CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

Film is one of the art forms that became a phenomenon in modern life. As

objects of art of this century, film have been developed to be a part of the

social life, which would have a significant effect on the human being as the

audience.

In this era, the development of film from both inside or outside the country

are mostly we found in Indonesia. The example of foreign films are Harry

Potter, The Twilight Saga, Robin Hood, and much more. The distributing of

film usually using English language. So many conversation and scenes that

use English Languange with fast pronounciation, of course it can interfere the

audience understanding. So thats why, the movie maker it self add some

subtitles to help this condition, its because the development of the film not

only in the country it self.

All the foreign films like from western, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic or

Malay even Upin & Ipin has any Subtitles. Subtitle is a translation text of a

film or video, which is usually located under the video when we played the

video. Subtitle is very important for us if we do not understand the language

spoken by the characters who appear in the film or video.

Therefore, the writer interest to observe and make paper entitled Subtitles

Influence Students Understanding of The Film in XII Grade SMA Plus Negeri

17 Palembang.

1.2 Problem Formulation

The problem formulation of the paper are as follow:

1. How is XII Grade students understanding in watching film which

have no subtitle?

2. How is XII Grade students understanding in watching film which

have subtitle?

1.3 Objective of Study

The objective of study are as follow:

1. To observe the XII Grade students understanding in watching film

which have no subtitle.

2. To observe the XII Grade students understanding in watching film

which have subtitle.

1.4 Significance of Study

1. For Writer

Based on the problem formulation above, this paper expected to

give some information about the influence of subtitle in a film.

2. For Reader

Based on the formulation above, this paper expected to be a good

reference about how important subtitle is to encourage students

undersatnding in watching film.

LITERATUR REVIEW

2.1 Subtitles
Subtitle is a translation text of a film or video, which is usually

located under the video when we played the video. Subtitle is very

important for us if we do not understand the language spoken by the

characters who appear in the film or video.

There are several kinds of subtitle:

1) Softsub subtitled is separate from the video. It means subtitled

files and video files located in different form. Sofsub have some

extensions, such as, ass, srt, etc.

How to display softsub is to put RAW softsub and video into a

single folder with the same name.

For example: sofsub for Naruto [NSIF] Naruto Shippuuden 224.ass,

the video [NSIF] Naruto Shippuuden 224.mkv.

Some players, automatically displays the current softsub video

played. However, there are some players who have to first load the

softsub.

Advantages : It has small sized because located apart from

video, it can be edited easily, and if you already have the video with

no subtitles, it can be downloaded the softsub only.

Disadvantages : easily pirated, took a few steps to play, if the video

and the softsub doesnt match it will be broke the files.

 2) Hardsub Subtitle is a subtitle that has already blend with the film.

So the text on the hardsub not a text anymore, but has become a picture.

To edit the text on the hardsub it takes long strides. And how to play the

video with hardsub is by playing a video like usual.

Advantages : not easily hacked, when video played, it

will run smoothly.

Disadvantages : has large size, if we have video that has no

subtitle we must re-download the video that has been subtitled.

3) Embedded Subtitle is softsub that has already attached with the

video.

Advatages : can be edited easily and easy to play.

Disadvantages : easily hacked and has large size.

2.2 The Definition of Influence

Based on Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia influence is the power

that exist and arises from something (people, things) that makes up the

character believes or ones deeds. From the definition above it can be

stated as the effect of power toward something that can make or change

something else.

Influence is a situation that contain with reciprocal relationship, or

a causal relationship between the influences and influenced. This two

things are linked and searched wether there has connection or not. On the

other hand influence is a form of power that could trigger something, make

 something change. So if something was called influence of the change then

there will be consequences of that.

2.3 Understanding

Based on Oxford dictionaries the definition of understanding as a

noun are:

-) the ability to understand something or comprehension

-) the power of abstract thought, intellect or an individuals

perception or judgement of a situation

-) sympathetic awareness or tolerance

-) an informal or unspoken agreement or arrangement

The definition of understanding as adjective are:

-) sympathetically aware of other peoples feelings; tolerant and

forgiving

-) having insight or good judgement.

2.4 Film

Film is one of the art forms that became a phenomenon in modern

being as the audience. Based on Oxford Dictionary the definition of film

as noun is a story or event recorded by a camera as a set of moving images

and shown in a cinema or on television.

There are 4 categories of film narrative films, non-narrative films,

animated films and experimental films.

1) Narrative Films

The genre / type of this film is characterized by the presence of a

clear story. This genre can relate the past events to the imaginary

future. It also tell a fantasy or something that is not real (fiction).

The genre of narrative films divided into several types there are

drama, horror, history, war, science-fiction, action (action), musicals,

and a cowboy (Western). This category classification type of film can

be combined: for example, action comedy, historical drama, etc.

2) Non-Narrative Films

There are two types of Non-Narrative films, documentaries and

factual films. Factual films generally only show facts or records of

events, such as news (newsreel) and documentation. The

documentary, other than the fact, it also contains subjectivity

manufacturer. Subjectivity is defined as an attitude or opinion on the

event. The specificity of the documentary is a position that combines

two things: science and art. In other words, the documentary is

"artistically arranged facts", reveals a variety of human conditions and

problems.

3) Animated Films

 Animated film is a film that use images (paintings) and other

inanimate objects (tables, chairs, dolls) that can be turned on with the

animation techniques

4) Experimental Films

Experimental film is a film made without the use of rules in the

usual filmmaking. The purpose of experimental film making usually

for experimenting and looking for new ways of expression through

film.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Operational Definition of the Term

1) Subtitles

Subtitle is a translation text of a film or video, which is usually

located under the video when we played the video.

2) Influence

Based on Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia influence is the power

that exist and arises from something (people, things) that makes up the

character believes or ones deeds.

3) Understanding

Based on Oxford dictionaries the definition of understanding as a

noun are, the ability to understand something or comprehension and the

power of abstract thought, intellect or an individuals perception or

judgement of a situation

4) Film

Based on Oxford Dictionary the definition of film as noun is a

story or event recorded by a camera as a set of moving images and

shown in a cinema or on television.

3.2 Research Method

In this study, the writer will use a descriptive qualitative method.

According to Kurnia (2007:190) a descriptive qualitative research

 describes the definitions and understanding of actions which happened to

person or group, and comes from social and humanity issues.

3.2 Time and Place

The writer do the research by giving questionnaire on February,

2013 at SMA Plus Negeri 17 Palembang.

3.4.1 Data Collection Techniques

In this research the method of collecting data that used is

observation. Observation method is the method used by the writer to

answer the problem that is related to the ecology point of view. Because

from this method, writer will do the field observation directly and see what

really happens, so the data will be more accurate.

3.5 Data Analysis Techniques

Data obtained through analyzed descriptively supported by various

literature sources. Then, from the information received, the writer colleted

the data and finally she analyze the data related to the problems in order to

reach the solution which has been discussed.
