The Only Blog Post Idea List Youll Ever Need

Filed Under: Writing Content 36 Comments

This guest post is by Stephen Pepper of Youth Workin It.

There are so many articles out there on how you can come up with new blog post ideas, but
do any of the suggestions actually work?
We started our youth work blog in September 2011 and have posted six days a week ever
since, so weve had to come up with over 200 posts related to youth work so far. Needless to
say, its been tricky coming up with this many ideas.
Ive read all kinds of different suggestions on how to overcome bloggers block, but each
persons experience is different. Here are 20 techniques weve used to help counter
bloggers block.
1. Embarrassing stories: Think back to moments of your life when you were really
embarrassed. Use that situation to craft a post relating to your nichetheres a good
chance itll entertain readers (as did our post on how being asked to rate the first time
with your wife out of 10 on a BBC gameshow watched by millions can relate to youth
work).
2. Choose subjects for each day of the week: This has probably been my single most
helpful way of deciding what to write. Each day from Monday to Saturday has its own
categoryMondays are for posts on youth work activities, Tuesdays are youth work
Q&A, Wednesdays are program administration, and so on. This means our focus can be
more defined each day, rather than having to come up with a random topic every time we
write. You can do this even if you only blog once a weekthe first week of the month
could always be based on one subject, the second week on another, and so on.
3. Use special days as inspiration: Use special days and public holidays as post idea
prompts. For example, we have a Spotlight on Youth series where we focus on a certain
young person based on certain public holidays. For example, we wrote about the former
child soldier Ishmael Beah on Veterans Day. On National Pirate Day, write your post in
Pirate language. National Pancake Day? Work your post around that.
4. Cell posts: Can you divide your posts into two, like a cell divides? You might start writing
a post and realize that youre starting to talk about two different things. For example, we
recently started wrote a series about parents involvement in your youth work. When
working on a post about unsupportive parents, we realized there were actually two types
of unsupportive parentsone whos unsupportive of their child, and one whos
unsupportive of the work youre doing with their child. These are completely different
issues, so we were able to get two days worth of posts out of one original idea.
5. Change of scenery: Changing your location can have a big impact on your
creativity. Wed started getting stale with our idea creation recently, so we went and sat
on Virginia Beach for an hour to come up with future topics. After an hour, we had over
100 new blog posts ideas.
6. Write for sub-niches: Youth work has a number of specialized areasurban, rural,
faith-based, LGBT, gangs, foster care, mental health, sexual health, young offenders,
etc. Theres a good chance that whatever niche youre in has many similar sub-niches.
Make a list and use it to inspire further ideas.
7. Use Google Analytics: Take a look at the keyword searches that are bringing people to
your site, as this will give you a great idea of what information people are looking for. You
may think that the fact that theyve arrived at your site means youve already written
about what theyre searching for, but thats not always the case. We did a series on
preparing young people for job interviews (including what they should wear), but weve
had many people arrive at that post having searched for what youth workers should wear
to job interviews. Its a completely different topic, but we can now create a number of
posts about youth worker interviews.
8. Likes: What do you love in your niche? Why are you blogging about it? What was your
favorite moment relating to your niche? These questions can all be turned into posts for
your blog.
9. Dislikes: Similarly, what do you hate about your niche? What practices wind you up? Let
these frustrations become passionate posts.
10. Consider opposites: By looking at an issue from opposite directions, you can get two
new blog post ideas. For example, we recently gave advice on how to come up
with good youth group names, but also wrote a subsequent post on how to avoid a lame
youth group name.
11. Be inspired by social media: On Twitter, are there any hashtags specific to your niche?
Keep an eye on these as theyll give you a good idea of questions people may want
answered. On Facebook, are people leaving comments on your page that you could
address in a blog post?
12. Solicit guest posts: Try to build up a bank of guest post submissions from other
bloggers. These can then be used when youre feeling dry of ideas.
13. Search research: Use Googles keyword tool to discover what people are looking for, as
opposed to what you think theyre looking for. This is also where your sub-niches can
also come into play. For us, instead of searching for youth work, researching a sub-
niche like youth retreat uncovered a number of keyword searches like youth retreat
themes, youth retreat ideas, youth retreat games, etc.
14. Compilations of your own posts: Introduce your readers to some of your most popular
posts by making a compilation list. If youve covered a number of sub-niches, you could
even have a series of compilations based on each of those sub-niches.
15. Compilations of other bloggers posts: If you want to become an authority in your
niche, youll need to read other blogs relating to the same niche. Show them some love
by creating a compilation of the best posts youve read recently and linking to them.
16. Take training and share it: Have you had specific training relating to your niche? My
wife (the better half of Youth Workin It) has an MA in youth work and community
development. Shes therefore able to share her learning from her Masters to youth
workers who dont have that qualification.
17. Consider current affairs: Are there any popular news stories not directly related to your
niche that you could write about by giving your niches take? For example, after watching
the Stop Kony video, we provided a youth work session plan idea based on the Stop
Kony campaign, as well as an opinion piece on whether youth groups should support the
campaign.
18. Use other peoples ideas: Dont plagiarize other peoples blog posts. Yet theres
nothing wrong with taking their idea and improving on it, or offering a different opinion.
19. Explain jargon: Are there phrases in your niche that wouldnt make sense to an
outsideror even an insider? Write a series of posts explaining words or phrases that
would be jargon for most of the population.
20. Run competitions: Are you selling ebooks or any other resources? Hold a competition
where readers get the opportunity to win a copy of one of your books. This is not only an
easy post idea, but also provides another opportunity to promote your resources.
There are 20 items in this list. What tips can you add to build on these? Wed love to hear
them in the comments!

