August 1999 TEJB6080 Cat 365B L Excavator 5

New Technology

Introduction The Cat 365B L features new technology in the cab that is operator
friendly and increases controllability. Unlike other Cat 300B
family excavators, the 365B L features the Vital Information
Display System (VIDS), with a new monitor that has four gauges,
message center and an 18-button keypad. The new monitor is
designed for man and machine interface with language display
capability. The 365B L monitor also displays information that past
300B Series monitors were unable to display.

The joysticks have also been improved. Instead of pilot hydraulic-

type joysticks, the 365B L has electronic joysticks that send
electrical signals to the pump-valve controller. Electronic controls
enable operator perceptions to be changed, optimize simultaneous
operation and provide interactive control of the pump and
controller valve.

The 365B L has three controllers for the engine, pumps, hydraulic
system and monitor.
Monitor controller transmits information displayed by the
VIDS monitor; gives input to the VIDS monitor.
Pump-valve controller provides interactive control of the
pumps and control valve. Four of the five 365B L hydraulic
pumps are directly controlled by the pump-valve controller.
ADEM II (Advanced Diesel Engine Module) controls the
engine and is designed to provide the most economical fuel
output from the Cat 3196 engine.

All three controllers use Cat Data Link, a Caterpillar developed

communication method for exchanging information within the
machine. Cat Data Link directly interfaces with the Electronic
Technician (ET), a service tool that accesses all controllers.

The message center uses a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) dot matrix
Message center
display that is easy to read in sunlight. The panel can display
both language and graphics. The 365B L can be programmed to
display nine working languages. One additional language can be
changed using ET. The Electronic Technician changes the internal
languages to match customer preferences.

Keypad
The keypad has 18 keys, each with its own icon. The operator uses
the keypad to give instructions to the three controllers. Instructions
given through the keypad include:

New Technology

In the 365B L, both the joysticks and travel pedals generate electrical Electronic Joysticks
signals instead of conventional pilot pressures. The control perception and Travel Pedals
(operating force and stroke) of the joysticks and travel pedals is the
same as other Cat 300B family pilot hydraulic joysticks and travel
pedals. However, the movement of the joysticks and travel pedals
is converted into an electrical signal that is sent to the pump-valve
controller which can modify the signals before sending them on
to the pumps and main control valve, ensuring smooth control and
good simultaneous operation. The electronic joysticks enable the
operator to select his or her own preferred controllability feel.

Electronic joysticks

New technology changes are also found in the 365B L hydraulic Hydraulic System
system. While the 365B L uses the same three pump system with
independent swing (like the 375), the pump and control valve are
directed by the controller. Also, the 365B L offers a Heavy Lift
Mode as standard. The pump-valve controller prevents the main
spool of the Proportional Priority Pressure Compensation (PPPC)
valve from fully shifting while reducing engine speed and main
pump hydraulic flow, enabling the machine to be moved slowly
for safe handling of heavy objects.

Other hydraulic system changes include:

A constant flow function for auxiliary circuits maintains
fixed flow volume to attachments. Four flow rates are available
and may be changed depending on attachment requirements.
A cooling loop for hammer applications. Return oil from
the hammer bypasses the oil cooler, reducing backpressure.
To avoid overheating, the swing pump discharges excess oil,
which is routed through the cooler.

New Technology

Hydrac The 365B L hydraulic system features the new, Caterpillar

exclusive Hydrac. Developed by Caterpillar engineers, the Hydrac
provides state-of-the-art electronic control, resulting in high
hydraulic efficiency and improved controllability.

Hydrac valve

Engine The 365B L is the first Cat excavator to use the 3196 ATAAC
engine. The Cat 3196 is a high performance engine utilizing the
Advanced Diesel Engine Module (ADEM II) fuel system.
ADEM II offers optimal fuel injection control for high efficiency
and machine operation in a wide range of ambient temperatures.

Productivity and Performance

One of the key buying criteria for customers is machine

productivity, especially for excavators in the 65 mt (143,300 lb)
size class. The 365B L weight and front linkage, along with three
controllers for the engine and hydraulic system, are critical for
machine performance.

The 365B L is designed to maximize loading effectiveness

when working with 36-40 mt (40-45 ton) off-highway trucks.
The 365B L may be configured with two booms and five sticks
to accommodate various application requirements for reach and
bucket capacity. Working range and bucket capacity are important
factors to consider when working with trucks. Remember, there is
a trade off between working range and bucket capacity. The long
365B L undercarriage and heavy counterweight enable the machine
to be configured with larger buckets without sacrificing stability.

