FACULTY OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNICATION 3

FACULTY OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY
AND COMMUNICATION

When the University of Luxembourg was established in 2003, several existing higher education
institutions were integrated into the Universitys three faculties. The Faculty of Science, Tech-
nology, and Communication arises from a merger of: 1. the Institut Suprieur de Technologie,
founded in 1916, which offered, since 1997, a four-year degree in applied engineering sciences
and computer sciences; and 2. the Dpartement des Sciences of the Centre Universitaire du
Luxembourg (biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics), which offered first-year (and in some
cases, second-year) courses in medicine, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics.

Today, the FSTC is split over two of the campuses: Kirchberg: Engineering, Computer Science,
Geophysics, Mathematics; and Limpertsberg: Life Sciences, Physics and Materials Science).
Some colleagues are already based in Belval (Laboratory for Photovoltaics; and the House
of Biomedicine). A new Campus is being built at the moment in Esch-Belval and already has
become the new home for parts of the University.

Studies are organised in Bachelor and Master courses. The FSTC offers two professional
Bachelor programmes (Bachelor in Engineering; Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Sciences/
Bachelor en Informatique) and two academic Bachelor programmes (Bachelor in Sciences and
Engineering; Bachelor in Life Sciences), as well as ten Masters: Mathematics (academic);
Information and Computer Sciences (academic); Integrated Systems Biology (academic);
Sustainable Development: Energy and Environment (professional); Master in Condensed Matter
Physics (academic); Master in Information Systems Security Management (professional);
European Master of Small Animal Veterinary Medicine (professional); Master of Science in Civil
Engineering - Megastructure Engineering with Sustainable Resources (academic); Master of
Science in Engineering - Sustainable Product Creation (academic); Master Professionnel en
Sciences de lIngnieur - Efficacit nergtique et conomique (professional).
The Faculty also offers continuing education programmes in general medicine for general
practitioners (formation spcifique en mdecine gnrale), as well as a Certificate of Small
Animal Veterinary Practice (CSAVP) a Certificate on the Principles of Biobanking and a
Certificate "Smart ICT for business innovation". Furthermore, the Faculty hosts a comparatively
high number of doctoral students.

Research at the FSTC is structured into five research units: Computer Science and Com-
munication; Engineering Science; Mathematics; Physics & Materials Science; Life Sciences.
Researchers engage in national and international collaborations, and the Faculty attracts EU as
well as corporate research funding (e.g. the ArcelorMittal Chair in Facade Engineering).

Two Interdisciplinary Centres (ICs) underpin some of the FSTCs research areas: the IC for
Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), and the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine
(LCSB). These ICs are independent from an administrative perspective, but are closely linked
thematically to the Faculty, and interaction with the Facultys research units and staff is
mutually beneficial.

The Facultys staff and students benefit from international collaborations on the European
as well as on the global level. Professors and researchers are from more than 20 different
countries, and teaching is offered in English, French and German.

Dissemination and outreach activities include public lecture series, expert seminars and
conferences (also in cooperation with NGOs and other stakeholders), as well as workshops for
students and children, school visits and participation at information days, fairs and exhibitions.

3. Student Intranet
The University is running an intranet platform for all UL students. You can connect via
http://intrastudent.uni.lux/, using you student ID and password, but please be aware that you
only have access when you are inside a University network.
The Intranet is providing information about
- the cultural and sports events offered at the University;
- job offers (student jobs but also employment opportunities for graduates);
- preparing your mobility semester;
- the IT Helpdesk at your disposal
You can also top up your budget for printing via the student intranet. Have a look!

4. The FSTC is on Facebook!

To access the page, please visit the FSTC website http://wwwen.uni.lu/fstc and click the
Facebook button on that page.
It would be great if you became a friend and helped us to maintain this lively and informal
window to the world for our Faculty!

5. Representation of students in the University bodies

Every student of the FSTC has the right to be elected, and the right to vote for student
representatives into university bodies. There is one student representative in the Board of
Governors, elections to this position are organised by the central administration. Two students
per Faculty sit in the University Council, and one FSTC student will represent his fellow students
in the FSTCs Faculty Council. If there is a vacancy in one of these committees, the Dean will
organise elections among FSTC students.

6. Your opinion counts! Evaluate your courses and contribute to our quality initiative!
After each semester, we will ask you to evaluate the courses you have taken, by completing a
questionnaire. We encourage you to participate in these evaluations, as it will help us to learn
which things work well, and what needs to be improved. Evaluations will be announced by the
Dean and the Course directors. These surveys are of course anonymous.
Furthermore, the Dean's office will continue to invite interested students to provide general
input and feedback to our quality enhancement initiative for teaching and learning. This will
include focus group discussions and other feedback channels.

7. Your opinion counts - contd.: The Student Feedback and Discussion Forum on Moodle
Every student can actively engage in feedback and discussion at our Faculty. The Feedback
Forum on Moodle is a joint initiative by the FSTC Dean's office and the Students' Committee
(CEST). You just need to logon to Moodle and participate at an existing discussion topic or open
up a new one. You will receive feedback via the CEST, who will also discuss possible solutions to
any problem mentioned with representatives from the Dean's office.

8. Going abroad: Studentships, Erasmus +, Global exchange programme!
a. Studentships
The University is offering studentships, sponsored by partner institutions, to the best students.
In the last years students were offered opportunities to go to India (Coimbatore) and Japan
(Tokyo). Information on how to register will be circulated via Moodle; course directors will take
the decision on the distribution of these stipends. The International Office will announce other
opportunities as they become available; communication will be made via Moodle and via email.
b. Erasmus +
What is Erasmus+?
Erasmus + is the EU's new programme for boosting skills and employability through education,
training, youth and sport.
Between 2014-2020 the programme will provide opportunities for over 4 million Europeans to
study, train, gain work experience, and volunteer abroad.
What does it involve?
In the field of education and training, the Erasmus initiative combines possibilities for students
and staff to go abroad and study/work at another University. UL students can, for example,
spend their obligatory mobility semester in the framework of Erasmus+, or go abroad for an
internship.

For more information, please click these links:

http://ec.europa.eu/programmes/erasmus-plus/index_en.htm
http://ec.europa.eu/education/opportunities/index_en.htm
and get in touch with the "SEVE Mobility" colleagues (seve.mobility@uni.lu).
c. Global exchange programme
The University of Luxembourg has signed a series of agreements with partner universities
beyond the borders of Europe. The exchange opportunities offered to students within the
framework of these agreements are what we call the "Global exchange programme".
The common point between all of these agreements is that students do not pay tuition fees to
the host university.
- As the available spots are limited, students are selected on the basis of their application
file and a personal interview.
- Information sessions for students take place every year in October.
- After these sessions, all information as well as the application forms are sent to the
students by e-mail.
- The application deadline is generally beginning of November.

Partner universities
For the moment, the University of Luxembourg has signed student exchange agreements
with eight universities in the United States, three Chinese institutions as well as universities
in Japan, Thailand, India, Uruguay, Russia and Canada. Moreover, the University also has a
partnership with the CREPUQ network (Conference of Rectors and Principals of Qubec
Universities), which allows students to apply for a mobility term within any university in Qubec
that is a member of the network.
For more information, contact the SEVE Mobility team (seve.mobility@uni.lu) or the UL's
international office (stephanie.schott@uni.lu), and go to this link:
