Lesson aims:

To discuss and express opinions about different pictures;


To develop students vocabulary related to pictures and art;
To develop students listening skills by filling in a questionnaire;
To develop students ability to write short stories;
To enhance students interest in reading stories.

Procedure:
Warming up activity:

The teacher introduces the students to the topic they are going to discuss
by trying to give a meaning to the name of the unit and lesson that they are
about to begin. The students may try to look at the pictures in the textbook in
order to figure out what they are going to talk about.

Timing: 5 minutes

Activity 1:

The students are invited to talk about preferences in general and then
they also try to give a meaning to the unit, to explain its title. The teacher helps
them by mentioning some quotations about pictures and words. The students
comment upon these quotations and the teacher supports their ideas and helps
them with unknown words where necessary.
Then, they are asked to express their opinions about the pictures in
the textbook and choose one of them and explain why this was their choice.

Activity 2:

The students are going to listen to a CD conversation, an extract from a


play called BY DESIGN where two people(Annabelle and Keith) are talking
about a friend called George; they are explained the possible unknown words
before listening to the CD; after that, they are given some questionnaires to
complete while listening for specific information. The teacher explains their
tasks clearly.

Timing: 15 minutes

Activity 3:

The students are going to work in groups in order to write a story


containing five words that are written on some cards which they have to
choose; they also have to choose a leader who will read their story. The teacher
explains their task clearly and suggests them some opening lines/ ending lines
in order to ease their work.

Activity 4 (feedback):

The students are assessed and helped with unknown words where
necessary. Then they read aloud their paragraphs as a conclusion. The rest of
the teams choose the best story to be published in their high-school newspaper.

Homework and evaluation:

The teacher grades the students and gives them as homework to


summarize one the novels they liked most in no more than 20- 25 lines.