The 365B L working ranges are interchangeable with the 245B,

enabling customers with 245B and 245D machines to easily
convert to the 365B L. The 365B L stick and bucket forces equal,
or are greater than, the 245B bucket forces. Lift over the front at
ground level has increased 11 percent, and lift over the side
improved by 15 percent for the 365B L.

Fuel Unit Injector

The mechanically actuated unit injector system combines high
pressure pumping, an electronic actuator and an injector spray
nozzle into a single unit.
Electronic unit injector (EUI) with modular design and fewer
components for greater serviceability and flexibility.

Fuel unit injector Computerized electronic control of the exact time and duration
of fuel injection for precise metering and timing of fuel.
The unit injector pressures are in excess of 175,800 kPa
(25,500 psi) for reduced fuel consumption and lower
particulate emissions.

Cooling System The 365B L has a plate-fin-type, five-row radiator that uses a
variable speed fan driven by a hydraulic motor. The fan provides
highly efficient suction for good cooling capacity and low sound
levels. The ambient temperature for the standard machine is 43C
(110F), including 0C (32F) starting capability. Attachments are
available extending the ambient working temperature range:
High Ambient Cooling Package with a 52C (125F) capability.
Two cold weather starting kits assisting with cold weather
starting conditions.

16 TEJB6080 Cat 365B L Excavator August 1999

Productivity and Performance

The 356B L hydraulic system includes a three pump system with Hydraulic System
an independent swing circuit. The overall system has two pumps
for implements and travel, a swing pump, a pump to operate the
cooling fan and a pilot pump. The pump-valve controller controls
all pumps, with the exception of the pilot pump. The hydraulic
system also includes a mount and pump drive for an auxiliary
hydraulic pump, emergency engine halt function and bucket
lowering after engine stop function. Caterpillar also offers the
following attachments for the 365B L hydraulic system: boom and
stick lowering control devices; suction line shutoff valve;
biodegradable oil package and third pedal for straight travel.
Hydraulic tank capacity is 310 liters (82 U.S. Gallons).

Like the Cat 375 and 5080, the 365B L hydraulic circuit utilizes
a load-sensing system that uses a Proportional Priority Pressure
Compensation (PPPC) valve system, but the main spools of the
control valve are controlled electrically by a Hydrac. The pump-
valve controller emits the electrical signal that controls the Hydrac.
The pump-valve controller directly controls the pump and valve
interactively for excellent productivity. The 365B L hydraulic
system with independent swing provides the following:

Good swing acceleration. The 365B L has excellent swing

acceleration, the swing circuit has engine output priority
and two swing motors.
Good simultaneous swing and other operations. The swing
circuit is independent of the implement circuit low
interference when swing and another operation are used
at the same time.
High-efficiency hydraulic pumps. Load-sensing systems
that use PPPC valves ensure that pump output pressure is high
enough to meet load pressure.
The normal output pressure of the main pump for implements is
32 000 kPa (4640 psi). During Heavy Lift Mode and during travel
the pressure rises to 35 000 kPa (5080 psi) for strong lifting
capacity and high maneuverability.

The hydraulic pumps, control valve and hydraulic tank are located
close together. Shorter tubes and lines between components help
reduce frictional loss and decrease pressure drops.

PPPC Valve System (Proportional Priority Pressure Compensation)

The most important feature of the PPPC valve system is that the
amount of control valve spool movement and pump output flow
can be controlled simultaneously. Actuator speed matches the
operators desired speed. The PPPC valve system gives the 365B L
hydraulic system the following advantages:
Extremely smooth shift from lever neutral to lifting.
Pump flow is not wasted.
Excellent simultaneous operation.

The Hydrac was developed by Caterpillar engineers for Caterpillar Hydrac

hydraulic systems. The 365B L is the first excavator to utilize
the Hydrac.

The Hydrac converts the electrical signal from the pump-valve

controller to the hydraulic signal that drives the main spool.
One Hydrac is located at each end of each main spool. Each Hydrac
is comprised of a solenoid, pilot hydraulic pressure control section
and a feedback spring.

The Hydrac does not merely convert an electrical signal into a

hydraulic signal. The Hydrac compares the value of the electrical
signal from the pump-valve controller and the amount of
movement of the main spool based on the counter-thrust of the Hydrac valve
feedback spring. The Hydrac automatically corrects the movement
of the main spool to meet the value of the electrical signal from the
pump-valve controller, if necessary. The Hydracs functions give
the 365B L the following advantages:
Spool control is reliable and precise.
The effect of flow forces is minimized.

