IhaveceratinquerrieswhichariseoutoftheambiquitiesthatIhaveinmomentredistribution&
momentreleasesinRCstructures.
Firstly,themomentredistributionisdoneafterthecompleteanalysisisdone.AsIbelieveitisjust
readjustmentofmomentsincertainpartsofthebeamwithafaiththatthereadjustedmomentscan
betakencareofinotherlocationsinthebeams.KindlycorrectmeifIamwrong.

Ontheotherhand,themomentreleasesoptionsavailableinpopularbuildinganalysissoftwareslike
STAAD&ETABSplaywiththefixityatthejoints,indirectlymodifyingtherotationcapacitiesatthe
jointsandtherebymodifyingthemomentsandshearsinthebeams.Kindlynotethatdoingthis,we
modifytheforcesinproratabasisinallthepossiblestaticloadcaseslikeDeadLoad,LiveLoads,
SeismicLoads,etc.

ButthepopularbeliefisthattheredistributioncanbedoneonlyforDeadLoads&LiveLoads(Vertical
Loads)andnotforLateralloads.AlsoinIS13920:1993,Cl6.2.4,momentredistributionispermitted
onlyforVerticalloadsandnotforlateralloads.ButinIS456:2000,Cl37.1.1usesterms"ALL
APPROPRIATECOMBINATIONSOFLOADS".

Iwanttoclarifyfollowingqurries,

Iamnotsureicangivereplytoyourqueries.Butfromwhatiknow,Momentredistributionisthe
concreteequivalentof"Plasticanalysis"insteeldesign.Whenconcretecracksatsupport,thebeam
andcolumn/walljointisallowedsmallrotation(plastichingeformation)andsteelreinforcement
keepsitinitsplaceandthiscausesredistributionofmoments.Therefore"DUCTILEDETAILING"as
perIS13920hastobeadoptedatsupports,andonlythenredistributioncantakeplacesafely

(detailinghastobeadopted,amountofreinforcementcanchange).Secondly,sincelateralloads
(seismic)aresuddenandtheirbehaviorisdifficulttopredetermine,andthustheredistributioncan
notbecompletelyreliedupon.
Inmodeling,youcandowhateveryouwantwiththereleasesbutmakesurethatthemembersand
reinforcementisdetailedasperyourassumptions.