his wife run Youth Workin It, which includes a youth work blog and have started producing
their own youth work resources to help youth workers worldwide.

67 Ideas for Blog Topics

February 8, 2012

By Jill Whalen

You're likely sick of hearing about the importance of having great blog post
content. But you know you need it in order to have something to promote via social
media. And you know that great blog posts can bring in lots of long-tail search
engine visitors.

What you may have trouble with is what to write

about in your blog.

With that in mind, I've brainstormed 67 blog

ideas to get your creative juices flowing. What
you write about in your blog will of course
depend on your type of blog, your industry,
whether you're selling products or services,
whether you have a local walk-in establishment, and a number of other factors.

When you browse through this list, remember that most blogs should have a wide
variety of blog post types rather than always sticking with the same ones. While it's
fine to announce a new product or service on your blog, if that's all you do, it could
get pretty boring.

I've put the types of information into a few different categories to make it easier for
you to scan for the type that might interest you. So without further ado, I give you
67 ideas for blog topics that could interest your target audience:

Upcoming events:

1. Classes, seminars, conferences, webinars (and why you should attend).

2. Special events (wine tastings, 5-course dinners, open houses, etc.)
3. Introduction to new products or services.
4. Important company announcements (as long as this isn't all you do).
5. Free stuff you're giving away.

competitors).

Thanks Jill. I'm always struggling with ideas so this list will help immensely!
Jill Whalen said:
Thanks, Sue! I'm likely going to be referring back to this list myself. A lot!

Josiah Gallo said:

Great list Jill! Maybe it should be its own item, or might go along with 57, but
stories of people who have used your services/products in the form of a story or
case study can make a great post for SEO and for the value is offers readers.

jonathan said:
Think I'll pin that list up. I like no 68: " What did I miss?" (10 big opportunities
people missed out on. Rejected the Beatles? What did you miss?) :-)
I've recently been experimenting with another source of ideas: ultimate-
research-assistant. It does look able to stimulate a new idea to write about or a
new slant.

Great list! This can also be used for reference when coming up with guest post
ideas...

Great blog ideas, thank you! I'm always struggling to come up with good ideas.

Great list Jill - I'm forever trying to instill in customers that variety works, but
that from their own perspective they need to have some order - here is a good
way of adding variety for the blog visitors, while having some order from the
writer's perspective.

Love it Jill.

Looks like you have at least a chapter or two that can go into your hopefully
upcoming book. :)

Thanks Jill, I'm just starting to write a Blog linked to my newly revised website
(launching early next week, I hope) and have quite a few ideas on what to write
about, whether or not it will be of interest to others I'll have to wait and see.
What I'm not sure about is how people find what you're blogging about, if they
Google a subject then does it just pick up on the Blog heading or the content?

Jill Whalen said:

Sarah, you have to promote your content through social media. See my other
posts on that subject.

This is a helpful list. We deal with blogging lawyers and they often struggle to
come up with ideas for blog posts. They have a lot of ideas when they first start
off but often find it hard to maintain and give up. Events, how-to, and expertise
are particularly relevant to lawyers.

Debbi Cohen said:

Thank you Jill. We have over 200 posts currently on our site and are trying to
expand our range of content. This list will be a great resource.

My favorite is # 25: Do it yourself: For example, how to create a Title tag, how

In that exact order. :)

Very helpful, Jill.

I'm bookmarking this one! Blog writing can be a bit same old same old, but I'm
going to try and do a couple of these for variation this month...

I'm just about to start my content marketing strategy for my business and really

The more you blog, the harder it can be to come up with fresh ideas to write about. Two of the most
important parts of a blog are compelling content and frequent updates. Take a look at the following

remember to try to apply each of these ideas appropriately to your blog topic.

1. Lists