August 1999 TEJB6080 Cat 365B L Excavator 19

Productivity and Performance

Electronic Joysticks The 365B L utilizes electronic control levers and travel pedals,
instead of the pilot hydraulic-type used in mid-size Cat 300B
excavators. Straight travel pedals, attachment pedals and
attachment switches on the grip are also electrically operated
(available as attachments).

An electric signal from the joysticks and travel pedals is sent to the
pump-valve controller. This signal is used as a control signal to the
control valve and pumps. The joysticks are designed so that the
electrical signal does not change with slight joystick operation near
the neutral position, avoiding inadvertent movement and keeping
the lever from being overly sensitive. Using electronic joysticks
and pedals has the following advantages:
Electronic joystick
Power management control is possible. Hydraulic flow
corresponds with control valve movements.
Operating perception can be changed. The operator can
effectively customize perception or feel for a specific work
situation or to suit his preference. Operator perception is a
combination of response and gain. Response is the time elapsed
from the moment the control lever is operated until the cylinder
attains desired speed. Gain is the relationship between the amount
of lever stroke and the change in cylinder speed. For the 365B L,
there are three types of response and seven settings for gain,
totalling 21 control perception choices.

Gain and Response Settings

Gain
Small Standard Large
(1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7)

(1) Slow
Response (2) Normal mode 1 mode 2

(3) Fast mode 3

Control lever patterns can be changed using software,

eliminating the need for the manual lever quick changer valve
(an attachment on mid-size hydraulic excavators). The control
pattern can be changed by altering the service mode settings
using ET.

20 TEJB6080 Cat 365B L Excavator August 1999

Productivity and Performance

Heavy Lift Mode is designed to improve 365B L lifting capacity. Heavy Lift Mode
The 365B L main pumps have a relief pressure of 32 000 kPa
(4640 psi). By operating the VIDS keypad, the relief pressure
can be increased to 35 000 kPa (5080 psi). Heavy Lift Mode
can increase lifting capacity by up to 15 percent. When Heavy
Lift Mode is ON, actuator speed is restricted to 50-70 percent,
improving lifting controllability.

The 365B L hydraulic system has six filters that improve reliability, Hydraulic Oil Filters
extend hydraulic component life, increase performance and lower
operating costs. Two types of filtration systems are also available
as attachments.

Capsule filters (3) are used on the main pumps and swing pump
return circuits. Capsule filters filter out impurities as small as
B10 = 1.4.
A pilot filter is installed at the pilot pump outlet, filtering out
impurities as small as B9 = 2.
Pump drain filters are on the main pumps and the swing pump
case drain.
Hydraulic oil capsule filter
Motor drain filters are on the case drains of the swing motor,
travel motor and fan motor.

Durability

Upperstructure Component Layout

The 365B L has the same component layout as other Cat B-Series
excavators for improved hydraulic efficiency and easy maintenance.
High temperature and pressure sources are located away from the
operator station. The pumps, control valve and hydraulic tank
are grouped together and the control valve is close to the hydraulic
cylinders and motors. By minimizing oil flow and distance
between components, hydraulic power loss is reduced.

Cover, Hood and Guarding

The upperstructure side panels are made of 2.0 mm (0.08 in) rolled
steel plate. Service doors are reinforced and rigid in both open and
closed positions. Sound reduction material is attached to the inside
of the service doors. The engine hood is bolted to the upperstructure
and a door in the cover can be opened for servicing and inspection.

The 365B L upperstructure is protected with a standard bottom

guard, which is included with the swivel guard. Bottom guards
are 6 mm (0.24 in) thick for the swivel guards; 5 mm (0.2 in) or
3 mm (0.12 in) on other guards. Heavy-duty guards are standard
in some markets.

The upperstructure surface and top of the storage box are covered
with anti-skid punched star plate. Durable punched star plate is
effective in all weather conditions. Larger hand rails and grips
assist in mounting and dismounting the machine.

Anti-skid punched star plate

Carbody and Undercarriage The 365B L has a variable gauge undercarriage. With this design,
the track roller frames are bolted to the carbody, enabling the
machine to be made narrower for easy transportability. The 365B L
carbody is a box section, modified X structure with vertical
plates that are angled towards the swing center, strengthening the
design of the carbody. The deep-section design of the carbody also
increases rigidity in the track roller frame structure.

Front Linkage Caterpillar offers two booms and five sticks for the 365B L:
Reach boom provides a maximum digging envelope
Mass boom provides maximum excavating power and
bucket capacity
Booms for the 365B L are made of high tensile steel with large
cross-sections and baffles for improved strength and reduced weight.

Like the booms, 365B L sticks are made of high tensile steel with
a box-section design and baffles for strength, reduced weight and
durability. A lighter weight stick enables the machine to be matched
with a larger capacity bucket for increased payload. All Cat sticks
have reinforced thick bottom plates to prevent damage from the
load when the bucket is curled. All sticks and booms are stress
relieved for increased life without added weight.

Operator Station

The 365B L cab dimensions are basically the same as the 375.
However, the cab is wider, longer and higher than medium size
Cat 300B excavator cabs. The 365B L cab offers operators excellent
visibility and comfort, along with superb controls. There are seven
different cab variations available to meet regional requirements.
(Refer to the NPIR, section 13.1.6 for more information.)
Cab construction features a roll-formed design that avoids stress
concentration cracks that were found in older sheet metal design
cabs. The 365B L cab uses six rubber mounts or silicone oil to
absorb vibrations and limit sound levels inside the cab.

Vandalism protection is available as an attachment. Vandalism

guards may be folded and stored on the battery cover. A Falling
Objects Guarding System (FOGS) may be required in some areas.
365B L cab This attachment is designed to meet legal requirements for FOGS.
It is not a Roll Over Protection Structure (ROPS).

Visibility to the work area is critical for the operator. The 365B L
has a laminated glass front windshield (available in three variations).
The wiper attaches to the right cab pillar and rests against the pillar
for better operator viewing to the work area. (An additional lower
windshield wiper is standard for NACD/COSA and CACo.) A sun
visor and rain protector are available as attachments for the front
windshield. The right side window is not obstructed by a cab pillar,
providing adequate lighting and good visibility to the work area.
The rear window can be released with a latch and may be used as
an alternate exit. The tempered glass upper window on the cab
Right side window door slides open for ventilation and communication with others on

Serviceability

The 365B L with VIDS is self-monitoring with auto-diagnostics.

VIDS enables the operator to continuously determine machine
conditions. If any abnormality occurs, it is immediately displayed
on the VIDS message center as a short, written message.

The Electronic Technician (ET) through the electric controller

services ADEM II, the monitor controller and pump-valve
controller. ET enables the service technician to communicate with
the 365B L via a personal computer, checking whether all the
controllers are operating within acceptable standards. ET also has
the ability to flash the 365B L, changing monitor controller and
pump-valve control programs (flash downloading).

Accessibility Anti-skid punched star plate material is used on the storage box,
the surface of upperstructure and on catwalks, minimizing slippage
by the service technician or operator. Punched star plate material is
effective in all weather conditions and may be removed for cleaning.
Catwalks provide access to the upperstructure and service doors.
The right side catwalk provides access to the pump compartment;
the left side catwalk access to the cab, air cleaner and radiator
compartments. Large handrails and grips assist the operator/service
technician when mounting or dismounting the machine.

Serviceability

Large service doors are located on both sides of the upperstructure

and may be locked in the fully opened position. The left rear service
door accesses the engine radiator and the oil cooler. Located
behind the forward left service door is the air cleaner compartment.
The batteries, reserve tank, fuel line water separator, a relay
box, condenser and window washer fill tank are located in this
compartment.

The right side service door accesses the hydraulic pumps,

hydraulic return filter and pilot filter and engine oil
filter. A lockable storage box and the fuel tank are located
Radiator compartment
on the right front of the upperstructure. The fuel tank has
an 800 liter (211 U.S. Gallon) capacity.

The engine may be serviced from the upperstructure or from

beneath the machine. A steel wall separates the engine and pump
compartments.

Serviceability

Hydraulic oil capsule filters are located on the outside of the

hydraulic tank and are accessed from the top of the machine.
The filter cartridge design helps prevent oil contamination when
the filter is changed. The entire filter cartridge is removed as a
unit, keeping the service technicians hands clean and prevents
contaminants from draining back into the hydraulic tank. If the oil
filter restriction exceeds a specified pressure, warning information
will be displayed on the VIDS message center. The hydraulic
system and the engine oil system have SOS sampling valves
for fast and easy fluid sampling.
