing poetry and always gives her

ideas to Richard to improve his work. It shows that friendship is more important in life than
being prejudiced. He is a good listener. Often, he listens to Hannahs stories and her worries
of her brother Otto who has enlisted in the army. He consoles her and allows her to cry. He
is a good friend to Hannah because good friends spend a long time talking and listening to
each other and never being prejudiced in any circumstances. Likewise, Hannah is also not
prejudiced to Richard and she treats him as her good friend

Conclusion- As a conclusion the reasons stated above have made me choose the lesson
of not to be prejudiced in any circumstances as the best lesson.
