Direct Instruction Lesson Plan

I. Describe the Class:

3rd Grade class of 16, 1 ELL, 1 LD, & 1 gifted

II. Subject/Skill:

Language Arts: Identifying prefixes and suffixes in words.

III. Objective(s):

The students will identify prefixes and suffixes. They will evaluate word parts and

determine the meaning of vocabulary words. They will do this via worksheet and they

will do this with 85% accuracy.

IV. Procedures:

1. Go over a quick Brain Pop video with the students so that they understand what

prefixes, roots, and suffixes are.

2. After the video go over the definitions of prefix, roots, and suffixes.

3. Go to the board and write prefix + root + suffix. Write prefix in RED, write

root in BLACK, and write suffix in GREEN. I would then review with the

students that prefixes are found at the beginning of a word, that roots are in the

center of a word, and that suffixes are at the end of a word.

4. Have students pick 8 random words from my box of words and have them try to

guess the meaning of the words by identifying the prefix, root, and suffix. They

will then write their words on blank index cards.

5. After this, Ill have each student present their words to the class and have their

fellow classmates determine whether or not they are right by locating the words in

their dictionaries and making sure that the student is correct.

V. Materials:

Blank index cards (16)

Red, black, and green markers

List of vocabulary words in a cup

VI. Grouping Structure:

This activity will be located in our classroom. I will have each student pick a word

and using their previous knowledge they will identify which part is the prefix and

which is the suffix. Then

VII. Modifications:

For my ELL students I will be giving them their words personally instead of picking a

random word from my box. This way it is guaranteed that they will know the word.

These words will be vocabulary words that they are familiar with.

For my LD students I will read one of them the words and definitions so that they can

hear what is on the paper (since they have dyslexia). This will make it easier for them

so that they dont get confused by the other letters on the page.

And for my 2nd LD student who has ADHD I will allow this student to work on their

assignment on a bouncy ball so that they can focus on their words better. For my

gifted student I will give them an additional 2 words to identify so that they have

more to do and will be able to assist others if needed.

VIII. Assessment:

I will then grade the students of participation, accuracy, and oral presentation. I will

have them all sit back down and have them take a quiz where they have to identify 3
words and what they mean by identifying their prefix, root, and suffix. After this I

will pass out a homework sheet and dismiss them for lunch.
